Let me start by saying that I've read some really good books - Lord of the Rings, The Jungle, Ender's Game- books that pretty much cover the gambit. But this does not necessarily mean they would make good movies (I'm slightly worried about the pending Enders Game flick). Look at Stephen King. I love the books 'The Stand' and 'It' yet the movies produced really deserve to be flushed and forgotten.
My decision on choosing the proper book (or books in this case) is based on three things: 1) Are the actors portraying the characters interesting enough to shell out money for? 2) Is the plot going to still function when put on celluloid? and 3) Will the FX live up to what the book/s tell you?
Well, for my choice I picked Margeret Weis & Tracy Hickman's 'The Death Gate Cycle'. Given the new monumentous success of the LOTR trilogy, the public now sees fantasy as it should be seen. Using this newly found public interest, DGC would be a most wise pick for studios to invest in. Of course few have heard of the DGC as opposed to the millions that have old copies of LOTR already. So for DGC, 'big name' actors might have to be brought in.
DGC's plot is basic, but exceptionally presented (not unlike the original Star Wars), the characters have depth and conviction, and the settings would be spectacular - thus drawing in more people that only like flicks for FX.
The only downside to DGC is that you would have to do a MINIMUM of five films to cover all seven books. Of course, you could play around with the story and put it in trilogy form, if handled properly.
Are you listening, Peter Jackson? Don't touch that over grown ape again! Pick up a DGC script and get to work!
