I guess I was trying to avoid reigniting the flames of ten years ago, but I can see that won't happen (barring some spammer coming in to start some s__t).
You gotta hand it to Mike: he went from "typist" to "Head Writer" in just one season. And I think it really is about that "pop culture edge" that Forrest and MightyJack (or whoever said it first) mentioned. Plus, his musical talent on the show can't be overlooked.
And I say that, when we're not considered newbies anymore, we cut the NEW newbies who are making a genuine effort some slack if they mess up or something.

I started watching the show sometime in the early 90s and when Joel left I was worried if it could go on, but I never had any problem with Mike. I think there was no one on the planet more qualified to take over. Actually I had a harder time adjusting to Bill Corbett's Crow. I got over that also. In the long run I think the cast changes kept the show fresh. Maybe, I guess.

I remember the first time I heard Josh's Servo voice in The Crawling Hand. I was prepared for it to be different, but it was still a tad startling.
I think that I'll jump off of my previous posts for neutrality. I'm in a "Mike" mood at the moment. If I ignore the riffing and the host segments entirely (where the two are practically equal), I've always preferred Mike's singing styles to Joel's.
Not that I can imagine my life without "Patrick Swayze Christmas," "Clowns In The Sky" or "The Waffles Song," mind you. Mike could just pull out better harmonies on occasion.

Joel is pretty funny, as he seemed to have a very quiet, smooth style of talking. He wouldn't get mad, and would rarely laugh. The jokes of his era didn't really rip the movie like the Mike era did.
Mike, however, is wayyy funnier. He seemed to give free reign to the bots' jokes. They could say whatever. Mike seemed to constantly laugh at the funny jokes (Example: Escape 2000. Crow: "Sure I did lady, oh..." (mike laughs REALLY hard)). That seemed to make the (already funny) jokes a ton funnier than with Joel.

Yeah, I'm a big Mike fan too. Mostly because I started watching the show during the Mike Era and bc I've seen more Mike episodes. I like Joel too, but Mike is the best!

Really it's not fair to pick favorites. Here's what I've noticed. I seem to be in the minority for thinking this. It's that I prefer the episodes that Mike is in. And it's not just his riffs. The bot's riffs also seem funnier. But Joel is so much wackier in the skits. So the ideal show would be Joel in the skit, Mike in the theater. Both guys are adorable. Mike, in my opinion, is da yummier one !

Ya know, I think I like Mike more because, there's more toilet humor. There, I said it. Sure, Joel had fart jokes, but there were also quite a few more obscure, author and director jokes that non intellictuals, such as myself, didn't get. . Never thought about it that way, but I will tend to agree.

Although come to think of it, I don't see myself enjoying Mike in Manos or Joel in Beginning Of The End. I don't know how I'd react to either change occurring.

I wonder how much of the characters of Mike and Joel were scripted VS being part of the "actor"'s natural attitude. Meaning, I wonder if Mike's Mike was scripted to be such a departure from Joel's Joel, or if that's just how it was.
Me personally? Mike rocks, but Joel kicks ass. Mike tended not to fare too well in Host Seguments (overall, including a lot of the lackluster Sci-Fi stuff) where as Joel turned poopie (read: the KTMA and Season 1) into Shinola.
Plus I'm of the camp who (still!) thinks Joel was high (read: stoned) while he did his thing, and that greatly amuses me. For evidence I cite his constant line blowing (listen to the last bit of the Gamera song for one big example) and in 307 Daddy-O he was waaaaaay beyond sleepy. That man was stoned I tell you!

I guess I'm more of a Mike guy also. I would agree that the biggest difference between the two is how each delivers their lines.

I suspect RevRaven was stoned when he wrote that post. Just a hunch.

Joel wasn't stoned, he was just a little weird (in a good way!). Believe what you want, he's still a genius.

We will never know if Joel was stoned or not. One of the great Mysteries of Science Theater. Maybe I'm not the best judge of stoned or not stonedness. But I don't think that his humor would flow so nicely if his brain wasn't fully functioning. As an actor, he has a unique ability to fool us into believing he could be actually stoned. And it may sound odd, but Mike seems to act in a sort of fatherly way toward the bots, whereas Joel, acts like one of the kids. And most kids indulge in the green stuff more than their parents.

I don't know which of the two that I'd say was more "fatherly" to the robots, but Joel was definitely more Uvuncular.
Um, assuming that I'm using Uvuncular correctly, that is....uncle-like, right?
It also seemed like the robots were more willing to pull mean pranks on Mike. Sure Joel had his share of abuse from the bots, but Mike's been bound and gagged in multiple occasions, had a flamethrower go off in his face, had all of his money swindled during the Renfest, had Crow planning on killing him just as soon as he learned what type of pyjamas he wore,....a tad more hostility in that relationship, I think.
