A spectacular body of work for sure. But I gotta go with Kubrick's crowning work, 2001. It's the absolute pinnacle of profound and predominately silent cinema. I've always had a thing for directors who use silence, for contemplative purposes or not, and it's pretty obvious that 2001 is the granddaddy of that type of film.

I voted for Paths of Glory, but like everyone else, this is a hard call to make. I've loved 2001 since I was a kid, and Strangelove ranks way up there. But everytime I see Paths of Glory it just moves me emotionally like nothing else Kubrick did.

I'm in for Dr. Strangelove. As Forrest knows, I respect Kubrick, but I'm not a fan. I think at times he can be overblown and pretentious (and I don't like it when other people act like me).  But Peter Sellers and George C. Scott are always brilliant- and together they make for some good watchin'. |

Had to go with Lolita. Kubrick really took a chance and walked that fine line. Kept pretty true to the book, too. I recommend this to any of our under-30 something board members. They may be pleasantly surprised. Peter Sellars shines!

Okay, I lied. ACO with Dr. Strangelove being a close second (and they're on my list 2nd and 3rd overall, Citizen Kane being number one).

A few weeks ago, I finally saw The Shining on the big screen. It was at the FOX Theater, which is the old-fashion Palace Theater still around here in Atlanta (the theater is 75+ years old). Anyway, I saw the movie in the balcony along with a married couple who I'm friends with. (I really should've gone with someone else, though, because they had a silly fight that partially ruined the evening.)
The movie was great to see with a good crowd. By a "good crowd" I mean no cell phone conversations or crying babies were to be heard all night, and everyone was really into watching the movie. Although the picture was huge (these old theaters have giant screens), my one complaint is the sound could've been better - they really need to upgrade the sound system there. But the movie itself is in MONO, so maybe a better sound system wouldn't have made a difference. The large screen, though, made the movie really engrossing - I mean, when the "Here's Johnny!" scene happens and Nicholson sticks his head through the hole in the door, his noggin was GIGANTIC!!
So seeing this on the big screen with a good crowd is a must. Highly recommended (...but leave the married friends at home).

Dr. Strangelove, followed by 2001. I'm a huge fan of both Barry Lyndon and The Killing, however.
