Audio commentary would be really tedious to get through. Really how much could one say about the theater segments? I would love to see them try and have continuous commentary during the theater segments. Most likely, they'd fall right in and end up making comments about the film itself, which means we'd have riffing on top of riffing! Oops, I just blew my mind. I could also see fun little tidbits like, "Oh, this is the scene that was so painful it made Joel try to hang himself in his office. Took four people to cut him loose!". Or, "I remember this scene vividly because Mike and Bridget got in a fight about going to see her mother for dinner. She cried and it took Mike and hour to coax her out of the bathroom." How great would that be? Unfortunately, Mike has said a few times that he did a mental purge after every episode, and if that's true of everybody else, then yes, in reality a commentary would be boring because they would have no memory of the event. But I can still dream. ;D

Just to throw a little fat on the fire, I noticed that Deep Discount has The Hellcats listed as No Longer Available. Amazon still has it available, though. I'm wondering if Rhino has lost the rights to this episode and/or it could be a possibility for the 20th anniversary boxset or the next release. Like I said, just a little fatty speculation.

I'm almost certain some fans would stage an all-out revolt against Shout! if "The Hellcats" was on the 20th Anniversary set...

Shout said they do not plan on releasing any of the Rhino-released episodes, at least for awhile. Rhino may have renewed the rights to HELLCATS when they renewed the other Vol. 1 Crown International titles.

I think only limited commentaries could work. Perhaps condenced, 20 minute versions of the epps (host segments, stand-out moments from the movie, and enough plot points for the film to make sense) with commentary over them.
A entire episode commentary really wouldn't work.

Maybe they could do Inside Look kind of things, like they did on the "Seinfeld" DVDs - little four- or five-minute featurettes about specific episodes, with the Brains reflecting on the movie or the riffing or whatever.

I loved the intros on Volume 5, and I'd love to see something like that again. A full-fledged commentary for the host segments would be great, but it would be way more work, and more than I'd expect even for an anniversary release.

Great idea. The Seinfeld boxes are, at least in my opinion, the solid gold criterion by which other TV DVD's should be assessed. Obviously it's a much more popular show than is MST3k, but nevertheless. ...more than I'd expect even for an anniversary release. I have to respectfully disagree. Audio commentary/subtitles, intros with the cast, etc. are far more than I'd expect from a Rhino anniversary set. But this is Shout we're talking about. If they didn't intend to give us a motherload, then Brian Ward over at the Shout forums shouldn't have been getting our hopes up with all that "first set done right" and "MSTies will not be disappointed!" hoopla. Off-topic: I'm at 500! Whoo!

So Shout Factory is supposed to announce the episodes at Comic Con, but does anyone know which day? I would think at the 20th Anniversary Panel but does anyone know that for sure?

Probably at the panel, but there's also a Shout booth which will be there all weekend, so you never know. We might get word on the episodes as early as tomorrow.

Just got this email from the CT guys (Joel in particular):
This week we're shooting interviews for the much-anticipated Mystery Science Theater 20th anniversary box set. The producers at "Shout Factory" asked us to come to the shoot, "camera ready" and dressed as "we'd want our children and grandchildren to see us". So, I'm curious, how exactly do you pick out an outfit for something like that? And this weekend, Trace, Josh, Frank, Mary Jo and I will be traveling to San Diego to attend Comic-con on and do a special panel celebrating the 20th anniversary of MST3K. Which is also being taped for the 20th anniversary box set. It's going to feel like Christmas in July! I can't wait to watch Trace and Frank walk through the dealer's room together and cause some major MSTie frenzy! Please come by and say hello if you happen to be at the con.

Now I'm curious as to what strange outfits they may come up with in response to that.
