This is Mrs. Atari and my favorite show right now. It's a standard detective show, based on the old Sherlock Holmes archetypes (Holmes & Watson both helping and outsmarting Lestrade at every turn). But the humor and interplay between the characters is what makes it great. Unlike all of the cookie-cutter procedural shows out there, it doesn't take itself too seriously. In fact, it doesn't take itself seriously at all. There are a ton of '80s references and running gags that make for great repeat viewing, as well.
Like Columbo (which the show resembles), the special guests add another dimension of watchability. They do a great job of bringing back favorite '80s and '90s actors and giving them fun things to do. For example, this week's episode reunites a bunch of the actors from Twin Peaks for a tribute mystery. It looks awesome.

Love it too, Mr. A. The family started watching this on Netflix a couple weeks ago, and now I'm hooked too. Very funny stuff.

Last night's Twin Peaks tribute episode was one of the highlights of my television watching life. Every frame of the episode had a TP reference in it. The first shot was of a chocolate bunny on Shawn's desk. On the counter in the doctor's office was a coconut. The first lines of dialogue in the episode were about silent drape runners. There were owls that weren't what they seemed, arson at the sawmill, and the log lady. Let's see...there was The Great Northern newspaper, an email from me@underthenail.com, and Sherilyn Fenn talking about how much she likes cherries. The best moments were when Sheryl Lee (the original Laura Palmer) was pulling back the plastic on the drowned girl. I'm sure it was quite a surreal experience for the actress. And later in the episode when the priest (played by Ray Wise, who played Laura's father on TP) showed up in town with his hair suddenly white. Awesome. It's up on hulu right now. www.hulu.com/watch/197344/psych-dual-spires

The list of sidekick names for Gus is a reliable Snort Producer. I find the show to be well-written and interesting, and while I may not always stay up until 1opm to watch, my tivo makes sure I never miss an episode.

Bumping this thread because Psych aired its 100th episode tonight. It was an homage to Clue, complete with guest stars Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, and Christopher Lloyd. They even did the multiple endings gimmick that the film had in 1985.
It was a thing of beauty.
The only complaint I have is that they didn't get Michael McKean or Tim Curry. Curry has previously been a guest star, so I kept hoping his earlier character would show up.
They did a ton of reference humor, and dedicated the show to the late, great, Madeline Kahn.

Bump, again. This show is my new drug, and I just may OD on it. I'm watching episode after episode. James Roday and Dule Hill have great chemistry together, and you would think they actually had been friends for years right from the get-go. (Now, of course, they HAVE known each other for 8 seasons worth of shows).
Roday is hysterical as Shawn Spencer, I just love the dialogue in this show (and some of it is ad-libbed by Roday) and Hill is just great without saying a word, with the expressions and the physical humor. (The episode "Office Space" was a gut buster).
I WAS kind of disappointed in the first ep of Season 8 last week, it didn't really have the feel of a classic Psych episode, they didn't really have Shawn do much of anything, and I hope that was not indicative of the whole season to come. I guess I'll see tonight when the next new ep airs.
Greatest show since sliced pineapple.

I don't have high hopes for this season. Maggie Lawson will only be in a few episodes because she was shooting her terrible ABC series with James Caan. Anthony Michael Hall is the new Captain, but he's not going to be anything more than an occasional guest star. The season premiere made me wonder just how often they'll have a normal Santa Barbara episode. Here's hoping they don't limp to the finish line.

Okay, the second episode was better than the first, though still not up to snuff, and the third episode was better still - I hope it keeps going along those lines. This third ep did have it's funny moments, but still not classic Psych. And what was that supposed to be, a fever dream or something? (Edit: Yes, I know they were making fun of remakes). Now I'll have to watch the original "Cloudy with a Chance..." episode to remember how that went down. (I think the first one was better). This show seems to be suffering from the Homer Simpson Syndrome - where the main character just keeps getting progressively more stupid as the years go by. They did that with Joey on "Friends" and Kelso on "That 70's Show" and I hate when they do that. Sure, Shawn was always a big goof ball, that's a given, and that's the show, and there was stuff he didn't know, and he made mistakes and all that, but now it just seems they're getting away from the original character and just making him a big air head. Now they're making him TOO stupid, and it's just like, keep guessing and grasping at straws until you get it right, you'll hit it eventually. They're not really focusing on the whole "psych" part. (Well, fake psych, but you know what I mean). If anyone saw the extended version of the pilot, it was pointed out in the cut-for-time scene when Shawn was in the shooting range with Lassiter's original partner that Shawn could've been valedictorian, but just got bored with it all, and had all these interesting jobs just for the experience and that he could shoot a gun REALLY well. And Roday can go from goofy to serious in a heart beat and is a good actor, but I can't take this new version of Shawn all that seriously. I like the character better in the earlier seasons, I wish they would find a way to get back to that.

