I go away for a short while and the "unmentionable" is mentioned. That's okay, this is Hawai'i. Almost anyone is welcome here...see how I used the word almost? I've been gone for a short bit because, well, life is tough. It's like beef jerky at the moment. I may, or may not, have a girlfriend right now , my sister and I are not getting along very well, we've had at least 5-6 days over the last two weeks that have hit record highs and the volcano is playing games with us. It has sort of stopped over the last two weeks. The Kaohe Homestead is still there. Besides a small grass fire that sent ashes into our subdivision the lava flow front has basically become stagnant, with some outbreaks north of the flow front still heading slowly in a north easterly direction. They were going to do an overflight of the entire flow this afternoon, I think to check if there is surface flows up hill of the front. It may be that the tube system isn't feeding the front. If that's the case then that will be a small reprieve for the moment. Here's the link for this afternoons statement from the HVO. To see the latest information on the flow front just hit the maps link on the top left corner of the page. To recap: volcano indecisive, sister and I inconclusive, my girlfriend and I indisposed and the weather incomprehensible. Thus I'm reading my complete B. C. by Johnny Hart book collection to try to put a smile on my face. The Dookey Bird always gets me when she; I had forgotten the bird was female; is the deliverer of Thor's love notes to his beloved, whom unbeknownst to him the Dookey Bird thinks is The Fat Broad. My favorite line: "You remind him of a swamp" after a beautifully rendered Thor speech gets brutally shortened. Anyway, mahalo for reading and until next time, aloha!

dang, chicken. when it rains, it pours. and it pours hot lava and ash, evidently. if it weren't for you, i'd think living in hawaii would be all chicks in grass skirts, don ho and drinking rum out of coconuts or something.
it'll get better. keep yer beak up.

I always thought Hawaii was like that 3 part Brady Bunch show and the second season premier of Charlie's Angels. Oh, and Don Ho.

crowfan has a point. chicken, have you recently bought/been given an idol such as this one hanging around greg brady's neck? if so, you need to find a cave containing vincent price immediately. oh wait...well, at any rate, give it to someone else asap.

And stay away from those really big waves, and tarantulas in your hotel room. Also, avoid bad perms.

What about the ones you used to get in the '80s? It was less a perm than an outrageous white guy 'fro. We had one of those tikis in our front yard. It was about 4' high. My uncle used to do wood working and carved us a statue that looked pretty much like the Brady tiki. Wish I had a photo of it. What always bothered me about those Brady Hawai'i episodes, besides the obvious anachronisms (tarantula?), was that Vincent Price gets away with kidnapping and holding hostages. I never knew being nice and apologizing later let you get off scot-free. He held the Brady boys HOSTAGE in a CAVE! Book 'em Danno! Otherwise, I like watching those episodes. It's a nice fond reminder of what Oahu looked like when I was growing up in the 1970s.

when i was in high school, i told my best friend that greg died in that episode. she never saw the ending, so she didn't know what happened. she didn't believe me at first, but i went into this big thing about how much controversy it caused - there was a statement from the producers saying they wanted to show everyone that even happy families go through terrible tragedies and since the guy playing greg wanted to quit the show to pursue a real music career they decided to kill his character off. i said there was a big thing about it on 60 minutes, etc. and she believed me! i didn't tell her for the longest time that i made it up.

And Spice, that was funny. I can't believe your friend fell for that. On a side note, I'm reading "Growing Up Brady" which is Barry William's (aka Greg)autobiography.

Let's see, we started this year with a nasty lightning storm and everything seemed fine until early August when one ex-hurricane high grade tropical storm decided to visit us. Then a few days later another hurricane said hi and passed us by. A few weeks later the trade winds decided to disappear and skip out on us for almost 5 weeks. During that time Pu'u O'o sends a nice lava flow our way and it's still hanging around just above Pahoa. The trade winds finally seemed to come back to stay and cool things off about three days ago when a system develops nearby and is sending us more heavy rains and nasty lightning. We had about 6hrs straight of lightning today and it stopped a short time ago, but I hear rumblings coming in from my east again. And now? Well, Tropical Storm Ana is created over night right next door. The ocean around Hawai'i has been a little warm this year, which is normal during El Nino years. It's supposed to become a category 1 hurricane by Wednesday and is heading...you guessed it. So looks like sometime on Saturday once again we'll get a hit or a near miss. Oh the JOY!!It makes me think of that Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times. Boy has life been interesting this year.
