It's not Christmas time until I hear "Blue Christmas" by Elvis. Seriously. OK then I like big choral productions of Christmas Carols preferably done by an English Choir and music. I think "Celtic" especially "Scottish" Christmas music is totally BOGUS and modern! The Irish were too poor to celebrate Christmas and it was a religious day anyway. No self-respecting Scot would ever be caught DEAD celebrating an ENGLISH holiday. Scots celebrate New Years. To bookend this rant. I really really like "Christmas Eve in the Drunk Tank" by the Pogues. Now that's Christmas for you! Low did a version on that Christmas mini-album of Blue Christmas. Beautiful. Oh and we do celebrate Xmas big time. Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) is a big, mental night for most, apart from those poor sods working in the bars, and on New Year's Day there's usually a football (soccer) match on. It used to be the big Old Firm derby between Rangers and Celtic but it got moved, though I think it's on the 3rd this January. Xmas is a bit more low key but we have a big day with the family and the ones we love. Plus the pubs and clubs have tried, quite successfully, to turn Xmas Eve into a mini Hogmanay. It can be a really good night mainly because everywhere isn't quite as jam-packed. Then on Xmas Day most pubs are shut, but what you find are there are a few that open during the day so the alci's can get a drink and some Xmas dinner then they close so the staff can get theirs. Then a few others open at night so the young 'uns who can't be bothered sitting with their families can go out. New Year's Day is the same and both are low key but can be very enjoyable.

Oh and I'm Santa in my avatar! Was made to do it when I was working at the Student Union in Paisley and it was the big Xmas do and the big French bloke who was going to play him got drunk so I was paid to fart around in a Santa suit for four hours! I recommend everyone with enough girth try it once!

Right I'm going to say it, and I never thought I'd ever say this, but that one by Mariah Carey. Is it All I want For Christmas Is You? Despite her best wobbly voiced efforts she can't ruin this cracking little number!
I know have to bathe in turps.

Vince Guaraldi "A Charlie Brown Christmas" I am agreement on that one, with the exception of "Linus & Lucy". Nothing like a little jazzy version of "O Tannenbaum" to set the mood. I guess some others I'd pick are pretty much standards like Sinatra's "Do You Hear What I Hear", Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and the Boston Pops "Sleigh Ride" among others.

They do something on NPR every Christmas Eve, I think it is the choir at Kings College in Cambridge. I seem to catch the program every year, and usually enjoy it.

Mud - Lonely this Christmas. Great parody of Blue Christmas that works in it's own right, plus fond memories of winning a bet with a mate who thought Elvis did it. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ8-UT8ojrk

It's not Christmas time until I hear "Blue Christmas" by Elvis. That song always reminds me of the old SNL skit with Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Gary Kroeger as the Osmonds. And I hear it at least once every Christmas season. Right I'm going to say it, and I never thought I'd ever say this, but that one by Mariah Carey. Is it All I want For Christmas Is You? Despite her best wobbly voiced efforts she can't ruin this cracking little number! I know have to bathe in turps. I like that song.
