You know, this is quickly becoming the popular opinion on this board. "Rush sucks" might be the unpopular opinion.
Looks like you have something to post in this thread after all, phantomengineer.

Did anyone ever see that Yo la Tengo video for their song "Sugarcube?" It's the one where the band has to go to Rock School (sent there by corp executives) and learn stage histrionics, "rock" poses, and the best part, have a Kiss-clad professor reading to them in a mock-shakespearan voice from Rush's classic of dreck, "Closer to the Heart". (in case you don't know Yo La Tengo are a very brainy lo-fi nerdy, decidedly alternative no-hit band).
Rush suck double dickweed...
My other e-pins:
Electronic dance music is the most exciting innovative music to come along in years.
Led Zep suck
Heavy Metal is awful, esp. Metallica
The greatest music ever recorded was made by obscure and largely unknown muscians and composers for 60's and early 70's European exploitation flix.
Prog rock is dickweedy, esp. Yes
And it is possible to love both punk rock, Irish folk, Abba, industrial music, gothic, EBM, Herb Alpert, Garage, Surf, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, The Carpenters, The Beatles, Techno, Drum and Bass, Bob Dylan, 60's exploit. soundtracks...etc. (though not necessarily at the same time)

That sounds a little bad, I suppose. I mean, what's next discoteque? What's new Disco Stu? Jeez louise!!! Whatever happened to self judgment before the judgment of others? And, yes, Rush does rule, deal with it!!! And Yes rules too!!! Evil, I tell you, I'm evil!!! Servo

Now, now, Servo
We all have our tastes (I like Sierra Nevada, how about you?), but I'll say this...
Carpenters and Abba excelled at what they did, in their genre: beautifully written pop jingles with gorgeous vocals you can dance to if you are so inclined (okay you can't dance to Carpenters but you get the point).
Rush and Yes write overblown, pretentious lyrics mixed with a stew of cheesy keyboards, dull whiny high-pitched vocals and psuedo-intellectual shallow ponderings about the deep life...
Give me the bright shiny shallow surface of clean pure pop anyday. Give me even Barbie Girl...I like to laugh...
Now, Servo, I want you to compare and contrast Tom Sawyer (mean, mean pride, or whatever he says) and Dancing Queen ("Friday night and the lights are low, looking for a place to go") and get back to me here (Three pages, double-spaced, footenotes, due Sat.)
And go watch Angel's Revenge again: You'll feel better.

Hahahahahaha!!!! You make my day. I find it amusing how you can even compare the great, not only lyrical, but guitar work, drumming, bass playing, and even, yes, keyboards, of "Tom Sawyer" to that disco garbage "Dancing Queen". Does it really take 4 people to sing a song? I don't think so. With 4 people, I'd make a band, they made a choir. There is no comparison and I'm saddened that one was made. You want pop music? Listen to the country station, that's all it is now anyways. Let disco die!!!!
I think the Who said it best when they said........ "Long live rock!!!"
Servo
P.S. Bite me!!!

Now now, play nice you two, or I'm going to turn this car right around, and no one will get to see Disneyland.
Keep in mind this thread is a chance for people to risk embarassment, so let's keep the flaming to a minimum, okay?
For the record, I like Rush and Abba. Not for the same reasons, obviously.

Gee, you Proggers are touchy... What's wrong with a choir... Are you saying The Mormon Tabernacle outta pack it in or go out and buy a fenders, gibsons, and Tamas? Weird. As for quoting the Who (who I happen to like a lot--they are everything Rush and Yes are not) they also happened to sing in that song, "Rock is dead" Just kidding...I love rock too. I just don't get why people think you can't like rock and dance music at the same time (and be heterosexual) Which was the point of my e-pion being unpopular. P.S. Kiss my true grits!

Ahhh, you guys know me, I'm just sensitive about my music. I have nothing against any of the music you mentioned. I feel that way for one simple reason too. Because out of all you mentioned, you didn't mention the most deplorable music of them all, the one that makes my blood boil to even hear it referred to as music................. RAP!!!
It's not music kids!!! It's talking and drums and sampling!!!
And, no, I said sampling, not sampo. A sampo would make it good,
Always rageous,
Servo

I agree with you. I forgot to mention my distaste for hip hop rap. I mean, at first I really liked it. Grandmaster flash and Sugarhill Gang were great. Even early Run DmC. Then all the violence and macho posturing and sexism set in. The stuff is deplorable now. Can't wait for it fall out of fashion.

Darn right I would.
Topic? I like 80s music. Bad synth-pop, one-hit wonders, cheesy hair band ballads, new wave, early rap, you name it. Why just this morning on my way to the office, I was enjoying a homemade 80s compilation CD. It featured (among others): Dan Hartman, Billy Squier, The Outfield, Mellencamp, INXS, The Pretenders, Prince, and White Lion. And I thought as I listened, "Wow, White Lion was pretty good."
Yeah, I know what I just wrote.

I'm glad to see someone arguing musical taste with Servo and Sampo besides me. I disagree with so many of the opinons in this thread I'll just stay out of it. But since this thread is for unpopular musical opinions I'll just say Bob Dylan. Not that popular hear but the Dylantree board I vist has over 10,000 members. I'll have to see how many MSTies there are over there. We could gang up on you Rush bums. Oh darn, I said I was going to stay out of this.

my unpopular opinion?
I do not hate any form of music. really, some people say they hate the antics of Britney Spears, or despise these newly spawned pop punk acts. Bob Dylan was a phony (yes, I've heard this from someone) and that Frank Zappa was overrated (I know, totally without merit, but someone DID say it!) and yet, I just rant and rave about how good the musicians i like are!
hey, let's talk about some post-rock/experimental bands! Godspeed You Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky are amazing, in that they drone on and make my head explode (in a similar fashion as Zappa's solos)
I like some pop music....Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, and Sublime. I personally think the bass clarinet is the coolest instrument ever. and I think the guitar is not a string instrument, but a percussion instrument. so there, unpopular, I guess.
