Anyone know where I can get quick, easy, basic information on Joel? Now for your enjoyment, here's some information about Joel: Between 1983 and 1984, Joel was one of the hottest properties in New York and Los Angeles. He made several appearances on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. His stand up act was also taped for HBO and Showtime comedy specials. Here's a list of TV appearances Joel made during this period: 2/15/83 Late Night with David Letterman (1st appearance) Summer 1983 HBO's 8th Annual Young Comedians Special (hosted by John Candy) Summer 1983 Showtime comedy special (Not positive, but it could have been a special called "Magic Magic" that never aired) 11/12/83 Saturday Night Live (Host - Teri Garr) (Joel's first appearance is famous for a bomb scare Joel accidentally caused when he left a prop from his act, a fake time bomb, in his hotel room) 12/10/83 Saturday Night Live (Host - Flip Wilson) (2nd appearance) 2/1/84 Letterman (2nd appearance) 2/18/84 Saturday Night Live (Host - Jamie Lee Curtis) (3rd appearance) 4/19/84 Letterman (3rd appearance) 5/12/84 Saturday Night Live (Hosts - Betty Thomas and Ed Koch) (last appearance) 6/11/84 Letterman (4th appearance) 9/18/84 Letterman (last appearance) After being disillusioned with the Hollywood system, Joel decided to retire from comedy and move back to Minnesota. Joel still went to comedy clubs, but only to watch other comedians. He met Jerry Seinfeld after he performed at The Comedy Gallery in November 1985. That meeting lead to the two comedians working together when Joel co-wrote and appeared in Jerry's breakthrough HBO special, "Jerry Seinfeld: Stand-Up Confidential", in the spring of 1986. It aired in 1987. In the summer of 1987, Joel started missing the stage, so he started to perform periodically at the Ha-Ha Club. For several weeks in the spring of 1988, Joel did a brief tour to polish his act. He also opened for Jerry Seinfeld once while they were collaborating on another HBO special. Joel finally made his official comeback into the stand-up world at the end of April at The Comedy Gallery. In July, a crew from Showtime taped Joel and other comedians for episodes of "Showtime Comedy Club Network". In August, Jim Mallon needed to fill a 2-hour Sunday evening time slot on KTMA TV-23 and thought this could be an opportunity to collaborate with Joel. They met over lunch at a deli in St. Anthony’s Place. Two weeks later Joel returned with some drawings and a sketchy outline for a show starring a man and his robot sidekicks that watched bad movies while orbiting in space. And now you know...the rest of the story. I'm always fascinated when fans say that they think certain characters are "funnier" than other characters on the show. I think first impressions have a big effect on some people. Fans who started watching the series in the early 1990's on Comedy Central tend to prefer Joel, but fans who started watching the show more recently tend to prefer Mike instead of "that Joe guy on the Rhino DVDs". I suppose the answer is to try to figure out what kinds of things you like about the episodes and try to keep that in mind when you are trying to find new ones. Personally, I think all of the characters are great. Share and Enjoy, _Ford_Prefect_

JOEL IS BIZARRE? I, too, fed on the milk of Mike and Pearl and such on the Sci Fi channel for my initial twelve-ish viewings, but I have recently found the world of Joel (such says I haven't been i fan for that long, obviously) and I must admit, I prefer Joel to Mike. No idea why. Happened last weekend. But I hold nothing against you though I may disagree with Joel being bizarre. Which gives me a chance to ask: Anyone know where I can get quick, easy, basic information on Joel? Let me clarify. It's not that Joel is bizarre, per se, but that I find him weirder than Mike. And he always looks like he's stoned. I still find him enjoyable, but he's not my favorite host. I simply like the humor of Mike better than Joel. Both are hilarious, but Mike is my fave.

I have always enjoyed Pearl, Bobo, and Brain Guy. They were Dr F and TV's Frank but I thought that they had their moments.
I would agree that it got better once the found the castle, but I would even make an arguement the the ancient Rome episodes were quite good as well.

My thoughts:
I liked the serial, ongoing nature of MST season 8. You never knew where the SOL would land next, and yet they managed to have a resonable continuity in the host segments.
However... once they arrived as Castle Forrester, the ongoing storylines became less interesting. Especially the "Accredited Mad Scientist" plot... that stunk.

I think that's the opposite of most opinions. I like the season 8 host segs but they take a lot on criticism. But I do like the Castle Forrester's better.

Well, it's not the first time I've been in the minority. But, personally, I loved the Wormhole sketches, the OBservers Planet and Roman times.. all those storylines were great!

I believe it was a stipulation that Sci Fi wanted. They thought a running story would be good for ratings or something. But they loosened up after eight so I guess the Brains didn't want to continue with the storyline. But I like it also. Pearl and the Boy's arn’t well received by everyone. That's why I started this thread.

Actually, from what I understand, that was one of the things that SciFi wanted the show to have, in order for it to be shown. The plot thing, and science fiction movies only.

What did I just say? Ator, don't make me slap you around. Bring it on! No, seriously, you said that they did it "for ratings or something", when, in fact, it was a prerequisite for SciFi picking it up.

Honestly i liked them. Now they Obviously are no Frank and forester but they did what they where supposed to do and did it well. Some episodes Pearl is just Unbareable (Pearl Tv anyone?) but overall she isnt that bad. BOBO and Brain guy really help her out.
On the Mike Vs. Joel. Personally i like Mike. Mike was more real and more relaxed. I found Joel to be almost depresing some times and he seemed like he had no energy and was just lifeless. Commentary wise i feel they both held thier own.

I'm a new guy around these parts. But, let me say this: I absolutely love MST3K. I mean, that's the understatement of the year. It's my favorite show of all time.
Joel? One of the funniest performers I've ever seen. Mike? Love him. Trace? Hilarious. Kevin? Top notch. Frank? Great. Bill? Very funny.
HOWEVER......................I have to say, I really, really, really, really, really, really dislike the character that is....Pearl Forrester. I feel like it's the only time MST has ever truly made an error. It was a flawless show...perfect chemistry and everyone on the show was so likable. I love Joel and I love Mike. I think the show was absolutely hilarious both before and after Mike took over as host. Village of the Giants and Santa Claus are as funny as it gets...classic episodes.
But, Pearl, Pearl, Pearl. It pains me to say it because I love the show so much, but she seriously detracted from the show. I honestly never once laughed when she was on screen. She mugged for the camera, had zero charm or likability and really just wasn't a very engaging character. She wasn't fun to watch.
Brain Guy and Bobo were pretty good, I thought. I mean, I really like Kevin and Bill. They had good chemistry and they were funny. They didn't approach the comedic genius of the Frank and Dr. F. combo, but they were funny.
But, Pearl.....ugh. My only complaint about MST from Season 2 on.
Still, it's the greatest show in the history of television.
I just really hope that Rhino releases more CC episodes. We want Frank and Dr. F!!!!!!!!
