Paul Chaplin is brilliant, however, I'm very skeptical about this new show. What made MST3K a classic IMO was you had an entire team of great comedy writers bouncing ideas off each other and perfecting riffs.
Hopefully Paul's got some good writers to back him up.

Whoa, man, this is interesting news. Not sure how I feel about this. Definitely intersted. Not really excited, though. Too many unknowns and factors that could derail this from being truly great and/or truly funny. Like Paul Chaplin voicing crow? What?? And "new writing and perorming talent." I'd rather attempt to high-jump the Hoover Dam than try to pull that off, or try to replace any performer of any long revered role with such devoted followers. There may be some great things to come out of this, though. I'm interested to see what some of the merchandise will be. Hopefully not just MST3k: The Animated Shorts mouse pads. Perhaps some former Brains will come back and at least make cameos - thus warming some of the bad blood (if there is any) between any members of the original staff. Also, I wonder if this has anything to do with the supposed new MST documentary I saw mentioned at the Darkstar site and started a thread about here: forrestcrow.proboards47.com/index.cgi?board=deep&action=display&thread=1185226370

I'm excited. Look, this is mostly about a cool new official MST3K website. This is just a fun little feature, a web toon about Gypsy, Tom, and Crow, the kind of thing you'd expect on an offical website. It's not going to air on Cartoon Network or pass itself off as "The New MST3K," so don't get to riled up about only 2 writers and different voices.
It's just a fun little web-toon, you should really just relax.

I have no interest in this. If I didn't run a blog that specifically reported MST3K news, I wouldn't be watching this closely at all. Jim is simply cashing in on what Mike Nelson renewed interest in, via Rifftrax and Film Crew. I'm glad to see Paul getting back into it, but (on Jim's behalf) this just smacks of being a total sell-out and trying to cash-in. I mean, he can't be feeling great, with the other Brains making money off projects inspired by the property that he currently owns, and all he has is income from DVD sales and ancient merchandise.
This whole thing just pisses me off. I love Paul, but I have a bad feeling about this. Unless Joel, Mike, Bill, Trace, and/or Kevin give their blessing, I won't be able to fully enjoy this. And I hope the videos are free, because I won't be paying for them, whether I watch them or not.

I'm not excited about this but I feel a little sorry for Jim what with all the anger that seems to be directed at him for actually doing something with the MST3K property he owns. Things could be a lot worse, he could have sold MST3K to someone and let them make this really horrible low brow version. He's not perfect but there are plenty of examples of producers who have been really awful. I wonder if Joel will get a cut from the website. I think he got royalties for all the shows after he left and the DVDs.

It's not going to... pass itself off as "The New MST3K"? Wouldn't that be the intent of calling the 10 seasons of episodes "The Legacy Series"? I think that's EXACTLY what it's supposed to be.
But the real question is: Who's doing Tom Servo's voice? My computer is printing the banner right now....

Not to sound pessimistic, but I agree with all the pessimistic posts in this thread. My money is soley on this being Mallon trying to cash in on the "new" "success" of Rifftrax, FilmCrew, etc. of late. Doesn't mean it couldn't be good, but I wouldn't bet my first pessimistic nickle on it.

One of the writers at TV Guide just sums it all up in one statement:
"Producers like to play Follow the Leader". That would explain Jim's attitude here.

To quote any given Star Wars character in any given episode: "I have a baaaaaaad feeling about this!"

I wonder if Joel will get a cut from the website. I think he got royalties for all the shows after he left and the DVDs. Jim Mallon was the only one who got the royalties from what I understand. It's part of the reason that things are the way they are.

You know, given the huge amount of outcry against this, I'm gonna say: give this a chance. Jim certainly has been villanized among fans recently and it sounds like he's done some not so good things to some of his former peers, but you gotta remember he did a lot FOR them too. He gave Joel an outlet, after he felt he had reached a glass ceiling in creativity without losing his scruples. He gave Kevin Murphy a chance and advanced him up from a key grip on Blood Hook to show runner by the end of MST. He hired many of our favorites like Mike, Bill, and Frank.
He is also a funny guy. He recognized how great MST3K could be when most other people wouldn't have put it on their station. He did all of those hilarious pranks at Madison. He also really gave life to Gypsy, who granted many don't like, but I think is a sweet character. He also still recognizes that Paul Chaplin is a funny man. Jim at least knows humor and I think he was funny, but I guess I can't prove it.
It seems like all the bad attitude before the show has even started is a little premature. Let's see what happens, at the very least, I think the website might be pretty cool. Plus I'm sure us MSTies will be able to give feedback, and let them know if we don't like it.

We all need to step back and give this a chance to see what Jim has in mind for the site and these new web-toons. If there wasn't all this (supposed) animus between all parties, we might see them all involved in this. Wouldn't you like to see Joel and Mike in the theater with the 'bots, Dr. F, Pearl, and Larry sending the movies, with Frank, Brain Guy and Bobo generally mucking things up? Plus visits by Pitch, Nuveena, Jan in the Pan, etc.? I know that is a pipe dream, but, what we have now with these projects going and the DVD sales still going strong, is better than not seeing anything of our favorite cowtown puppet show. So let's just take a breath and wait until the site is up. Who knows, it might not be ready by Monday. BTW, Van Hagar....FREEBIRDS!
