I always thought Joel acted more as the father to the bots, and Mike was like a friend of the bots. It's interesting to see how two people interpret something so differently. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

True. This is why the question of Mike Or Joel will never be decisively answered as the whole issue is truly based on the interpretations of the individual.
Well, not unless we can convince Mike and Joel to duel each other in real life.
I'm so sleepy....I'm sleepy when I say things like that....

<g> Glad to see my comments encouraged such debate. Regardless, I still think Joel was quite stoned, atleast in some episodes but especially in 307 Daddy-O. I have been around people that stoned before, as I have been that stoned myself. But that is neither here nor there.
I met one of the guys who worked on Joel's TV Wheel at a convention once (said he built some of the puppets) and I asked him if Joel got high or not. He gave a non-answer (I don't know him personally that much/Wasn't around a whole him a super longtime) but it was enough of a non-answer to reinforce what I suspected. But again, that is neither here nor there.
But that same guy did answer a question burning since 1001 Soultaker: Yes, Joel's gotten fat. My guess? He had to eat his way to the bottom of that box of Hamdingers.

Mike and Joel. Saying which one i like better is like saying which of my dogs i like better. I liked them both for different reasons, and no matter who hosts, the episodes always make me laugh.

They're both good but I'd have to edge it out to Mike.
Joel was just missing this wiseass feel that I get from Kevin, Trace, Bill, and Mike. I think Joel is funny but in a different way, I just thought Mike fit in the Theater seats better.
I also thought Mike's relation with the robots was funnier. Joel had a father/son thing going on, while the robots had no connection with Mike. He was just the new boy.

I think this point has been raised but it makes alot of difference when you started watching. Many board members are fairly young and started with the Sci Fi's. So in effect Joel seems like the new guy. I know some members started with Joel shows when they were kids, I may be one of the few here who begain in the early days as an adult, but that being said there is a lot I prefer about Mike.

Interesting to see how this argument has evolved.
Originally, so I heard/read, there was a huge, epic Flamewar of '93 over this.
Now it seems at least a good portion, if not the majority, of MiSTies prefer Mike over Joel.

Hmm, some entirely new and intelligent perspectives, since I was here last. Like that I've only been watching the show for less than a year. Those who had seen it from the start might have prefered Joel because they "grew up" with him. But refreshing to see so many Mike fans. When I used to post on the Sci-Fi board, I would see WAY more Joel fans. Still, not to pick favorites but Mike makes me laugh more, and cheers me up more on a bad day.

The Joel-era eps were definitely funny, but in a different way. Mike's were totally funny because he laughed alot more, and it seems that the riffs hit alot harder. The sarcasm shows more.

Both are GREAT. Joel is more of a father figure- which is really funny, especially when he scolds them for getting dirty....
Mike is more like the big brother.
They are both genius. There is no such thing as an unfunny MST epsiode.

I by far prefer Joel up to and including 512-Mithell. Although from 513- The Brain That Wouldn't Die and on I much prefer MIke. I can't explain it, it's just the way it is.

Funny, but as I've mentioned, I think the opposite. Mike is the father, Joel, the brother. Maybe it's because Mike looks a bit older (and less stoned).

I always looked at Mike as the Weird Uncle type.

Even though I started watching during the Joel years, and even though I love Joel with all my heart, I'm gonna have to give the edge to Mike. I guess I like him better because he has more of a sardonic, wise-ass quality that more closely parallels my own rather sarcastic and mean-spirited sense of humor. Mike is just so funny, in the host segments and the theater segments -- even as I type this I am laughing at Mike's dressing-down of Servo for installing all those railings... "Ha ha, oh really... WHY?!?!" His comic timing is impeccable, plus, I must say, he's pretty damn cute.
As for the father/brother thing, I always thought Joel was more fatherly toward the 'bots, being their creator and all. The 'bots didn't seem so willing to be mean to Joel as they later were to Mike, so to me, Mike seemed to want to be in control, like an older brother or uncle, but just ended up getting the crap kicked out of him anyway by the unruly "kids."
