Let's see....I'm going to suggest Roseanne as a decent sitcom.
Now then, I'm not going to suggest that it's really enjoyable to watch (although some episodes are nice), but it had some merit. I mean, here was a sitcom where people would actually *take offense* to the lightning-fast witty put-downs that the characters would come up with. Most sitcoms wouldn't let the characters show that kind of emotion.
That plus the theme song was done in a Blues style. That automatically earns it some points.

Afgncaap5, you think American shows are GOOD?! *Gasp!* To me, there isn't really any good American sitcoms out there, let alone shows. There is a few good ones here and there (LIKE THIS ONE), but most, no matter how popular, ARE just bad. I really hate 95% of sitcoms because the formula seems so regurgitated for most of them. There is the laugh track, the obvious jokes, the obvious reactions. . .Yeah. I am amazed by how people suck this "hiliarity" in. They are literally "situation comedies." For example. . . Wife: Aw, Jim, you left the turkey at the strip club again? Jim: Yes, dear, now get down like that mexican girl! Umm. . . That's a MADTV take on a sitcom, and I like MADTV. But you know what I'm saying. The British verison of that cancled show was probably much better than the American one. But some sitcoms are probably good, though. I just don't watch 'em. List them and I will decide. . . MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

A few American sitcoms from the past that I liked. MASH Taxi WKRP In Cincinnati Cheers 3rd Rock From The Sun A of course The Simpsons. And as a guilty pleasure I do like That 70's Show, but I think it's about lived out it's usefulness.

As long as people hate a film and are willing to comment on it, there will always be a place for MST3K.

I guess I'm the dumb one. Let me list all the sitcoms I like:
Family Guy Simpsons (middle years) Fawlty Towers MASH (first three years) Cheers (before Shelly Long left) All in the Family (before the Meathead left) Happy Days (before Chaci came) Beavis and Butthead (sitcom?) Dick Van Dyke Married...with Children (first couple of seasons) South Park (first two seasons) Taxi Newsradio (before Phil Hartman left) I Love Lucy Honeymooners Mary Tyler Moore Barney Miller The Bob Newhart Show
Now there is not one good first run TV show on. In fact all the sitcoms seem to be generic copies of each other.

But you know what I'm saying. The British verison of that cancled show was probably much better than the American one. But some sitcoms are probably good, though. I just don't watch 'em. List them and I will decide. . . MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Now now, don't take what I said out of context. I don't think "American shows" are good. But there are many "shows made in America" that I consider to be genius. Like one satirical drama called "Thalionthal The Socially Inept", it's this hilarious short series about the sad case of the middle/high school social structure. The main character observes, occasionally participates, and qualifies so many different aspects of the school experience. While most of the stuff examined gets a hilarious tongue lashing through the main characters internal monologues, accompanied by the main character's occasional imaginary struggles as "Thalionthal" (a character that was supposedly created to be some type of mage character in the main character's RPG), it gives an incredibly insightful and fulfilling view of the culture that many children and young adults are growing up in. Now, you'll note that you probably won't find this on any major networks. Then you'll note that you probably can't find it on any Cable channels at the moment. Then you might notice that not even the great IMDb.com has a listing for it. The reasoning for this is that the show 1) was pretty much feared by the people who could have had the power to put it on, and 2) the creator's realized that their show couldn't potentially hold the attention span of its target audience for even a full season, so the show became a mini-series before anyone was allowed to see any of it. Now then, *that's* the type of TV show that I was talking about when I stepped up to defend pop culture. *Not* the idiotic claptrap that gets tossed onto the airwaves just to rot away at people's brains. And because I'm one of the only people who ever finds shows like these, I'm logically always left looking like an idiot when I can't point to "well known" examples of American comedy that easily competes with British comedy.

I think that this thread would go better if we all got over the fear of sounding like proles just because some stupid sitcom made us laugh once or twice.
Laughing is good.
Unless you are watching Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond...or Will & Grace...or...Dharma and Greg or Sex in the City...etc etc etc...if you enjoy dirge like this you should be forcibly sterilized.
I kid. Well...kinda.

I've never really watched any of those except for Friends a few times. And for the majority of the time, Friends lacked a little something.
However, I must admit enjoying the "I Ross take thee Rachel" thing. It was legitimate comedy, and caught me entirely off guard.
But most of the rest of what I've seen from Friends hasn't been nearly that good.

I never really watched Friends, either. I do not really find pure, non-cynical enterainment in the few sitcoms I have watched. Which are mostly black sitcoms on UPN. But I guess the rant of mine above refers to new sitcoms. And, Afgncaap5, I understand what you mean.
