At least their not as bad as Warner Bros. For the longest time all WB DVDs were released in cardboard boxes, with VHS quailty, and NO special features except perhaps a theatrical trailer. True, but at least my Matrix DVD didn't fall out of the damn case every time I opened it.

Stop loving Rhino just to love them. You were against sending them hate mail for the Merlin disk, you said it would cause Rhino to perhaps not make any new releases. It did the damn opposite. Rhino wants MONEY. That's all the want. They throw in the extra Manos disk because they can get a few extra bucks. They are re-doing the next set for a better transfer because we bitched at them, not because they are cautious. It's not Rhino I care about, it's MST3K, and given the situation not "loving" Rhino could hurt my favorite series' life on home video. It's still unclear whether the darkness issue of Merlin was anybody's fault, the fault of the master tape, or whatever. They're not really getting extra bucks for Manos, because the set is basically the same as a single disc - in fact, it's cheaper depending where you shop. So stop hating Rhino just because you want someone to blame. I'm not saying I wasn't pissed at Manos being re-released, but there seems to be hope that it was a one time deal. That's all I'm getting at. Sure Rhino wants money; every company does. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they're on a personal vendetta against you. I really don't think any of our complaints really made a difference about anything. Maybe the tape Rhino received was really that bad...or maybe they're maliciously trying to screw everybody as you believe (they haven't crossed the line for me yet). And whether or not we like it, their marketing scheme for the Essentials makes sense, it was just stupid of them to use an already released episode as part of the package based on the votes of a five-year-old poll. That was retarded, but not evil. It seems to me that Rhino is beyond an annoyance for you; it's some sort of destructive, genocidal force or something. Let's wait until they REALLY screw us over before we get into that territory.

But man was the work they did on the "North By Northwest" disc was incredible. For a film that old, the quality of the print is pristine, probably the best I've ever seen for a classic (But I do wish they would have used a Hitchcock historian for the commentary track) I see that they've re-packaged "Enter the Dragon", I wonder if the picture quality is noticibly better than the previous DVD release (which I own)? Anyway, sorry for going off topic here.

I'm mixed on Rhino. I'm glad they are getting MST out there, I'm always happy when I see a release. It's like Christmas, waiting to see what we'll get.
BUT - I'm jealous when I see other shows like "Sledge Hammer" and "SCTV" get such attention to detail. The extras, the packaging, the work they did to make the discs the best quality they can. I want MST to get that kind of love.
But, Rhino's not the only one's who have dropped the ball. I know you don't agree, but "M*A*S*H" is considered by many one of the greatest shows to air on TV and the cast and creators are still alive. Why no interviews or commentary? Why does a cult show like "Hammer" get these extra's but a classic earns bare bones treatment?
So I'm often mistified and confussed by many of the DVD makers out there. Rhino's just another who sometimes contributes to the madness.
I don't hate them really, they just disappointment me in many ways.

Also Rhino is ripping off MSTies, they could put 12 episodes in one box set if they put 2 episodes per disc and made it a six disc set. Assuming Rhino doesn't put any extra features and uses one side of the disc. Hell if they did 2 sided discs, they could have an entire SEASON of episodes in one box set. The biggest seasons if the wanted. But of course you make more money if you put 6 box sets out with the same episodes.
Also, do i even have to find the PD list? It's pretty well established that list is quite HUGE!

Despite the mistakes that Rhino has made in the past, I am very satisfied that they have been supporting MST3K for nearly a decade. I am always very excited to see more releases of MST3K. However, I wouldn't mind if a great company like Shout! Factory obtained the rights to MST3K eventually, since a great show, like MST3K, deserves more special features.
Although I have my doubts, it seems that Rhino might have seen the light when they delayed Vol. 6, due to all the complaints of Merlin's Mystical Shop of Wonders. So hopefully, Rhino will get with the program on their future releases.
Also, I personally believe that MST3K:The Essentials was a one-time deal. And if that's true, there will probably be no more double-dipping.

I don't think we'll ever see MST3K season sets, because ignoring the PD movies, many of the rest have completely different companies they have to go talk to when licensing shows.
Licensing something Alf or Sledgehammer basically means you talk to one lot of people once.

