The board death watch ain't what it used to be. This one got by. A case could be made that he was the most famous person on the planet. Even more famous than Cassios Clay.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. RIP I found out about Ali's death yesterday morning, literally hours before I took a bunch of kids to see the new Ninja Turtles movie as a summer treat (which was better than the godawful previous film, but still a lacking movie...though the kids enjoyed it). At one point Michelangelo makes a "Float like a butterfly" reference, and I thought to myself "Wow, that's unfortunate." That afternoon I watched the MST episode Horrors of Spider Island, which also had a reference to Ali. I felt like I couldn't get away from it. Then I remembered I was helping babysit even more kids the night before and we watched cars, and recalled the line "Float like a Cadillac, sting like a Beamer." This is a testament to how much impact he had on the world.

He was an incredible athlete and an incredible social figure. Like Torgo said, his personality seemed ubiquitous even after he had stepped back from the limelight. My only gripe is everyone saying he was the greatest boxer of all time. He was awesome, no question, and he may be the greatest heavyweight of all time (though Joe Louis and maybe Rocky Marciano have some claim to that, as well). Sugar Ray Robinson has also been cited as the greatest boxer of all time and is honestly probably the most deserving of that title. This is not a dig at Ali. I'm a boxing fan and have my opinions. Something tells me he'd argue the point with me himself with good humor. He seemed like that kind of guy. Either way, it's a terrible loss, and one can only wonder how things may be different in the world had Parkinson's Disease not taken him away from the world so early. Rest well, sir.

I used to enjoy watching his fights and his ability to self promote on ABC. Both my maternal grandparents suffered Parkinson's. I watched them suffer for years then die from it so I felt sympathy for his situation.
