Hawai'i held their primary elections tonight and there's a senate race on the democrat side that is so close that the deciding votes will have to come from two precincts in our area. Both those precincts had to postpone their voting because of the all the damage from tropical storm Iselle. And what do I hear all night from these politicians and the political pundits? Why, the two politicians are going to fly from Oahu with their campaign followers to go door to door to try to get their votes. Yea, we all know that people without water and electricity who may be trapped on their roads in their homes need nothing more than these people showing up and saying here's some water, vote for ---. We all know that politics always come before people. Jeez. Would any of them even have shown up to help the people who need it here if their little cult didn't need the votes? I wonder why I hate politics?
Sorry, I had to get that out of me. Rant over.

On June 27th a slow moving but persistent lava flow started flowing in a north-easterly direction from Pu'u O'o vent. Over the the last couple of weeks the flow front encountered some cracks which increased the speed of the flow. It's now threatening the Kaohe Homesteads subdivision. Over this weekend the flow started heading northerly which means it's heading...right to the subdivision I live in: Ainaloa. At this moment that direction would put it straight over my house. If it follows the path of the blue line slop patterns at this point it would take it over the small town of Pahoa. All we can do at the moment is have a plan on what we'll do if it heads here and hope for the best. I'll try to post daily to keep everyone informed of the situation for the people living here. Thanks for reading and until next time a slightly shaky aloha.

i've been wondering how close you are to that, chicken, after i first saw it on the news. with the weather and lava, hawaii is definitely not a boring place to live. stay safe - now might be a good time for chickens to learn to fly.

I think learning to fly may be a good idea. As of this morning the flow had moved another 400 yards to the north-northeast. The thinking of the vulcanologists is that it'll either clip the northern edge of the Kaohe Homestead and keep that NE trend or flow around the area and hit Pahoa on it's western edge, right where the main highway splits into two directions within the next 14-16 days. That's an area that has a small shopping center called Pahoa Marketplace that has a local Market called Malama Market where I shop at on occasion, a Longs Drugs and a Burger King along with some doctors offices and small restaurants. The bad thing about this is that if the flow crosses at this spot it'll cut off a huge area where people live. I'm not sure if they'll have to evacuate everyone east of that spot. There's a good 10,000 people or so living in the area. And in case you're wondering that's about 3 miles down the road from me. So even if it misses at first, it can get us if the flows keep coming over time because it'll keep building up and then spread out. And the history of Pu'u O'o and it's never ending eruption doesn't look good for the area. It'll either have to stop for a few days so that the flow has to start up again from the vent, or start flowing towards the east again like the first 30 years of this eruption phase. And there's also the forest fires the flows create that they're keeping an eye on. So even if the flow passes north of Kaohe they may have to send firefighters to the area to keep the fire away from the homes. So anyway, it's just another day in paradise. And I'll keep posting the link daily to keep everyone informed.

I think learning to fly may be a good idea. it's a great song. how could it be a bad idea? is that really a thing? damn, chicken. how often does this kind of thing happen to you guys? between the lava, the fires, the storms the spam and the humidity, when do you find time to wear grass skirts and sip drinks out of coconuts? seriously, keep us posted & stay safe! Very tongue tied and twisted... Yep, for some reason the scientists who study volcanoes can be called volcanologist or vulcanologist. Go figure. The lava has never really been a problem for us until the Pu'u O'o cinder cone collapsed on the northern edge. The lava pond then started overflowing on the north end instead of from the eastern side. Since then there's been trepidation at times but never a real threat, until now. The flow over the last two days has traveled at approximately 400yds a day and has returned again to a more north-easterly direction. The civil defense has put out a "ready for evacuation" bulletin for people in the Kaohe Homestead and are going through the neighborhood to hand them out. So now the direction of the lava is back towards going through that homestead and to the eastern side of Pahoa. I live close by and it's frightening me. I can't imagine what the people right near the flow are going through. Now back to my coconut filled with passion-orange and my cool grass skirt made of plastic.
