Except for the teams (who are both hated rivals to a Cub fan like me), that game had everything that makes me love baseball. Great pitching, timely hitting, an amazing catch, pitching out of jams, 9th inning heroics, 9th inning goats, and so much more. It's just too bad the Cardinals couldn't complete the heartbreaking loss in the bottom of the 9th. How does Beltran watch strike three go by? Don't you protect the plate in that situation, at all costs? Sheesh. Go Tigers!

I saw a great post on a great sports blog today (deadspin.com):
"Funny...when I imagined that scenario as a little boy, I never struck out looking."

I cannot believe he struck out looking, but it happens. That was a nasty curve though.

I can't believe the Braves let Wainwright go. Betemit, either.

Any comments on that crap that was clearly visible on Kenny Rogers' hand? He pitched great after he washed it off, but I still wish LaRussa had asked the ump to inspect it. Oh well, now to St. Louis for game 3...

Gotta be pine tar.
I can understand an old pitcher doctoring the ball. I can understand his manager playing dumb about it. I can understand the umps missing the obvious.
But what I can't understand is how baseball's most anal crybaby/witch-hunter, Tony LaRussa, doesn't demand a search.
Do you know how many times he's accused Maddux, Zambrano, and Prior of doctoring baseballs? Every Cubs/Cards game has 13 "check the baseball" moments. Minimum.

No, I don't know how many times he's accused them of doctoring, but I'll take your word for it that it's 13 times per game. So in the last 3 seasons alone, that would be 741 times! Maybe he didn't say anything because of his friendship with Leyland? Either that or he was afraid Rogers would get thrown out and go into a roid rage, killing every cameraman in the stadium. I didn't like it, but he does have 2,297 more MLB managing victories than I do, so I'll let it slide. I just wanna move on to game 3 at St. Louis and forget about last night.

I'm not trying to bash the Cards (this time, anyway). I'm just saying LaRussa is one of the most militant managers about the rule book. It's odd that Mr. Suspicious wouldn't go after this.
But the quote of the day goes to Dusty Baker: "If the other team doesn't care, it isn't cheating."
Truly an ethicist for our times.

And he pitched better without it. Weird.
Who is leading in the contest so far?
