As sad as it sounds, I don't think those who control the TV entertainment Zeitgiest feel MST3K has a place in it. MST3K stood for things that are fading away: family, social satire, intelligent writing, and self-moderated use of sexuality and profanity.
This has become a world where TV is a wasteland of mean-spirited, reality-obsessed, over the top sex and violent nightmare of terrible writing and catering to the lowest common denominator.
There was always a sense of deep friendship on MST and when you watched the show, you were drawn in and became one of them. You were a pal in the theatre riffing away with J or M & the bots.
There was another thread regarding letters; this was another element that showed great reverence to the viewers and proved they were always aware of the young audience- an audience they showed great respect for.
This was a family show in the best sense of the word. Fun for the kiddies and tasty brain food for the adults.
MST3K never was snobby in its quality, but it was always written on the HIGH ROAD. It made great, piercing social commentary and never forgot to have silly fun as well. It reveled in imagination and always had a real sense of human compassion underlying it. Perhaps this was because the show was not controlled by Hollywood?
In any event, Hollywood could learn much from Joel et al. TV could use an innoculation against the mean spirit that has posssed its creators.
It proved that people were and ARE hungry for SMART comedy.
Anyway, nuff said. Think about it won't you?
Thank you.
Push the button, Frank....

Wow,that was a very interesting topic.I think you hit the nail right on the head,MST3K could apeal to anyone.Heck, you could even say some older people might enjoy the movies they riff on! I too hope one day another television series that funny and that smart can air on television,... Or we could pay the former cast millions of dollars to get them to do it again, either way it works.

Or we could pay the former cast millions of dollars to get them to do it again, either way it works. The great thing was, when you do something you love, you don't do it for the money! If MST has been done in Hollywood, they may have been spoiled too fast and the show may have suffered. I would be against bringing the show back for millions of dollars. It would not be the same. Lets just keep watching the 10 years of classic shows!

You are so right. It's too smart for the regular American. It will always have to be a cult show. Not enough people will ever get it. Too bad.

MST never would have survived on netwrk TV. It never got network size ratings. I like it as a somewhat exclusive club. Not everybody gets it and as a snob that's fine with me.

I also agree that MST3K is too smart for most average Americans especially in this day and age when most of America is tuning in to see hackneyed reality shows

I don't know of ANY show that I can watch over and over again, and still find fresh humor in a particular episode EVERY TIME. It's also funny that I can watch the show and laugh my butt off, yet most other people will watch it with me and just scratch their heads, and insult me instead since they don't get it.
The biggest problem with the world today is that the media is dumbing down the public. It's been said many times before me in this thread already (i.e. reality shows), but still the problem still remains. I don't know if this quote from a song totally applies, but it still has some merit in this discussion, I believe:
"They don't have to think to survive, so nobody listens." - Bad Religion, in the song "Nobody Listens"

There are a few other shows I can watch over and still laugh, SCTV, Fawlty Towers The Simpsons and a few others but the list is short. MST will last.

I agree. The problem with most Americans is they dont like to use there brain.Lack of imagination is another problem. Another example, the classic science fiction series "The Prisoner" was one of the best written shows Ive ever seen. But is it on TV?Noooooooooo!

Yes indeed, to all of you. I like just about anything "cult", (Including sandwiches!) So a cult TV show was perfect for me. I really don't watch television unless it's a show I really like. And also. . .
[glow=red,2,300]REALITY SHOWS AND 95% OF SITCOMS SUCK!!!!!! (Squshes with boot).[/glow]

"The Prisoner" was pretty cool. It used to be on PBS but not for a long time.

Yeah, Fawlty Towers, Simpsons, and Red Dwarf are also really funny shows, but they don't age as well as mst3k. I mean, fawlty towers and the simpsons don't have 700 jokes per episode. Now THAT is impressive.

I can't think of a reality show that I ever liked and yet there all in the top of the ratings. Same thing with sitcoms which at one point were all pretty good, now the market has been oversaturated with them, not one good one left. These two alone take up about 50 hours of primetime TV for the rest of time while MST3K is allowed 2 hours every Saturday for the rest of this month! Man this is depressing, I think it's time to watch Mitchell again.
