So having been a fan of the show for a while, and learning of Mystery Fandom Theater 3000, I've been thinking of a way to tribute/create a version (Perhaps Animated?) of the Show. My plan to explain the context, while following the established cannon:
A ware house, with a shadowed figure. He flicks on lights, and they turn on in sequence to reveal the S.O.L. , rebuilt. The figure enters the ship. Cut to the new mads (They could be anyone, just insane but funny scientists), Seeing the figure on a view screen, the mads sport a grin and pull the now dusty lever (the one in Joel era opening) The SOL launches, with figure inside. After it enters orbit, our hero (who can be any hapless guy) finds copies of Joel's Original designs for the bots. After a while, he builds everyone and asks them one simple question:
"What's going on?"
The bots begin to explain, but are cut of by the mads, who give him his first film. Before our hero makes sense of it all, movie sign. The show then can proceed like it always has.
If you can create a better reboot premise, please tell me.

No reboot at all.
Too much of that going on.
MST3k is over. Move on.
Spend your time coming up with something new and original.

If there ever was a reboot?
A new Forrester shoots up a new victim into space. The new guy (or gal) then finds all the bots boxed up in the satellite and they're none too happy about being kidnapped and shot back into space. They probably call Mike and Joel and plea for help, and I think it'd be a great gag that Mike's kinda glad they're gone as they've been cramping his style all these years and his life has substantially improved in the few days Tom and Crow have been gone.
But, yeah, cameos from the original cast, but mostly an emphasis on the new cast.

There has to be a backup S.O.L lying around somewhere. Even NASA built two Skylabs.

Pretty sure any reboot would have to get Mallon's approval, and I doubt that's going to happen any time soon.

Pretty sure any reboot would have to get Mallon's approval, and I doubt that's going to happen any time soon. They've thanked Jim in the credits of the new Turkey Days, and they couldn't use the bots without his ok. Plus, Joel has confirmed he's the creative guy on the reboot, not the business guy. There are other people working on the reboot, and one of them, by virtue of ownership has to be Jim.

I wouldn't mind them linking the reboot to the pre-existing canon, but I'd be prepared to make it a fresh start if they thought it was best.

I know how we like to daydream about a reboot, but all the main cast have aged a bit and long-since moved on to new riffing projects, and it'd be nearly impossible to get everybody back together, on top of the whole Mallon issue. There are, from all accounts, at least half a dozen major comedy troupes around the country doing movie riffing in the style of MST3K whose performers are all quite talented, I'm sure, and would likely provide a fine pool of talent for Joel to draw from if he can get a reboot going, but it wouldn't be the same for me without Murphy, Beaulieu, Hodgson, Nelson, Corbett, Pehl, Conniff, and Brantseg (no way in hell they could get Mallon to do Gypsy again).
Kinda reminds me of the recent Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary reunion shows this summer. The performances were top-drawer -- I nabbed some really sweet mp3's from the streaming board feeds -- and from all accounts, the scene was wonderful, the energy was joyful and positive, and the double rainbow over Santa Clara Stadium during the first show was a moment that we Deadheads will be talking about for years. Still, it just wasn't the same without Jerry. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the band's anniversary, and honor Jerry's memory, and Trey Anastasio from Phish did a heroic job of filling Jerry's huge shoes -- Trey can really shred it -- but... it just wasn't the same without Jerry.
Perhaps a 30th Anniversary Reunion mini-series with all the original Comedy Central and SciFi cast members, with shows evenly split between the Comedy Central and SciFi-era casts -- just a single "short" season, maybe ten or twelve episodes and that'd be it... kinda like what the surviving Grateful Dead members did this summer.
"I'm a-ridin' on that Cosmic Freight Train, feelin' bad..."

Why does the new MST3k have to be the same? Similar is good. As long as its funny.

Why does the new MST3k have to be the same? Similar is good. As long as its funny. I don't think it needs to be the same, but it's always fun to try to keep things 'in continuity.' Basically, it boils down to wondering if a show would be better as a Reboot or as a Next Generation thing. I think both approaches have merit. As a Next Generation thing, you could theoretically get cameos from the original characters even if they weren't involved. If it was a Reboot, you could HAVE the original characters, but not with the same actors (who could still theoretically show up in cameos, but they wouldn't be themselves.) Honestly, the point is having a flimsy story that can justify why these people are forced to keep watching the movies. The reason MST3K rates higher than other horror host shows for me is that you have people forced into watching the movie along with you. They're 'trapped', as it were, and aren't free to just fast forward to the next moment where a joke can be more convenient. To its credit, Rifftrax doesn't really 'go quiet' very often, but you don't get the visual to know it. So... I'd be fine with either. As long as we get the experiment side of things going.

Why does the new MST3k have to be the same? Similar is good. As long as its funny. At this point, similarity is the main appeal, as the show has been dormant for 16 years. Nostalgia is its primary selling point. i would support a reboot if it was conceptually and aesthetically indistinguishable from the original. And cannon is unimportant- this show addresses narrative fairly flippantly- any decisive changes are tongue-in-cheek, and somewhat insignificant.

I like continuity (even zany, cheesy continuity), but mostly so we can have cameos from the old cast for nostalgia and to tie things together. I can see having new bots along with the new casts, though. Except for cambot. And maybe Gypsy. She could be the link from the past to the new.

New mad scientists who worships Dr. Forrester and Frank kidnap a new person and tries to recreate the SOL but gets a bunch of things wrong. When the real Dr. Forrester comes around and complains they still keeps doing it their way. They keep the framework the same but don't try to recreate the old. The new crew keeps what they like and change what they don't like. MST3001.
