I was just wondering if anyone else here has ever seen the amazing work of this director? The Holy Mountain is one of my favorite films of all time, no other film ever hit me like that film did.
The main films he is known for are:
Fando y Lis El Topo The Holy Mountain Sante Sangre
The films are shot surreal so it seems like they don't make sense at times but always come together at the end. I highly recommend checking them out, they are truly amazing experiences.

I have them all, and have been a fan of Jodorowsky for years.

One of my favorite directors of all time. El Topo is one of my favorite films ever. I think my mom was in the filming of Holy Mountain. I got to show the film to her. Santa Sangre is also just great. Plus it has the other big role of Jesus Juarez, who was the midget guard in Deathstalker 3.
I'm only missing Fando y Lis.

I'm only missing Fando y Lis. I have it on DVD (in its original US issue). This is going for over $60 on Amazon. You might get a copy cheaper on Ebay. Dr. Montana, if you only "think" that Jodorowsky is a goddamn hippie, watch Fando & Lis. Then you will be CERTAIN that he's a goddamn hippie!! lol.

I saw it in a couple of stores, I just have to remember which one. As for Jodorowsky, my cousin has a book signed by him about his life and what is cool is that if you read the interviews during El Topo and La montaña sagrada, you can't understand a thing he is saying since he is just so nuts and on drugs. It basically make no sense at all. During Santa Sangre, you can make sense of it and I think that shows in his movies. Santa Sangre is the most cohesive one. The fact that he is nuts was a plus to the films IMO.

www.subcin.com/jod01.htmlOk, I read this interview. All I have to say is that this guy sounds like an idiot hippie. The kind of "intellectual" you meet in college and want to kick his ass. And, guess what Rafael, he killed 300 rabbits with karate blows to the neck for El Topo. Apparently, according to the interview, he wanted thousands of rabbits for some grand action sequence but because he could only get 300 he decided it be better if they were all dead and came up with the wonderful idea that El Topo was a symbol of "the plague". And he admits it, killing the rabbits, was some sort of vague spiritual experience for him, somehow managing to compare it to a woman's orgasm and butter. Reading about the random symbolism in his films only makes my skin crawl. The interview here struck me as from a man that is so open minded that his brains have fallen out. I'll gladly avoid his films. You will avoid the films? Oh my god how will I sleep at night! Here is another thing to make you avoid it. Roger Ebert named Santa Sangre in his Great Movies list.

You don't physically see any animals get killed in his films. Most people don't get his films and unless you are really into art and film you probably won't like it. When people i know ask to borrow them i don't ever elt them borrow them unless i know that they will either enjoy it or appreciate it.
Dr. Montana: If you've ever seen Cannibal Holocaust, El Topo is nowhere near as gruesome as Cannibal Holocaust. Like i said there isn't any actual animal slaughter in the film unlike the Cannibal films from Italy. And just because you think the guy is a hippie doesn't mean you should pass on his films. They are truly unique experiences.

I have three but so far have only watched "El Topo." I enjoyed it but found the movie mostly incomprehensible. I didn't know about the killing of the rabbits though. There was no need for that.

I've never seen El Topo, but I've seen many, many, many (almost the whole film) clips from it, and read a lot about it, and I basically know everything that happens (hell, in the interview posted a few posts above, he basically tells you everything about the damn movie). I'm all for unique experiences in film, but I just think this one sounds retarded. I won't say anything definite, 'cause I hadn't seen it the whole way through yet, but I have not liked what I have seen so far, and the fact that the director is a lunatic hippie of the highest order doesn't make it any better for me. And Rafael, calm down man, you took my post all personal, like it was intended to keep you up all night. This from the guy who hates Ebert and did a thread about him because he had the audacity to give a bad review to A Clockwork Orange and Team America (which is the weakest effort Matt and Trey have done besides Cannibal). Yeah Jodorowsky is a hippie freak and he really was into drugs but so what. It really doesn't mean he can make a great movie. If you think his movies sucks and that he is crazy (which I think he was or is) that is your opinion but you could surely express it without being a pretentious jerk, which is what your post look likes. People here made a thread for fans of him and to discuss his work and its alright to disagree with them but maybe not to just come and crap on the guy and say he should get his a s s kicked and that his work is retarded. I love that retarded work and seeing el topo in the rundown Circo Volador (that looks like something straight from Santa Sangre) was one of my greatest movie watching experience of my life.

Watch The Holy Mountain. I thought it was MUCH better than El Topo. I thought El Topo was better and Holy Mountain was just too out there especially the lame ending. Still parts of it, especially the introduction of each member of the expedition, were great. Still El Topo was just funner to me plus the location and all were awesome while Holy Mountain suffers to me because some of the location lose realness especially when you know the city. Still I'm a fan and Herzog and Jodorowsky are probably my favorite directors of all.

I thought the scenery in The Holy Mountain was great as well as the very "literal" takes on religion. I thought the ending was cool as it had a meaning that kinda came out of nowhere. I think the reason The Holy Mountain hit me more was that i am very open minded about the different religions being that i have looked into all different types of religions and Gods. The part like you said with the different people being introduced was cool because they were all Gods from the ROman and Greek era.
Speaking of Herzog, i just watched Nosferatu the other night and i forgot how awesome the scenery and the score that plays is just incredible.
I think Jodorowsky is up there with my fav directors but my fav is Lucio Fulci by far.

Just to set the record straight i never comdemned Cannibal Holocaust. I only stated that El Topo did not SHOW the animals getting killed like in Cannibal Holocaust. I think Cannibal Holocaust is a decent film, yes i don't agree with the animal slaughter but it happened and it's done and over with. Same with El Topo, i don't agree that he killed all those rabbits but it happened and it's over. I think El Topo is a great film and i get over the fact that there are dead animals in it. It's not like i get off to it or anything.

Alright, fellas, calm down. Forrest, you know I love you but you're a fireball. Not necessarily a bad thing. Passion is important. Raph, don't know you that well, but you seem like a cool guy. Just try to keep the debate on the subject and don't turn it into personal attacks.
