Ugh. Every school I went to growing up showed that freakin' Hobbit movie at least once. I hated it!

There was a cartoon? Is the world ending?

I haven't seen the cartoon version. I'd imagine that it would be pretty stinky.

I never saw it but when I was having a disscussion about a dream season 11 with some friends the LOTR animated movie came up a lot.

It wasn't THAT bad... Personally, I think it would be cool to see Mike and the 'bots take on Jackson's version.

How bad IS this cartoon? I mean, what made it so bad?

I simply don't think that they'd have enough material with the live-action LOTR movies. The Brains have said that they're all big fans of the movies. If the make fun of it, it would be in the low-keyed style like in Sword and the Dragon (once again, in my opinion). However we wont see too much criticism in their riffs. The cartoon LOTR is where its at. Sorry, I know I've said it before, but, it is required again. Why should they do Return of the King? If you wanna see what them riffing ROTK would be like, watch Lost Continent. Same great rock climbing, less movie, and Hugh Beaumont. Can't beat that, Servo

There are 3 separate cartoon versions of Tolkien's work. Rankin-Bass did 2, a version of the Hobbit, and a version of Return of the King. Ralph Bakshi did a version of Fellowship & Two Towers (as one animated film).
The Bakshi film wasn't awful, but it wasn't very good either. At the very least, he pioneered a form of animating over cells of live actors.
The Rankin-Bass movies, however....wow. What makes them so bad? Well, for starters, Casey Kasem does the voice of Pippin. So any Merry & Pippin scenes feel like you're watching Shaggy & Scooby. During the big battle scenes, to save on animation hassles, they simply do an overhead shot with little dots moving around, simulating warfare. Gollum looks like a frog- sometimes purple, sometimes green, but definitely a frog.
And then there are the songs. Oh, the songs. Orc classics like "Where There's A Whip, There's A Way" and "Down Down Goblin Town". The latter is set to a disco beat. But the worst are the troubador ballads like "Frodo of the Nine Fingers" and "The Greatest Adventure" which are sung by a warble-voiced Peter, Paul, & Mary reject. I still get the shakes when I think about it.

How bad IS this cartoon? I mean, what made it so bad? I think I saw the Bakshi film and it was just ponderous and boring. But I never read the books so that may be why.

The Bakshi film by the standards of the PJ version is repetitive, and far too ambitious (from "Fellowship" to halfway through "Towers" in about 2 hours).
However, at the time it was released there had been nothing like it, and the film is worthy of respect. The rotoscoped live action looked awful, but some of the animation was nice - my mental image of the Shire, Moria, and Lothlorien were influenced by this filme.
Bakshi was totally wrong to direct, and the film has an incomplete feel to it. In any case, the Brains have said several times that MSTing doesn't work very well with animation.

I saw the cartoon version of the hobbit and the first Lord Of the Rings. Long ago, I can hardly remember them. as far as art goes the Lord Of the Rings was pretty good, i think i was confused as far as the story went. The Hobbit almost made me cry, why my school insisted that we should watch it was beyond me. Heck the Lion Witch and the Wardrobe movie was better than that one. But i think it's already been not so subtally made fun of, did you ever see EDWARD THE LESS? There was a link to it at the SciFi site, it was fairly funny, too bad they only made one season of it. Left me at a cliffhanger... all well the best part was the Black Busriders.
