OK, while I've been a MSTie for over a decade now I'm somewhat new to these online MST communities. Why does everyone hate Rhino so much?

There were a number of mistakes (putting out episodes they clearly didn't have the rights to like Godzilla) and poor quality releases (Killer Shrews getting cut, Merlin's poor picture). I thought they were decent and supported a long finished show with frequent releases and most are perfectly good. There is a consensus that they didn't give a crap though and some of the decisions would appear to support the argument.

A fair question. Others know lots more than I could remember. Maybe some links?

That's why I'm wondering if we can start to get broadcast copies of Rhino episodes, as I know that Skyroniter has a much better copy than that DVD that Rhino crapped out. We don't trade discs that are on the market until they're out of print. If Merlin goes OOP soon, then there won't be a problem.

No, I know that, but I was saying that if Rhino loses the rights to distribute the episodes, then for a short while, every episode is out of print.

Just got the following response from Dr. Rhino regarding the single disc release: “Dear David, A single disc of The Giant Gila Monster is scheduled for a 2/5/08 release, exclusively at www.rhino.com. Dr. Rhino” Dave Thank God. I love that episode. I hope this is good news. Shout has shown with SCTV and Heathcliff that they will ignore a product if it underperforms. MST should continue to sell well, but if it's costing them a lot of money to get movie rights (like the music rights on SCTV)... I hope its good news, and remain hopeful, but you never know. What I really hope they have over Rhino is listening to what episodes fans actually favor (if they produce them seemingly randomly like Rhino did). Rhino did like 2 or 3 of those polls and they never really seemed to look at the results. give us puma man and at least one season 7 episode! And as far as cover art, do you all really favor the Film Crew art over the Rhino MST art? I don't.

I hope they retain the box set releases. I don't want single episodes.

I hope this causes a price drop, but knowing my luck...
I fell guilty for not buying as many of the box sets as I could've. But hey, I'm a poor college grad!

I hope this causes a price drop, but knowing my luck... I fell guilty for not buying as many of the box sets as I could've. But hey, I'm a poor college grad! And I'm a poor college undergrad! I finally bought my first three MST collections (I previously had the Essentials set with Shorts vol 3). They were on sale at Deepdiscount. I really am a little scared now that the Rhino sets will be going out of print. I can't afford to buy them all now! But I really want some more of them, especially before they become really expensive on eBay (forget about it), and we don't know how long it would take for Shout! to re-release the same episodes again. ACK! What do I do?

Good news! Good riddence to Rhino! Udvankory finally lost! ;D Although Samurai makes a point and I should start buying collections. Question though, is how will Shout! get the rights to anything? I actually thought the best place of MST to go would have been Image (which has a lot of MST movies rights). ShoutFactory will license movie rights just like Rhino did, possibly taking over/buying the remainder of whatever deals Rhino currently has signed. As I've said already, my likelihood list will remain pretty much the same for the time being.

OK, while I've been a MSTie for over a decade now I'm somewhat new to these online MST communities. Why does everyone hate Rhino so much? For the most part, I loved Rhino. I'll always be grateful to them for releasing around 1/4 of the series...including many episodes that were "new" to me. As a matter of fact, I hadn't seen a single Comedy Central era episode until Rhino began releasing them on DVD. And for that? I'm thankful. I'm also pleased to hear that they're keeping their word on the "Giant Gila Monster" single-disc issue. Although, if it just comes as a loose disc a la CT, then I might have to hop aboard the Rhino Hate! Train. And as far as cover art, do you all really favor the Film Crew art over the Rhino MST art? I don't. Neither do I. I do like the Film Crew art (and love those transparent cases) but I'm hoping S!F's MST3K artwork will be a step up from both the Film Crew and Rhino's MST3K releases. Now that the initial shock has worn off, I'm starting to get excited. There's a lot of potential here.

I was thinking they may take the deals Rhino has, since they are getting out of the DVD business anyway. But Volume 10.2 JUST came out, and Volume 12 or 11 (can't remember which was last) isn't too old. How long do they keep some of the older ones?
I still think MST would have benefitted from Image more. I think part of the reason they went to Rhino in the 1990s was because they (at the time) had the rights to a slew of MST movies.

I'm glad MST is finally getting online. Even though I think Mallon's CT post was a fake, I wonder if this (and watching CT) is kinda a testing waters for a new online series.

No, I know that, but I was saying that if Rhino loses the rights to distribute the episodes, then for a short while, every episode is out of print. I think it going to depend on exactly announcements both Rhino and Shout make in the future. Considering that Rhino is a part of WEA, I'm guessing that their episodes are not going to go 'out of print' or 'deleted' in one fell swoop, considering the money that's been put into the Rhino releases. I'm guessing that the two companies will make some sort of arrangement, that Rhino episodes will be retained by Rhino, at least for a while, and Shout will start with the others. It's just a guess, of course, but I really don't think there will be a 'every episode is out of print and therefore trade-able' scenario.
