I like different music for different reasons, but Classical music always sounds good, at any time, for any mood. So, Classical is my favorite.
Punk, and older rock/pop stuff (pop-rock would be Chicago, I guess) are also favorites of mine.

None of my favorites are up there. I do enjoy rock, but Im obessed with electronic music, industrial, DnB, trance, club, ambient, house, Dub, etc etc...
Top five: KMFDM Front Line Assembly Juno Reactor Haujobb Meat Beat Manifesto
but if I had to vote, I'd pick jazz out of the genres up there.
Lyrics are nice, but music without them can turn to mean anything depending on what mood you are in.

Why did you divide it so much? Could you not just put rock, pop and hip-hop? I chose pop because that is the one I am more familiar with. If you just had rock in general, I would have voted for rock.

That's true, I could have voted rock but classic rock to me sounds to much like the radio definition. What I consider classic is largely not the same as classic rock radio. I am sooo cool.

I divided them because I think that there’s a big difference between The Who, Jay-Z and Madonna. (If that’s what you meant by combining them all into one category under “rock”.) Phantom – In my opinion, the term classic “classic” rock doesn’t include Styx, Foreigner and a bunch of crappy songs that Don Hennly (SP?) put out in the 80’s. Classic rock for me is Hendrix, Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Zeppelin, The Beatles and so on. Now, I haven’t listened to the radio in about 4 years, but I remember having to wait about an hour to hear a good song get played on a supposedly “classic” rock station. Even then, it would be the same damn song they play by the same band every day. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band, but how many times can one person listen to Black Dog before they blow their brains out? That’s the problem with these massive corporations owning all the radio stations and having their DJ’s play the same “safe” play list over and over again. . but that’s a another topic. I voted for Classic Rock, just because that’s the music that sends me. When I started listening to music when I was a kid, I was a little head banger. The first tape I ever owned was “Metal Health” by Quiet Riot when I was in third grade. Some time in junior high I started to go backwards in time. I started listening to Aerosmith, ZZ Top, and Zeppelin. Then in high school it was all of the British invasion bands and the west coast bands of the 60’s. Hell, when I was in high school I wanted to be in the 60’s, which is pretty stupid, but that’s how much I love rock and roll. (And rock and roll will never die, just so long as there are people with the balls to play it and do original things with it.) The one category that I really regret not putting on the list is The Blues, since that’s now my second favorite musical style. I couldent think of any real good ways of combining the musical styles.

Doh! I just re-read what you wrote for the third time and it suddenly makes sense to me. Sorry, I just woke up! I still think that there’s a big difference between Classic Rock like The Rolling Stones and New Rock like Nickleback. IMO anyway. OK, now I must drink coffee.

I just mean rock, as in AC/DC to Nirvana to Sex Pistols. You know, stuff with guitars, basses and drums (and sometimes keyboards). EDIT: Like what you said. P.S.: If AC/DC is a slang term for bisexual, then the band AC/DC. . . ?

I've always liked old punk, goth, industrial, and 80's new wave. I'll admit I haven't listened to the radio for about fifteen years, because everything seems boring. I love the Beatles and the Doors and stuff like that, too, but I guess that's kinda saturated the culture. A few of my favorite things:
Bauhaus (and all offshoot groups/solo projects thereof) Nick Cave/The Birthday Party The Fall Joy Division Sisters of Mercy Siouxsie & the Banshees Das Ich The Cramps Christian Death Bad Religion Minor Threat Smiths Ministry Nosferatu Fields of the Nephilim The Shroud XTC
...and so on and so forth.

Jazz is definitely my favorite, though I listen to most styles of music on a regular basis. I don't think there's any music style I absolutely can't stand, really, as boring as that answer is.

In somewhat of a particular order:
1. 60' Euro exploitation film soundtracks. The Beat at Cinecitta series is some of the greatest collected music every. 2. 60's psycho-delic stuff/ garage--I just bought Volume Two of Rhino's Nuggest series and, despite a total lack of hits, it's some of the greatest stuff ever. I like other 60's stuff, Beatles, Byrds, Beach Boys, Love, Kinks, etc. but it's the obscure stuff I seek out these days. I like 60's music when it was mod and before the hippies turned it into alternately heavy metal a la Led Zep and soft folk a la James Taylor. 3. Leonard Cohen--a genre all to himself 4. Anything hard noisy, fast and furious. Early punk and hardcore, new wave, Pixies, Sonic Youth, some Nirvana, and some of the new garage stuff coming out is okay: Strokes, Liars, and the demented Ex-Models 5. Dance music: eletronica, trance, techno, ebm, industrial, some disco, early funk, atmosheric stuff like Air. 6. Traditional country and bluegrass. Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, etc. 7.Velvet Undergroundish stuff like VU themselves and Yo La Tengo 8. John Zorn--knows no one genre. Sometimes changes genres several times in the same song.
So I'm all over the place, I guess. If you ever need to clear out your party, I'd be happy to be your dj...

I like most styles of music. Bluegrass, jazz, classical, experimental, pop, coffeehouse pop, you name it.
But it always comes back to good old fashioned blues-based rock and roll. The Beatles, Zeppelin, CCR, John Mayer, Dada, Huey Lewis, etc.
Sprinkle in some funk and I'm a really happy man. Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Soul Coughing, etc.
Add some piano and I'm ecstatic. Ben Folds. Joe Jackson.
So my favorite genre of music would be The Beatles meets Ben Folds with James Brown's rhythm section and Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar.