I have to confess that this is a favorite of mine as well. Sadly, my lack of Internet-based methods of watching TV episodes, and my lack of cable or satellite TV means that I don't really get to watch it very often.
I'm a fan of all the different "special themesongs" they have for some episodes.

Yeah, I don't know about this season. Shawn was always more of a slacker than a moron, and this season is making him stupider. I hope it rebounds, but so far this has been one of the worst seasons.

I really enjoyed the remake episode. Not because it was a great ep, but because I loved seeing the return of all of the guest stars (especially Alan Ruck or the Twin Peaks guys). I loved it when Shawn called Gus his "black Cameron" in front of Ruck.
Last night's episode, however, was a huge disappointment. Woody is almost always funny to me, but he was boring here. They had some nice subtle Fargo references, but I felt like they wasted Stormare's guest spot. I really enjoyed Anthony Michael Hall's character and his story arc, but it ended way too abruptly, which was frustrating.
Only 6 episodes to go.

They're only doing 10 episodes? Not 13? Well, that sucks. Then, again, the season so far isn't that great. I'm surprised it went down like that in just one season. I didn't see all of Season 7, but "Office Space" and "No Trout About It" were really funny, so I don't know why they would devolve that quickly. I'm watching all the eps in order on DVD and I'm watching the outtakes and listening to the commentary, and it just seems like they are a funny bunch of people and would be above all that of letting the thing go down hill. Next week's episode looks interesting, that Gus takes over, and Shawn takes a back seat - literally and figuratively. We'll see. I hope they don't screw that one up. This show makes me happy, so I hope they don't ruin it for me. P.S. - They're showing Kirsten Nelson in the credits, so I guess Chief Vick is coming back. P.P.S. - I'm up to Season 6 on the DVD's and I watched "Last Night Gus" 3 times (once with commentary). It was hilarious. (The one where it's like The Hangover, and they don't know what happened the night before - Shawn, Gus, Lassiter, Woody, and eventually it's found out, Henry. I GUESS it was like The Hangover, I never saw the movie only trailers for it, so I'm guessing it was that the characters didn't remember what happened the night before). Anyway, they need to get back to that kind of writing (though Shawn was starting to devolve at this point already). ANY anyway, it was funny.

I'm bummed. They're turning Shawn into a total loser, and I didn't realize this was the last season of the series. I certainly hope the end of the series isn't just like a wedding for Shawn and Jules. That's so boring. (And I can understand why Maggie would be with James, but why WOULD Juliette be with Shawn? They're making him too ridiculous). Urgghh. What happened to the Shawn that walks into a bank heist hostage situation and just takes right over, calling the shots? And takes over Gus's route and does it BETTER than Gus? And talks someone out of shooting him? Why'd they turn him into a big lunkhead? Come AWWWN, son.

I agree with the dumbing down of Shawn. I wonder if the writers have just run out of juice and are getting bored. It seems like Shawn is just there for comic relief at this point. Shoot, at this point, it seems like everyone is just there for comic relief.
Still, it was great to see Gus come into his own last night. I saw a rumor about a spin-off. I have no idea what they would do, but I'd watch a show about Gus and his new lady kicking butt and solving crimes.

I think the spin-off is a Lassiter spin-off. (That's what they said they wanted to do in the Season 6 DVD commentaries). Unless you heard specifically that it was about Gus.
There's no Shawn without Gus, and vice-versa, in my opinion, so personally, I don't think I'd like a spin-off about just Gus.
I watched a few more eps and finished off Season 6. I noticed that in episodes co-written by James Roday, that Shawn is a bit more competent and not just a doofus, heh. His episodes are good, he did a good job with them (and also with directing a few).
