Both Joel and Mike were great when they hosted the show and both made me laugh...and isn't that what it's all about?
So yes, I'm neutral on this. ;D

I don't really have a strong opinion on this, but if I had to choose one guy it would be Joel. There was a certain warmth and comfort with Joel that couldn't be emmulated by Mike, even though he did an awesome job, as both the host and as the head writer.

So you got to meet him, huh? That's very cool. Did you have the oppurtunity to tell him that you were from the site that interviewed him?

"Pop Culture Edge", hey that's my line! LOL I LOVE Mike with all might heart. The man makes me laugh. I think he's a true comic genius and MST's consistancy can be attributted, in large part, to his presence and guidance as head writer. But I liked the way Joel talked. The way he delivered his lines. I spoke about that in my Sinbad review. Joel took a throw away line, but made me laugh my butt off just by his delivery. It's apples and oranges... but Mike couldn't have delivered an "OH WOW!" the way Joel did. Love 'em both tho. And I'm curous too, what did you say to Mike and Kevin?

I would agree with you on your point about Joel's delivery. I also think though that there are lines that are more geared to Mike as well. There was a line in The Brute Man where the angry old store owner looks at the clock because the kid that works there has apparently been gone for a long time. The camera pans slowly over to the clock, and gives the viewer a good long look at it, despite the fact that we have no idea when the kid disappeared.
Mike then says "...and by itself that doesn't establish much."
That line seemed to be handmade for Mike's type of delivery, and is still one of my favorite moments from that episode.

Forrest: I might have said it during the interview with you and Don. But hell, I'm honored to be quoted. Nice to know I wrote something memorable to folks! Unsavory: Very true, each brought something special to the table. That's something I liked about Girls Town, all those inside references -it probably helped that I was raised Catholic- and the pop culture stuff like Mike singing "GIGANTOR!"cracked me up. In fact, tho I say I probably like Joel slightly more, I have more Mike episodes in my top 15! So it's likely something about Joels personality that gets to me.

*A Newbie cautiously lurks to the surface*
I dunno....Joel was always more passive about his situation while Mike actively attempted to escape on a more regular basis....
I think that I prefer Mike Nelson's general host segments to Joel's, but I prefer the Invention Exchanges to most of Mike's host segments, and I don't have much of a preference in the theater....
I flipped a coin and it lands on the edge....

Actually to be fair, aren't we all kind of newbies? I mean, this sites only been around for like 3 days.

*Celebrates his non-newbie-ness*
It normally takes the recognition of people who've been around shorter periods of time than myself before I'm not a newbie at most places. It can take years....

Joining the Newbie parade...
As a longtime fan, I grew up with Joel. However, I'm a Mike man. Mainly because of the way he laughs at the riffing while in the theater. Something about his reaction to the 'bots' comments makes them even funnier to me. Basically, Joel's sleepiness often made me sleepy and Mike's laughing often made me laugh.
Plus, Mike did a better job at remembering his lines during the host segments.

Mike or Joel...hmmm. I guess it just depends on what mood I'm in. The first episodes I saw were the SciFi ones so naturally I prefered Mike. I was actually very hestitant at first to see a Joel episode. But then I actually liked Joel better. But as of this second I'm neutral...but I do prefer Joel's host segments (most of the time). Now my head hurts from trying to decide

Yeah Actually, it's been 2 days I believe. So yeah, we're all newbies. So don't worry. In two months from now we can call new members Newbies. HAH! The truth of the site rises to the top! "He's got some stones to be messin with me". KIDDING! You guys seem to layed back to call people newbies with any sort of mallace... thank goodness. Ya know, I think I like Mike more because, there's more toilet humor. There, I said it. Sure, Joel had fart jokes, but there were also quite a few more obscure, author and director jokes that non intellictuals, such as myself, didn't get. This didn't make the flim any less funny. Course, that's also a notch to Joel, because he could go right from obscure refrence to boob jokes in like half a second. I noticed that Joel has a more "Oh, here it comes" matter-of-factly approach while Mike has a "Holy cow! Did you see that" exciting approach. Neither of which are bad! To the sensible human, I think that complaining about the awesome quality both bring is sort of, moot. They both did an excellent job! I'da payed to see those flame wars you guys talked about though.

If I'd watched the show from the very beginning and followed it every week, I could see myself being more attached to Joel, and becoming upset about him leaving. However, I didn't get into the show until after it was completely over, so there was no need to adjust to the fact that the show had changed hosts. It was a reality of the past, and something that was easy, as a newbie, to accept.
I think that's why it's so much easier to talk about this subject without the same negative emotion that there was when the change actually took place.

Phew, I'd say I love both the same...
No, this isn't a way to avoid critizism, or a way to end my post quickly, cause believe me, I like talking...
I geuss the two were just so different in their delivery that I couldn't just decide as if it was an even comparison. Joel sends out a warm and goofy feeling, while Mike is sharp and witty. And not an annoying witty...not Shelley Long witty....if Shelley Long even is witty......what was I saying?
They both make me roll on the floor, two comic geniuses.

They were both equally good. I really can't choose. Although the better episodes seemed to be in the Joel era, that isn't Mike's fault because season 5-7 were as great as the Joel era. But my theroy on why MST3K declined (which I will post somewhere else) will sort of explain why they are both good despite Joel having better episodes.
