[ i have another theory, i think i may have mentioned it before, so sorry if i'm repeating myself, but i don't think lucas EVER had a huge saga just sitting in the wings when the first star wars came out. i think he'd just conceived it as a standalone movie and when it was a huge success (the studio was apparently really scared it was gonna be a flop, for whatever reason they thought sci-fi was dead in the movies, if you can believe it), when it was a huge success he was like, "yeah, um.... i have eight more! yeah, that's the ticket." i know it starts off with "IV: A New Hope," etc., but you gotta remember Star Wars was boosting off the old serials, flash gordon and so on, and i think starting off with Episode IV was just an inside joke alluding to that, or a way to evoke the aesthetic of the old serials. You're absolutely right. The 77 version of Star Wars doesn't even say Episdoe IV, Lucas has been messing with these movies for a long time.

A strange thing to note is that there is a listing for Blu-Ray set on J-List. (I'm not going to provide a link as the site specializes in pornographic media and novelties.) In fact, considering the site's niche, I'm befuddled why this is a product here. Anyway, from the site's description ... The ultimate Star Wars collection. This 9 disc set includes all the movies from Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace to Star Wars: Episode 6 - Return of The Jedi, all in full HD quality. These are the original English versions we all saw in theaters, plus Japanese and English subtitles, PLUS three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes, an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives. One of the bonus discs includes seven stand along documentaries about Star Wars, from the 1977 Making of Star Wars, to the 2011 Star Wars Spoofs. Everything is packed together in a sleeve case that also holds a special artbooks with scenes from the Star Wars universe for your enjoyment. A full and comprehensive collection of everything Star Wars, that any self-respecting fan will want put next to his / her video of The Star Wars Holiday Special. According to scathing user reviews all over Amazon, these original theatrical releases are not being featured in this release. What the hell is the deal with these vendors?

Hmmmm Through the wonder of porn you must have tapped into an alternate universe where everything is awesome. and once again, a hearty laugh is had courtesy of ratso. i want that imaginary blu-ray box set man. i want it real bad. here's another theory: maybe we're in an alternate universe where everything is horrible. "can you imagine a world where the most exciting, fun, glorious feel-good sci-fi fantasy in a generation was made, to the wonderment and delight of millions, and then slowly, year by year, its director whittled away at its legacy by releasing a series of ever-worsening sequels and then actually defacing it with unsightly revisions, and making the original unavailable? perhaps, somewhere, such a terrifying universe exists!" that would be a horror story that would keep your children on the straight and narrow, if we didn't actually live in that world. apparently, i feel strongly about star wars. you had to be a geeky kid whose dad worked for NASA in houston when it came out to appreciate. that movie burned itself into my brain, and i ... well, you know. i have complaints. i like the fact that my too-candid confession of an almost fetishistic love for star wars, and my deep feelings of hateful betrayal courtesy of george lucas, was my thousandth post on this board.

Yeah, Lucas said it doesn't have it because he was afraid he'd confuse moviegoers in 1977. Riiiiiight. If that J-List Blu-ray set isn't a bootleg it makes me wonder why Lucas allows the Japanese version of a release to have material absent from the North American release that most fans find more desirable. Doesn't seem fair.

You know I now feel vindicated.. I have only seen the original 3 Star Wars movies. I haven't seen any of the reedited versions nor have I seen the 3 newer ones from the whole George Lucas money grab... I knew that it wasn't right from the start...

Oh thank god. Sounds like he wants to release the original version of ET.
I honestly can't stant the special edition. It just lacks the magic.

For those who are considering getting this, I had a chance to check it out. All changes aside, the prequels look stunning, the original trilogy looks...hazy. Of course, they've always looked that way due to their age, but after seeing the brilliant restoration of the James Bond series, I expected something better from another of the most popular film frinchises of all time. Yes, they look less compressed than a DVD, that's to be expected, but more effort was put into adding CGI rocks and "NOOOOOOOOOO!" than improving the picture.
I checked out the extras list in case there was something I wanted to check out, and nothing stood out. And work on the street says that I'm not missing anything by shrugging them off.
So, my at a glance analysis says that if you LOVE the prequels, pick them up. If you LOVE the originals, think twice. No matter what, keep your DVDs. The documentaries are more informative and interesting than the ones on Blu.
And remember, starting next year LucasFilm is rereleasing all the films into theaters one a year (in 3D). I expect better Blu-Rays to be released to coincide with those.
