The bots are always making fun of Mike saying he's not good with woman and calling him a loser and so on.
However, not being all that familiar with the Joel era episodes I was wondering if Joel usually received similar treatment. I know in the few episodes I've seen with Joel the bots don't seem nearly as harsh. In Soultaker they seem to down right love the guy, though that might just be in retrospect.
So basically I was wondering if they give Mike so much poopie because he's not their creator or do they give him poopie cause they've always acted like that even with Joel?

Joel was their papa, the creator. Mike was just some doofus who got thrown in the mix.
I don't mean that in a personal way, I love Mike. But his character is basically an aimless guy who worked at a cheese factory and temp jobs and wasn't very good at fixing things (His attempt at building a Bot results in disaster).
So Mikes one of the guys, he takes it, but has also dished it out on a few occasions.
Joel would get a few knocks, they made fun of him during Gamera I beleive (Look familiar Joel, he he) and they'd give some attitude during the skits (Joel hanging from the rafters and the bots don't help). But for the most part, he's the creative one, the succesful one (even Mike's a little jealous in Soultaker) the Father who'd do most of the admonishing ("Don't be so dark" he chastises during one of the Circus shorts).

Acutally, they DID make fun of Joel sometimes. Just watch The Amazing Colossal Man, and wait for the skit about when they analyze that fiance.

Then again, there's always the "Okay Joel, we're your friends....not!"
"Cambot, remind me: next time, no free will."
I think that's the Bowlin' Bots sketch...

Their relationship is sorta a father/teenager thing. They like him for creating him and all, but that didn't stop them from having an additude.
Mike was just some guy, of course they're going to be harsher to the newbie.

In 207 - Wild Rebels, when parodying the movie in the third host segment, the bots beat up Joel. I guess that wouldn't count as them being mean to him, but still...

I would like to confirm that I have also noticed the bots being meaner to Mike than to Joel. They make fun of Mike not getting any chicks, not going on any dates and just generally being goofy. And though they are making jokes and being funny, they also mean it a little more than any joshing they did with Joel. Joel was their dad, so at the end of the day they had respect for him, (though they might not have always shown it) Mike was more of a subtitute teacher, or older brother, or distant relative you talk to only on holidays. They treated him Rodney Dangerfield style: he got no repsect!

With Joel and the 'bots, the abuse was the _other_ way around! They maybe insulted him a few times, but that's NOTHING compared to what he did to them. Giving them pain just to show them what it's like to be human, or punishing them (then again, they DID just let him float outside the ship for an entire week and ignored his banging on the hull... :P), taking them apart, reassembling them or reprogramming them just for fun...he could be _nasty_ to those poor little bots. And that's not counting the occasional arm-ripping-off that he did to Crow, _in_ the theater...
Fatherly relationship yes, but _tough_ love. Definitely. He seems to believe in spare the idio-probe, spoil the 'bot...
Of course, he could get away with all of this since, unlike Mike, he DOES know how to rebuild them. Mike wouldn't dare, even though sometimes he might consider it. So Mike has to be a bit nicer to them out of necessity. But I also think he's genuinely more mild-mannered/easy-going. He doesn't seem to have as much of a temper as Joel, or it doesn't go off as easily. You never see Mike ripping Crow's arm off for just one little pun...
It's one of the things about Joel that _isn't_ perfect and saintly, but I still like the character anyway. The fact that he seems all nice and sweet and calm all the time and actually has quite a dark streak makes him...well, more interesting. There's another layer there. In some host segments (especially in Seasons 0 and 1) you realise that there's really not _that_ much seperating him from the Mads, after all...
Eeanyway. Yes, I know I'm analysing this too closely. But bite me, it's fun! ...I mean the analysing, not me being bitten. :P

I remember the opening segment of Manos where Joel reprograms the bots to think that everything he says is right and wonderful. Then after commercial sign, he takes off the programming and the bots are pretty pissed off
Crow:Don't touch me, odn't ever touch me Servo:(sniffs the air), Geez Joel, something crawl into your jumpsuit and die? Joel: Theres the bots i know and love
And remember in Fugitive Alien when Joel made the robots be barnyard animals

I definitely agree with Cleolanta! I find it amusing that most people describe the Joel years as so innocent and care-free, but fail to remember that Joel could get pretty violent with the 'bots. I'm not complaining, I thought it was great, but I don't recall Mike ever threatening to throw Tom against the wall, like Joel did, and Mike was also less likely to tear off a 'bot part and toss it away when either of the pair annoyed him. I think Tom and Crow teased Joel less because their creator had a quiet but deadly mean streak, whereas Mike would just take it. Poor, dumb Mike.

There was also that host segment in Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster where the bots were making fun of Joel behind his back for making those inaccurate models of buildings on earth.

That reminds me, they also were mean to him in Mitchell. Yeah, Joel let them destroy the toothpick model that he made, but they would've destroyed it regardless.

Well, Mike did toss Servo in the theater during #618: "High School Big Shot", but he did warn him before he did it.

You never see Mike ripping Crow's arm off for just one little pun... Didn't Mike try to saw off Crow's net once? I seem to remember an outtake of it on the Poopie tape. Mike tossed Servo in the theater in The Atomic Brain as well, and didn't really give him a warning to it. Unless you count, "You're a heavy guy."

Yeah, but Mike is still mild compared to what Joel did to those guys...
For another odd little example, although not really _violent_ in this case...I saw "The Slime People" for the first time recently, and during Servo's long speech about "Oh, then _I_ have an idea for a show. This guy is a castaway on an island, and he makes little mechanical pals out of pieces of the boat..." etc. For absolutely no reason whatsoever, Joel takes OFF Servo's head, on purpose, then puts it back on, then removes one of his _hands_ and screws it back in, all during the same speech. Nothing to do with anything at all. It was very weird. :P
It's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for...
