Just curious, did recordings of any episodes ever look dark? I bought Giant Spider Invasion on DVD-R from mst3kvideos.com and that episode said it was from a digital master, but the image is very dark, like the two episodes on the Vol. 5 box set. Here's a picture to show what I mean: www.nextdimension.org/other/PDVD_005.jpgSo is this dark image Rhino's fault and somehow I just happened to get a bad transfer? Skyroniter was very helpful and quick when I ordered episodes from him, so I don't think it's his fault the image ended up so dark.

I don't know, mastering DVDs is a whole different animal. It obviously takes more work. Ifind a lot of home made discs have that matted, muddy look to them. What I mean is, look at Mikes uni. On a great disc the colors are crisp and you can see the details, like the folds and shadows on the fabric. But in a poor copy, it looks like a mass of color, no light and shadow play on the fabric.
With the VCR you just had to have your TV settings the way you liked it and a strong signal from your cable company and your good to go.
My Giant Spider tape is pretty clean and bright and clear. Of course a digitally remastered copy made by a top company is going to look 1,000 times better.
I don't understand the mechanics of it all. But that's why I'm not that hot to replace all my tapes for discs. Because sometimes the picture on the (home made) DVDs just arent that overwhelmingly better.

The guys at Rhino probably wanted to make the picture look more crisp and nice, so they rose the contrast level on the episode, which is a bad move since the theater seats will almost always become to dark to see against credits.
I actually thought it was kind of cool , because it seemed like a real movie theater, where you cant really see the guys up there wisecracking, you can only hear their voices and barely make them out. But I've only watched Merlin and Boggy Creek so far, and Boggy Creek wasn't contrasted, so I guess Merlin was a lower quality recording or something, that's why they tried to darken it. It's only noticable during the credits.

I STILL haven't gotten a response from Rhino. I guess I shouldn't think about it anymore.

Forrest, this seems a little strange, but on amazon I saw one person, (just one) who complained about the exact same thing you are, and they also live in the Las Vegas area. Could be a local shipment?

The darkness is insane. I live in New York, so it's not local.

Well, time didn't help either.
I can't believe I didn't notice this myself when I bought it last week. Too bad my original tape melted.
There is something wrong with Touch of Satan too. Melissa gets a weird line down her face sometimes. I had thought this was my player but now I'm not sure.
Any word on refunds from Rhino?

I think that's a problem with the actual film, which is not Rhino's fault. Your right. When it first came out I compared it, and it's on both. It was part of the film they had.
