DVD2AVI will do it. First you need to rip the movie to your HDD with Smart Ripper DVD Decrypter would work just as well, correct?

most of the solutions proposed ( without converting the file to an avi and losing quality) involve cost. can any of you mention some hardware specs you have on the machines you are using this on and tell me how smoothly it runs. i am running a amd 64 fx 51 800mhz with a 1GB of ram. windows xp serpak 2 up to date.i have a dvd rom and a relatively new benq dvd burner. i have run into issues with dvd shrink before not allowing me to reproduce my tv show back ups that i normally do. i had to basically reinstall windows last time to get every thing running again smoothly with nero. ( nero ver 6.6.1.4) money is a concern. that is why i am hesitant to go out and buy software i will not be able to work with. thanks all the info and steps are good i am following them but am stuck after having converted the ac3's to wav's :-( thanks for the help and advice I run an Athlon XP 3200 with a gig of ram/ Xp service pack 2/ cheapo memorex DVD-rom / Sony DRU-810 DVDrw / Nero 7 The only problem I have had with burning DVDs is that Adobe Encore is very unfriendly with AMD. --Ian

I'm just absolutely retarded when it comes to ripping DVDs and encoding and demuxing and... BAAAHHHH! I can understand a fair amount of technical stuff, but this just doesn't click with me. It's a miracle I figured out how to burn the DAP releases that I download.

i have never heard of Encore. I am familar with the adobe line of products which can sadly be fairly costly. thanks for the thoughts.
i also have a older mac laptop with a dvd burner in it i am open to mac solutions to this problem if anyone has them.

It has been out for awhile. I like it alot. The best thing I that it is seamless with photoshop. I can edit a menu in Encore and then if i need precise changes I click a button, send it to PS and then save it and encore updates automagically. Now i just have to learn how to use the software better. -Ian

OK, here's what I did for the Fifth Element. All these tools were free and I think this is about as simple as possible. So, let's call this cheap and easy.
First off, I ripped the DVD with DVD Decrypter and let it take care of the demuxing. (Don't lose the .txt files pertaining to chapter marks.)
I then converted the .ac3 to .wav with a program called BeSweet.
I used Audacity as my editor. I didn't find any need to convert the mp3 to anything as audio editors work with audio as wave files anyway, so it's converted by Audacity when you import it. To sync the audio, I just rolled back the RiffTrax so it started at what would be 0:00 on the DVD according to the time sheet. I had to tweak the positioning a little, but having the Disembaudio cues made that easy. I then silenced out Disembaudio and the intro bit and exported as a .wav. I also set the gain on the DVD audio back to -6dB as there were a few spots where I felt the RiffTrax got lost. YMMV.
Converted the .wav to .ac3 with BeSweet again.
To author the disc, I used the DVD Author function of IfoEdit. Dropped in the video, the RifTrax, added the original audio just for fun and the chapter sheet and let this thing remux the title set. This was the longest wait for me.
Once that's done, you are ready to drop those files into a VIDEO_TS folder and burn baby burn. You end up with a plain DVD with no menu but it has chapter marks and whatever extra audio you have room for.
Two side notes, I had to use DVD Shrink to get the size down to a DVD5 as the Fifth Element disc I have is dual layer. Second is a caveat, I've read some claims that discs authored with IfoEdit and audio from BeSweet aren't 100% compatible with all players. I haven't run into this myself, nor have I seen any specific info other than some Pioneers don't like BeSweet. The IfoEdit info seems to pertain to an older version and could possibly be fixed now. Just wanted to throw that out there.
Hope this helps. It really isn't that hard, at least not the way I'm doing it and I'd be happy to provide more detail if people want.

You are correct. Not all players (Pioneer in particular) will play ac3 audio created with BeSweet.
This is talked about on the DAP website in the section on how to make DVD's for DAP.
TMPGEnc Sound Player will convert to AC3, or you can use many different tools to convert the file to MP2.
Your right its not hard...if you know what you're doing. Its easy for anyone with experience with playing with video and audio. But most users dont have the experience or the time to do it. The other thing, is you need to have some background knowledge about DVD files, how they work.

Okay, got another question: Can you name a good (free) program that'll rip the audio off of a video file (not a DVD; an avi or mpg)?

Okay, got another question: Can you name a good (free) program that'll rip the audio off of a video file (not a DVD; an avi or mpg)? For avi, I recommend Virtual Dub. Its free, but it can be a little hard to use. Lots of info on the forums about it. Or PM me and I'll tell you how to extract the audio from an AVI with vDub. For mpg files you can use TMPGEnc. Its a free trial (30 days). It will demux mpg files into a video stream and audio stream. Again, PM me for instructions on how to do this with TMPGEnc.

Does anyone know of a good program to rip a DVD into an avi file? I use Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK). Results are really good, and its free!

I have refined my method:
1. Rip the original DVD to the Hard Drive using a Decrypter program 2. I use Nero 6 to find and recode the movie/audio to mpeg4 3. download the Rifftrax 4. Using Nero 6 I find and add my mpeg4 movie file and the Rifftrax to my project container. 5. I pull down the Rifftrax to the audio line and start it. I stop where Mike tells me to and make a segment cut there. 6. I delete the rifftrax intro and adjust its volume to 100% 7. I then drop down the movie and adjust its volume to about 85% 8. I then drag the Rifftrax to where it is synced up with the movie audio. 9. I then create my chapters, menu and burn the DVD. Voila. Works for me.

I only ask this, because all of the MAC people on the RiffTrax forum are converting to MPEG4 as they cant seem to find a good program that will allow them to use the orginal MPEG2 file to author with.

I ripped Crossroads with Dvd decryptor, but the sound was messed up. The first 45 mins is really low and then it gets loud after that. Anyone else have this problem?
