Yay for the panel being on the DVD. I was hoping for that.

ComicCon Panel and the History of MST both as extras. This is why we buy the DVD's of ...well, of anything! I am so excited about this set. Shout! has already done better than Rhino and the friggin' set didn't even come out yet.

Amazon waits until an item ships before charging, right?

That is correct, Mogol. They may make a temporary charge, to make sure you're good for it. Then they back that out; and when the item ships, they charge you.

Not to be a party pooper here, but I don't understand why everyone's so impressed by these extras. The Comic-Con footage will be great to have, but unless Shout itself organized the panel, it's just serendipity. Movie trailers? Eh, nothing special... Rhino was willing to give us those. "History of MST3k" has potential, but the word "featurette" (as opposed to "documentary") has me worried.
It just seems like anything here that's worthwhile (Comic-Con footage) was happy coincidence and not actual effort on Shout's part. Shout Factory is supposedly a place where old obscure shows are given the 5 star treatment with loads of bonus features. But what's offered here seems rather light, especially for a big anniversary set. Not to mention all of the whisperings from Shout about "things that Rhino never even considered!" If My So-Called Life deserves a whole disc of extras and audio commentaries on every episode, why not MST3k? How much could it possibly cost to bring in Joel or somebody and have them talk for a few hours? Heck, Rhino, the company that everyone hates, was willing to do a full-on reunion sketch complete with sets, Brains, bots, costumes...
In fact, Shout doesn't even need to produce any new material. They could give us some commercials for the show, the Turkey Day bumpers, the Scrapbook tape/This Is MST3k etc. and I'd be happy.
In the end, despite my criticisms, I suppose we should be grateful for what we are getting. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise me with the "History" featurette. Still, as it stands now, the bonus features are a little disappointing. Am I wrong?

The comic-con panels are nothing but advertising and marketing. Shout probably gets a tax break for putting on the reunion.

Even if Shout did organize the Comic-Con panel, they aren't going to do that every time they put out a new box. What does that leave them with for set #2 and beyond? If the trend towards limited extras continues, we'll be down to one featurette (concerning God knows what; "History of MST3k" is pretty all-inclusive) and a couple of trailers - if not less. If that ends up being the case, then Rhino was giving us far better with Volumes 11, 12 and 10.2.
When I think about it, even the panel has a good chance of being a dud. From what I've seen of previous group discussions at the Conventio-Cons, the audience can get pretty rowdy. Considering that, the fact that anyone at the convention can walk in (i.e. non-fans), and the limited time available, it sounds like a lot of repeated questions and precious time down the tubes. If I had a choice between a panel where most of the time is wasted with old questions and silly requests ("Do Gypsy's voice!" "Sing the theme song!") or a collection of proper, insightful in-studio interviews and/or audio commentaries with the Brains or people involved with the original films, I'd unquestionably pick the latter.
Come on, Shout. You want to give us "the first MST3k set done right?" Then do it right.

Any self-promotion, I believe, can be written off.

Where should I begin on how wrong the very notion is? The only exception would be the movie and we know how that DVD turned out. The fact that the time combined for writing, performing and editing an episode was most likely less than the time then it took to pick out that episode's movie? The fact that most of the time you'll just have commentators commentating on commentators' comments and you won't be able to hear the comments being commented on? And that's not even mentioning the original dialogue. How about the fact that these epsidoes are more than 90s minutes long and most likely you'll just end up with about 5 minutes of worthwhile comments? Kind of like an interview about the episode in question. Here's features that I would like to see Shout Factory implement: Optional Subtitles, color coded for both the feature and the riffing. Now, there's a workable idea. Rifftracks Subtitle tracks. Info that shows up during the episode that explain references for the spacially and chronologically impaired. That is, people who didn't live in the area in the late 80s, early 90s.

It just occurred to me that the history of MST3K featurette could very easily be either the This is MST3K special or the Making of MST3K special from the Sci Fi Channel.

Okay, scratch the audio commentary. Your 'Rifftracks Subtitles" idea accomplishes the same thing, and more efficiently. I like it. So why can't Shout include it?
To clarify, here's what I'd personally like to see on the set in addition to what's been announced:
1. braindeadzombie's optional Obscure Reference Guide subtitles
2. Brief introductions for all four episodes. Something like the ones Mike did on Rhino boxes 4 and 5, but a tad longer and maybe done in-character with Servo and Crow.
3. More interviews with the filmmakers, like the ones Rhino did with Bert I. Gordon, Robert Fiveson, and Don Sullivan.
4. "Tidbits:" TV commercials, Turkey Day bumpers, MST Hour Jack Perkins segments, whatever's available.
(I'm also hoping that the "History of MST3k" segment is a half-hour long [at least] and involves interviews with the Brains or some rare footage, but I'm afraid it'll just be some guy talking over stills and random clips.)
I don't think that's too much to ask for, especially considering that this is the big "20th Anniversary Edition."
EDIT: "efficiently" typo

Bare in mind this is the first of, hopefully, many boxsets. They probably don't want to blow their full load on the first set. Are the extras listed even the definitive final list? I think we should wait and see before writing them off.

Are the extras listed even the definitive final list? I think we should wait and see before writing them off. The wording is "we've learned that the bonus material will include...", so no, I don't think it's the definitive final list at all. And I agree that we should wait a little bit before flying into a thousand posts that end with "they just didn't care!"

Really, the only stuff I would like to see a bonus material is the BBI produced tapes. The Last Dance Raw, Scrapbook (preferably uncut) and the Sci-Fi channel specials. I really have no desire to see skits or anything that has to utilize freeze frame photos of the old sets to do. I can't really imagine that there is a whole ton of stuff available. It was a low budget show for sure and really how many times can you watch a robot puppet fall apart and still have it be funny?
I like the idea of a subtitle track to maybe explain a joke or two and maybe keep count how many times something gets referenced in the series. Intros by cast are nice but again not really anything to write home about. Audio commentary would be really tedious to get through. Really how much could one say about the theater segments?