They will have no way to make their double dipping legal to us MiSTies. Uh, they can "legally" double-dip regardless of what a poll says. Even if we did a second poll doesn't mean they would have listened. Everyone has seen the public domain list. Rhino is lazy. They could put two episodes to a disk. They put one to a disk so they could get more money. How is putting one episode on a disc cheap? If they'd put more than one on a disc then it would cost them less to press. Besides, putting only one episode does increase bitrate. I've also heard that they don't even go for the maximum quality on an episode that they could easily obtain. I've heard a lot of things. Mind sharing your source? I dislike Rhino because of their imcompetance. Can't really disagree with you there. They've done some pretty annoying things in the past. I just think that trying to destroy the show's future isn't the way to solve the problem. And again, I don't think they've done anything beyond redemption just yet. And I guarentee you if we didn't send that hate mail that you protested against, the next set would include a bad transfer. Thanks for the guarantee, but it hasn't really swayed my opinion.

Guys, stop totally ripping Rhino apart. I know this isn't what you wanted, but still, I'm impressed with Rhino's offerings. I mean, so far, this is not much of a double dip. Maybe we can also petition for SCCTM to be released with Collection 7, when it comes out. Keep it up and Rhino won't release any more MST3K eps! They can't please everyone.
The mere fact that Rhino can release any of these at all is a miracle. Don't take it for granted, guys (and gals).

So we should just be Rhino's bitches and not complain? We should take dark transfers, paying for things we already own and getting ripped off? Really, Rhino doesn't seem to have a grip on what exactly MST3K is and what they could do with it. Have you seen the PD List? The key problems with Rhino are as follows 1) Picture Quality- How the flapjacks can you defend Rhino's releasing Merlin with that shitty dark transfer? You say we shouldn't complain or else Rhino won't release anymore episodes on DVD, in this case, I would rather have a VHS copy (which I do have the first 30 minutes of) than the crappy murky “professional” DVD. I still think they should have recalled the batch and tried to get a better quality. 2) Lack of Extras- They could have added the MST Hour version for no extra cost. How hard would that have been? Everything on the PD list you can release the uncut version of for no cost. That’s a lot really interesting extras. 3) Episode Choosing- I refer again to the PD list. They picked Hellcats over a episode like Santa Claus? To do that is not knowing your product as simply as the casual fans do. 4) Releasing Methods- They could release at least 24 episodes per box set. If you had a six disc box set, had two sides and had two episodes per side. This is assuming that they didn’t put any uncut movies on the disc, and if they did that’s still 12 episodes. And don’t say it would ruin the transfer because Eegah has the episode and the uncut version on the same side and the transfer was fine (THAT TIME!). With a show like MST3K, where each episode is two hours, trying to release every episode possible in a box set should really be done and they wouldn’t run out of choices quickly (if you look at the PD list) 5) Simpleton Mixups- THE MISSING STING FROM 518 is a big example. But, they have done this less recently. But damn did they do it a lot during the early going the DVD's. Joel's face was on Mike episodes, the wrong theme songs for the wrong eras were playing. Wrong episode numbers. They did that a lot until they started releasing episodes in DVD collections. It’s simply moronic for the distributors of a DVD not to know which episode they are distributing. It’s just INSANELY STUPID not to know what theme song or who to put on the cover of you DVD. Good god, all you have to do is WATCH THE DAMN EPISODE YOUR DISTRIBUTING to find out and then check. How hard is that? Rhino simply doesn’t know it’s product and it’s not that hard either. Fans like us know this much how come one person in a corporation like that can’t? I think the problem is when they originally signed a contract with BBI it was a different time and market. It was just going to be VHS releases and VHS tapes are different from DVD but now the market is different and they didn’t plan DVDs and MST3K and they just sort of patched the releases together.

Not true. Barry Lyndon is 183 minutes long, all fit on one disk. And the quality is even sharper than anything Rhino has given us. Also, my Matrix DVD has a top quality transfer with a few hours of extras on it, plus theatrical trailers. My top quality "ALiens" DVD has both the regular version of the film and the director's cut on one disk, and it still has a few extras. Rhino could easily fit 2, 3 or even 4 episodes on a disk and we'd still get the same quality. They put one per disk to make the set bigger, thus, more money for them. Same thing as the Extended Lord of the Ring sets. THey could easily fit the whole film on one disk, and the two disks of special features they could easily fit them on one disk as well. They pretend they can't so they can make it a four disk set instead of a two disk set (like the original releases). So people say: "Wow, 4 disks, this can only be God!" Don't forget, Rhino HAS done it and it was fine. In fact Eegah even had a special program on it where you can swich from the episode to uncut portions of the film.

Right. Actually, they could have up to 8 episodes per disk, were it to be a double disk. 4 eps on one side, 4 on the other. God damn you Rhino you %$^&%#&^#&*^$$@%^&$*(&)%$#&*^&*%(*$%^*%^*! Of course if they actually put extras and poopie that's probably only 4 episodes per disc but still better than what we got. Poopie (I'm not swearing I'm talking about the Poopie reel) and some alternate takes from a few episodes thats it.
