As I stated, I'm not talking about the source material. I'm talking about digital artifacts, and yes, in commercially produced DVDs. Apparently they don't bother you since you don't notice them; I must be nit-picky.

I don't see artifacts on either of my DVD players (PC and Sony 5-disc), so maybe it's your DVD player???
The picture is pretty dark, though, but not enough to really bother me. I pointed it out in the e-mail so that I could see what was up.

Forrest, if you visit most of the DVD review sites, they will point out the artifacts that "U" is talking about for an individual movie. I have to say as picky as I can be, many of these artifacts that they list are so miniscule that I don't notice them. I was reading the "Dark City" review at digitalbits (I think) and frankly, the picture looks nice and clean. Nothing that distracts or takes away from the movie at all (for me), but they'll point out what problems are there if you want to know. When I do notice these artifacts, it's the unstable blacks (which would include that "darkness" that Forrest speaks about, where you lose the definition and clairity) that seem to catch and bother my eye.

It's not so much that the blacks in Merlin or Time Chasers are undefined or unstable, but that the episode is simply...too dark. I've got a feeling that this little screwup was a simply mistake that someone overlooked...or, as I guessed earlier, it was intentional.

Like I said, it's "too dark" So you only have pixellation in Merlin and Time Chasers? All my Rhino DVDs have that.

We all rightfully refrain from trading Rhino eps out of respect for BBI and their royalties but if they can't get it right and better fan copies exist it's tempting.

As I said, the pixellation is throughout for me...but I'd appreciate your testing something for me just the same. Would you mind popping in Time Chasers, and go to the part where Nick jumps out of the plane, leaving Lisa? In the shot where he's in the water and yells "Lisa!" his face is a blurry, pixellated mess on my end. Could you check that shot specifically on your DVD? It's pretty obvious on mine.

You mean the part right after she get's shot? I just checked mine and it looks fine.

I also noticed that Merlin's Shop pixialtes a lot too. In darker scenes the pixilation is terrible. However, none of my other Rhino DVD pixilate!!! Rhino, WTF? Oh, and U, the episode is not just simply "too dark", it's so dark that you cant even see the dam seats! And even in Time Chasers this little problem shows up. Forrest, I watched my Merlin disc last night, and I have no pixelation what-so-ever. The picture was kinda dark, but that didn't make the experience any worse for me. Again, maybe it's your DVD player, or maybe you're sitting too close to the screen .

All the DVD players I have aren't exactly the best, so it's possible that it looks fine on better systems.

ok I finally got mine. The Merlin opening credits are dark enough to somewhat hide M&TB. The picture (& sound) are clear. I guess it could be a tad darker, but not enough to cause any problem. I still need to compare it with my tape to see how close they are.

I actually found on the set that Ian and I picked up we only needed to up that black level only a tad but it really didn't need any correction and when I put the tv back on I could not even notice a difference for tv programs. The only other thing was at two brief points (30 secs to a minute) in Time Chasers the audio on the film not Mike and the bots became vey low but was still audible, odd but no biggie. The interview was great and was really long clocking in at a half hour and is well editied too boot. I really felt it was worth our money and that the problems may be player specific.

I got my Vol. 5 set this weekend, and I have the same problems as Forrest. My DVD player has never had a problem playing any other DVD I've gotten. The picture on Merlin is much darker than the other disks, and even adjusted to be as light as possible, I can't see M&TB during the credits or sometimes during scenes in the movie. It is much darker than the Scifi ep I have on tape. I mean, I cannot see the theater seats AT ALL during the credits. I noticed the picture was much darker than normal during the opening theme song of the episode. It's all dark, the movie, the host segments, everything.
If this was intentional, it was a terrible judgment call. If not intentional, this is a big-time oversight. Either way, they really screwed up with this DVD.
I also got the muffled sound problem at a few points in Time Chasers that Jesle wrote of. These things are more than annoying and I think we have the right to complain about it. We have every right to expect top quality when buying any DVD, much less one that's part of a pricey set.

Remember that e-mail I sent to them a while back? I still haven't gotten a response. Oh well, I guess they don't care about us.

I spotted a review on the set and they mention the same problems... MST3K Vol. 5 ReviewI don't have a cheap DVD or TV (I wouldn't allow a Goldstar or a $30 player in my house). And this is by far, the worst looking DVD I've ever purchased. Unprofessional, shoddy. Rhino should be ashamed!
