Hmm..... quite a lot of information you put down. Thanks for everything. From what I read, it sounds like the short summary is "Susan is more comfortable with licensing her movies as long as she gets her pay at the end of the day."

That's sad that The Simpsons would need permission to parody something. I doubt they had to phone up the Kubrick estate in order to lampoon A Clockwork Orange for this year's Halloween show.

What can I say, another steller set! Nice to finally see a Sony-owned film. Leaving Paramount and Lions Gate as the next big ones to crack (which, at this point, I have complete faith Shout Factory will). Hey, Travis. Is it possible that Lions Gate's rights to the Sam Arkhoff titles, Viking Women, War of The Colossal Beast, She-Creature, Teenage Caveman, etc., might have already expired? I read that Lions Gate has lost the rights to the ITC/ITV Entertainment library. One ITC/ITV film that Lions Gate distributed on DVD, Capricorn One, is being released on Blu-ray by Shout Factory early next year. Also, Lions Gate lost the rights to the Republic Pictures library, which includes Girls Town & Fire Maidens of Outer Space, to Paramount recently. It's totally possible, the DVDs look like they're going out of print on Amazon (though I'd take that with a grain of salt). I could see Shout! picking up the Arkoff titles eventually for some kind of BluRay release, which would hopefully pave way for inclusion on an MST set. Wouldnt that be great if Shout picked up those Season 3 MST3K titles that have expired from Lionsgate ?? Lionsgate also has a lot of horror titles that horror fans are dying for blu ray releases for.. Yeah, LionsGate has a habit of buying huge film libraries and then just sitting on them.

I'm gonna be straight up honest - maybe I could be wrong and we could end up getting a huge surprise in the future, but just their name gives me the vibe that "No, we won't allow the MST3K versions." is their attitude. Could just be me, though. *shrug*

I can't help but wonder if Sony was motivated to license Marooned, and presumably, Teenage Crimewave and 12 to the Moon, in part due to the terrible year they had at the box office last year.
Speaking of Sony Picture bad troubles, they were recently hacked, with all sorts of sensitive materials leaked, as you may have heard.
I wonder if the licensing agreements between Sony Pictures and Shout Factory for the MST3k DVD releases are to be found among the documents that have been leaked to the internet. If so, I wonder what the financial figures between the two parties amounted to.

The rumor is that those hackers have multiple terabytes of data, so it seems likely that the licensing deals will be laid bare.

The rumor is that those hackers have multiple terabytes of data, so it seems likely that the licensing deals will be laid bare. It would be interesting to see the kind of legal wording and language in the licensing agreements Shout Factory uses for the MST3k releases. I remember Shout Factory producer Jordan Fields saying they don't discuss the budgets of the MST3k DVD releases, particularly how much they've paid to license the movies for the box sets. I would imagine they don't want other movie rights holders finding out what they've paid to license titles for the MST3k releases. If they did know, many of them would want even more money for licensing for the MST3k releases. Jordan Fields only said that they always pay them money up front, with the agreement saying they would share profits with the film's license holders once they've broke even on the MST3k DVD releases.

Worried that the leak might cause trouble for future releases, somehow. It's certainly putting a damper in Sony's bottom line and productivity. Then again, maybe they'd be more willing to license the films to get cash in this sort of situation.

Then again, maybe they'd be more willing to license the films to get cash in this sort of situation. Speaking of Sony Pictures and all things MST3k-related in connection with these hackers, I wonder if the licensing agreements between RiffTrax and Sony have been leaked. RiffTrax licensed Starship Troopers, Godzilla, and Anaconda for their Kickstarter-backed RiffTrax Live shows these last couple of years. Also, they've licensed other properties, like the 1949 Batman & Robin serial shorts, among other VOD releases. RiffTrax raised more than $260,000 with each Kickstarter project. That's nearly $530,000 combined. Remember how they needed to raise at least $100,000 to riff Godzilla? Now I know that about 10% of funds raised in KickStarter projects goes to Kickstarter, Amazon credit card payments. When you add the cost of manufacturing reward materials and shipping fulfillments, RiffTrax only got about 75% of the funds raised for their crowdfunded projects. I wonder how much Sony charged to license those films individually. RiffTrax must still have quite a few of those funds left over.

This is bad news for the Arkoff Estate episodes. Bad News How do you figure? Remake Rights aren't the same as Home Video and the article does mention MST3K. It would be great publicity for these upcoming films to have the MST versions released or the non-MST versoins re-released.

