Now that Shout has a deal with Paramount, it could change the likeliness of getting the Paramount titles on a future volume or singles. It is now possible, especially since Olives licensing for the MST3K'd Paramount titles expired, unless they were renewed but things might be looking better for MST3K Paramount titles

Amazing that is finally happening. Criterion announced they were releasing a batch of Godzilla films back in the 90's during the heyday of Laserdiscs, and Toho apparently pulled the rug out from under them at the very last moment.

Not sure I understand how Criterion gaining the rights to all of the Showa G films gets anyone any closer to MST3K releases of Sea Monster and Megalon. Those were available from others on DVD before and it didn't help MST3K. As far as Toho is concerned, MST pirated their property and that's something Toho isn't going to easily budge ground on.

It likely won't affect anything. Criterion has the home video distribution, but the rights to the Godzilla name and the rights to the films themselves belong to Toho. Any deal Criterion would spark with Shout would have to go through them.

here's hoping that somebody at Criterion goes rogue and just straight up sticks the MST3K versions on the blu-rays as super-secret easter eggs

Um...the last time someone stuck bonus features on a Godzilla blu-ray that Toho didn't know about, it didn't go very well.
Media Blasters never recovered from that.

Media Blasters also added a grain filter to the later Voltron DVD volumes (episodes 53 and up of the lion series and the Fleet of Doom special) to make it look like they had restored those episodes as painstakingly as the original GoLion and Dairugger-based episodes (when they were in fact pulled from the original broadcast masters), so it's not like they were some perfect company that messed up once. They just happened to mess with the wrong company.

Sea Monster's audio as heard on MST3K is a version that Toho has forbidden Criterion to use, so that one would be out even in the case of a miracle.
Today the official MST channel on YouTube uploaded a clip from 418. I'm sure that's a case of "fair use" and not proof of a deal with Hofheinz-Nicholson. But I thought it was worth noting anyway.

From what I've heard, TOHO has been pretty difficult working with Criterion. They only want the Japanese versions and are specifying which remasters Criterion can use. The American cuts are absent from the release aside from King Kong vs Godzilla which oddly has the American cut as the main feature and the Japanese cut as a bonus. Criterion will do additional retouching to the supplied remasters and will be handling the subtitles which should be accurate unlike past releases.
So I very much doubt this moves the needle on MST3K releases.

From what I've heard for years, Toho wants to make the American releases of these films are inferior to the Japanese releases. From what I'm told they want more Japanese consumers to buy their products instead of importing cheaper ones from over here.

This sounds EXACTLY like what Toei does with many of the shows they've licensed to the West (with Dragon Ball and those AWFUL Japan-only Transformers shows being the most obvious examples).

Wouldn't allowing both MST episodes to be released here sort of work towards their goal?
