That's really the point I was trying to make. It can be hard to define what strikes one as funny. I don't think it's always as cut and dried as MightyJack has said. Many opinions change after subsequent viewing. If we all viewed the riffing as good or bad and not related to the content of the movie then we should form an absolute opinion fairly quick. But many opinions vary after more viewing, Why is that? I think because what you find funny depends partly on your state of mind. An episode can seem funnier if you watch it with other people than if you watch it by yourself. Not necessarily but sometimes. And if you really hate the movie it can effect the way your brain perceives humor. Seems nothing but scientific to me. The biggest thing that ruins episodes for me is hype. Manos, Parts, Touch of Satan, Final Sacrifice...they were all kinda pooped out because everyone talks so much about them. I'm just so anti-popular. I'm weird like that. In the end, though, all that matters is if it makes you laugh or not.

I believe I covered this way back in my MST and Age thread. Silly kids.

I forgot to mention, the popular-thing fades away after the first viewing. I'll get past my immaturity and watch it for what it really is. In the end, though, all the eps I mentioned are B-rated eps.

I seem to cause fits amongst you by saying I don't like Night of the Bloodbeast. I just think the movie drags, the riffs are sparse, and it's just all around bad. Not one of my favs. And, I also tend to like Alien From L.A. and the rest of you hate it. I just like the Rush riff. It's funny!

I never said it was cut and dried. There are a lot of elements that can influence an opinion.
But, there is a bottom line and that is that I watch these things to laugh. And to worry about whether a show is popular or a movie is ickey and I don't like it... if that distracts fom the bottom line, then yeah. I think you guys are missing out.
BTW, Touch of Satan isn't hugely popluar. It's largly looked at as good ep. But I love it, it makes me laugh.

I think my mood can play a part in it. The time of day (strange as that may sound, I laugh more when I watch them late at night. Mid day seems to be the worst time for me? Why, I dunno).
But there are shows that transend that. Santa Claus (and I'm not teasing phantom now) but I just watched that this week because I was down and needed a pick me up, and that one makes me laugh so hard, every time I watch it.
But if the movie itself was such a big factor with me, then for example the "Hercules/My Cheese Steak" flicks would all have the same grade since they are all pracically the same movie.
But there are a couple I love, one I don't and the others I'm in the middle. And itall comes down to the fact that I find the riffing is funnier on one r the other.
An ep can also improve because I notice riffs I didn't before. Indestructable Man for example. On my first viewing all I remembered where all the dumb snag/wizzing jokes. Recently I tuned into the more clever side of the riffing.

Well,I've learned that (internet) MSTies are generally nice, atleast here they are. I've gone to forums for my 2 other favorite shows, Simpsons and Family Guy. The Simpsons fans on the internet look WAY too far into simple lines and jokes, looking for deep spiritual and religious meaning when they should jsut be laughing. And Family Guy internet fans were just ass-holes. Long live the MSTies! Yeah. I went to a Jhonen vasquez board, and they were kinda bitchy.

I'm the only fan who loves Wild World of Batwoman but hates Mitchell. Mitchell wasn't that good for me, either.

I never said it was cut and dried. The reason I clumsily misquoted you on that was back when I was stating that the one's reaction to the movie had an influence on one's opinion of the ep you countered with something like the riffing is either good or it isn't. I haven't looked for the post so I'm loosely paraphrasing but there was something like that said.

Yeah, I'd stand by that to a degree. Let me offer a few examples.
Secret Agent Super Dragon: Good ep, I've always enjoyed it (not A level, but solid). Last time I watched it there were 2 times where I laughed big- but I don't remember laughing at those bits before (Servo's line about Fritz Hollings & Joel's silly riff about guys who make W's)
Why did those strike me the last time I saw it? They're not bad riffs, so why didn't I notice them before? There's an example where a show's improved because I've noticed something new.
Laserblast: "Are you ready for some football!" Many fans love those. But they never have made me laugh. Not in the 5 or 6 times I've watched this show. This supports the "black and white" example stated above (a riff is good or bad, makes you laugh or it doesn't) Laserblast has no nuance to me. It's the same the first time I saw it as it was the 6th.
Now, Manos: Bad movie, I don't enjoy watching the movie in the least. But when the Master waves his stick in Torgo's face and Crow says...
"cUt it OuT yoU feM!"
I'm gonna laugh, I can't help it. So what if the episode's popular, so what if the movies bad. Joel and the Bots made me laugh and thats the bottom line I'm talking about.
I will agree that there are movies that I would rather watch than others. "Sword and the Dragon" is one I might even watch unmisted. And I DON'T enjoy Mitchell as a movie. It's not an episode I pop in and go "Yipee!" about. But I like the comments the guys make.
I'm trying to be clear in my ideas and understand what the rest of you are saying. But I have a hard time with it. To me that would be like watching Manos and going "Yeah, that riff was great. But the movie stinks, so I don't like this episode" Can anyone see why this sounds backwards to me?

I'm sure they are brilliant, but I can't think about them because the movie is sucking me into it's black hole of evil!

See, I can understand that. If you say it didn't make you laugh, okay then. People have different senses of humor. There's something in "Herc & the Moonmen" that makes TS69 laugh his butt off, but they don't hit my funnybone. Likewise, maybe TS69 just doesn't find the blonde jokes in Blood Beast as hysterical as I do (I'm doubled over laughng and he's only got a sly smile type of thing). That's fine, humor is subjective. It's the "Movie sucks, so I hate the episode" I can't understand. Even if the riffs make you laugh you don't like the episode? That's where I get confused. I see what phantom is saying about being receptive. Perhaps part (not all) of the reason I love Jack Frost is that I am enoying the weirdness of the movie. I'm in a good mood right out of the gate. But that's only a small part because Mitchell (the movie) never puts me in a good mood

I'm a longtime fan and have always known others who liked MST but not quite as much as me. Being on this board is my main encounter with other big time fans. The thing that has surprised me the most is the extreme opinions on the best and worst episodes. My guess is if you got a bunch of, let's say Seinfeld fans together they would have more agreement on the all time favorite shows. With MST it's all over the map. Some of my least favorite shows have turned out to be very popular with others. I think this says a lot for the diversity of the fanbase. Obviously we all have something in common to appreciate it so much but we interpret the episodes so differently. My point? Just that I think it's great! If we all agreed on the same shows the discussion would be far less lively. I'm thinking more on the line with Sampo on this one. (yeah, I just said that.) I've seen episodes for the first time and didn't like it till I became more familiar with it. As I'm sure all of you do, it takes me about 4-6 views of an ep. to really find all the hilariousness (something like aquired taste) where a lot of the riff gold is just behind a joke you just heard and weren't paying attention when they said it. But my favorites had always changed, cause I'd start to get done with one ep. and start to find another, more obscure ep. familiar. All that changing favs. ended though, after I watched Time Chasers like 10 times last year when Starz, Showtime, and The Movie Channel, showed it un- mistied. And I just kinda fell in love with dumb little movie! It was shown in the mornings only, for the kids, but since I'm a kid at heart, well...and those Connecticut Green Mountains look beautiful. I'm gonna move there, maybe. ok not maybe, but it does look nice, no? Oh and one more point. "You're The Best" from Karate Kid is f***ing badass! man that was cathardic, thanks phantom.

I need to get these Santa eps on my next order so I can add to the debate of whether it sucks or not. They seem to be popular.