I've noticed that the rights holders for the remaining episodes almost break down into 4 roughly equal, well-defined groups. With some exceptions, this breakdown roughly corresponds to their likelihood:
Group 1: Rights holders that have obvious issues in getting rights (7): Toho (213), Susan Hart (309, 311, 807, 809), New Horizons (405, 703)
Group 2: Large rights holders Shout! hasn't made a deal with yet (for MST3K) (13): Paramount (416, 904, 906, 1013), Lions Gate (403, 601), Arkoff Estate (307, 313, 315, 317, 319, 806, 808)
Group 3: Small rights holders Shout! hasn't made a deal with yet and Public Domain (8): Dark Sky (817, 819) Woolner Brothers (420), Uncertain (913), Probable Public Domain (602, 605, 618, 1007)
Group 4: Rights holders Shout! has made a deal with previously (10): MGM (418, possibly 623, 704, 705), Sony (522, 524), Universal (814, 815), CBS (305) Corinth (201)
At this point, any episode showing up from groups 1 or 2 would mean either a major coup or a good chunk of newly available episodes. Group 3 can be half-expected titles or one-offs that still might be unexpected, while group 4 are mostly anticipated, likely episodes.

Group 3 can be half-expected titles or one-offs that still might be unexpected, while group 4 are mostly anticipated, likely episodes. I noticed that Sony sub-licensed Toho's "Mothra" to Mill Creek for a 4 film budget DVD release. Kind of risky for Sony and Mill Creek to do that, given how Toho is very watchful and stingy with that kind of licensing. I doubt this will mean we will ever get Godzilla vs. Sea Monster or a re-release of Godzilla vs. Megalon. www.amazon.com/Sci-Fi-Creature-Classics-4-Movie-Set/dp/B00HFWETZ8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1422217050&sr=8-2&keywords=giant+claw+dvd 418: Attack of the Eye Creatures. Susan Hart claims to own it. She legitimately owns Invasion of the Saucer Men, which Eye Creatures was a remake of. Therefore, Eye Creatures is a derivative work under copyright law, so she may jointly own it with MGM. The eventual split of those titles between the Nicholson and Arkhoff estates was the result of American International Pictures being incorporated as a limited partnership between Jim Nicholson and Sam Arkhoff during their production, hence why all the other AIP titles are owned by MGM. 913: Quest of the Delta Knights was distributed on home video by Hemdale Entertainment. The home entertainment for their other titles, Like "The Terminator", are now owned by MGM. Perhaps Delta Knights is owned by MGM now? 420: Human Duplicators. It's possible that VCI Entertainment legitimately owns that film. If you go online, you'll see they handle DVD distribution of other Wooler Bros. copyrighted films from that time. 601: Girls Town. Lions Gate's rights to that film and the Republic Pictures film library have expired and now reside with Paramount. Paramount has mainly licensed those Republic films to Olive Films lately. Also, I purchased a Ballyhoo Motion Pictures Holiday bundle on eBay last year. It included movie art promo buttons from She Creature, War of the Colossal Beast, I was A Teenage Werewolf, It Conquered the World, Danger: Diabolik, and Escape 2000, all episodes that haven't been released. There were promotional buttons with artwork from Attack of the Giant Leeches, Indestructabe Man, and This Island Earth, all of which did get released in their MST3k form. I think those movie buttons are possible indicators that the Arkhoff and Nicholson episodes will get released. That goes for Diabolik from Paramount and Escape 2000. Also, awhile ago, MST3k.com the official Best Brains-run website, featured clips from the It Conquered the World on the homepage Riff-of-the-Day. I know from talking to MST3k Info Club poobah Barb Tebben years ago that they all know Susan Hart is very litigious and protective of the AIP films she owns, due to the Rhino MST3k Amazing Colossal Man VHS fiasco. They wouldn't upload those clips if they feared legal action, given her record. The news of those Arkhoff-owned titles being remade is all bad. I remember how Hobgoblins director Rick Sloane used Hobgoblins appearance on MST3k to make a sequel. He had previously licensed Hobgobins to Rhino for MST3k Volume 8. Remember how The Asylum allowed RiffTrax to riff Sharknado live theatrically back in July for a live show just prior to Sharknado 2's TV debut? I think the Arkhoff estate might think it would be good publicity for to license Shout the rights to release their films in their MST3k form, given I think Lions Gate's rights might have expired by now, given they're out-of-print. I also think Roger Corman may have changed his mind on Deathstalker 3 and Time Walker. Deathstalker 3 was featured on a Ballyhoo Pictures online poll asking fans which unreleased episode should get a documentary DVD extra. Also on the list of options was The Painted Hills and Radar Secret Service, which have or are getting released. Daniel Griffin even showed the Deathstalker 3 episode as a double feature with The Magic Sword at DragonCon last year, according to my friend who attended. Any one else have any thoughts to add?

Sony has all American rights to the English version original Mothra film period due to the original license agreement from the 1960s. They can sublicense that to whoever they want and Toho would have very little say about it. Mill Creek's release has no Japanese version, which is the version of that particular film Toho would have claim to.
