Something no one has pointed out yet... All four films are foreign made movies. I don't think any other MST set can claim that.

Though didn't the later Gamera films have an American influence? I forgot exactly what was said in the bonus features, but didn't American studios put some money in the the films or provided American actors or something?

The Gamera set would like to have a word with you. Agreed. Though didn't the later Gamera films have an American influence? I forgot exactly what was said in the bonus features, but didn't American studios put some money in the the films or provided American actors or something? The later Gamera films had American children running around with the Japanese kids to give them more international appeal, which can be seen in Guiron and Zigra (and American kids can also be seen in the unMSTied Viras and Jiger). The kids were always dubbed in Japanese, though and redubbed for American audiences. The redub usually happened because the original performance was too terrible to use (or in some cases, like Russ Tamblyn's performance in War of the Gargantuas, the original audio wasn't available...even though Tamblyn's acting isn't very good in the movie either, so we can be thankful for that). The most prominent English performances I can think of for a Japanese monster movie I know of are Nick Adams in Godzilla vs. Monster Zero and Frankenstein Conquers the World, and Don Frye in Godzilla: Final Wars. The former was originally dubbed in Japanese but had his pretty damn good performance restored for the dub and the latter always had his lines in English no matter which version you watch. The Heisei era Godzilla films had a fair amount of dialogue in English, usually in military scenes as an international communication language, but the primary language was always Japanese. Though Korean monster flicks Reptilian and Dragon Wars were shot entirely in English for an international audience. I wouldn't reccomend checking them out, but just thought I'd throw them out there.

Well, i love this set. It's the International House of Riffing. I especially love the Fugitive Alien Movies because I think the Brains were on the top of their game with Sandy Frank releases. Samson is a fun farewell episode for Frank, and the riffing is good too. Sword and the Dragon is my favorite Russo-Finish release. While I am disappointed at no Sci-Fi or Season One I'll take this set any day of the week.

I'm actually cool with ANY episode released. There is no "bad" MST3K in my opinion. Boring movies? Maybe, but never bad in terms of the episode itself. I want to see every episode released at some point.
However, I do think that it is possible to release a bad set based on lack of variety. I recall a few Rhino volumes that were four slowly paced episodes. Thankfully, Shout has always done a great job in mixing things up and have yet to release a bland set.

The extras sound AWESOME!!! I'm really looking forward to what Sandy Frank has to say (I'm sure there are still fans out there who thinks he owns the Gamera films. haha.)

Do you think the inclusion of Snow Thrills and a Date with your Family on the next box set is any indication that It Conquered the World and Invasion USA are unlikely to be released?
Also I would like to hear from Sandy Frank just to confirm that he never had any anger towards the show. I've always had a feeling those rumors were fabricated.

Interesting that they got Sandy Frank for a special feature. I'll be looking forward to that.
I remember Kevin Murphy remarked that he never heard of bad blood between the show and Sandy Frank. He was under the impression that it was issues of money.

No one had a source or anything to that effect but it was somehow still true. forrestcrow.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mstchat&action=display&thread=18214&page=1

No one had a source or anything to that effect but it was somehow still true. forrestcrow.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mstchat&action=display&thread=18214&page=1About five or six years ago, Phantom Engineer met Kevin Murphy at like some comic book shop and he recorded most of what transpired, and he sent out discs to most of the staff and a few other members. Kevin was asked aboit what the deal with Sandy Frank was, and Kevin looked confused at the idea that he was angry at the series. His quote was pretty much "These things take money" and gives me the impression that the Sandy Frank episodes merely stopped airing because the contract expired and they didn't have the money to keep them in reruns. I still have that disc somewhere. It had a lot of good stuff on it. He was asked what movies he wanted to riff and instantly said the Star Wars prequel trilogy (this was a few years before RiffTrax) and someone brought a Servo puppet and he played with it for a while.

I think what helped fuel the "Sandy Frank hates MST3K" rumors is the fact that there's been horror stories from people who have worked with him in real life talking about what an egotistic backstabber he can be. One person saying that Sandy would, "throw his mother in front of a moving train if he knew he could make money off of it."

Great set. The Fugitive Alien episodes are pure gold. Season Six ones ain't too shabby. Look forward to the interview with Frank.
