The Turkey Day bumpers from a few sets back were all over the map in terms of quality though. And the Oscar specials had more than their share of video dropouts. Something else is afoot.

Well, that's unfortunate.
Honestly, I dunno what the deal is regarding the quality of the KTMA masters, but from what it sounds like, Shout at least wants to try restoring the clips, they're just on a restricted time that it isn't going to happen.
Well, I'm not gonna bother pre-ordering the box set then because I already have my Best Brains DVD copy from mst3k.com and I'm satisfied with that. (Plus, it's just a compilation of songs from episodes which isn't anything that special to me).

Another thing I should mention - regarding any KTMA's that have it bad, I really hope KTMA's 4, 5 and 12 are out of the question, because the quality of the current fan copies for those 3 episodes are so awful that it's almost unwatchable.

BTW, while i hate to get on the "bashing Satellite News" bandwagon, I think it's a little disconcerting that they haven't mentioned Shout factory's change of plans yet. Imagine some poor schmuck that didn't get the memo cause they don't have Shout's newsletter, or don't read this message board... *hums to self* Lazy...lazy...lazy...

If you are about to order, they also explain it on the SF website. I'd say SF has done a very good (and early) job of letting people know for this change of bonus promo DVD.

Well I'm disappointed, but at least I'm in no hurry to preorder now. The new disc sounds good, but it doesn't sound as delicious as the KTMA disc. Nor does it really have the spice of previous Shout bonus discs.
I'll order after he holidays. I'm too much of a MSTie to NOT want the disc but I'm in no hurry.

I have to agree. Shout is great about planning and researching. They've had these videos for at least a year. They had to have had the plan in place to release the KTMA disc before they announced it. It seems very odd and unlike them that just about a week after announcing it they discover that quality isn't good enough. Also I realize there's been very few KTMA clips released to the public but everything that has been released has been in pristine quality. Who knows, maybe the popularity of the two lost KTMA episodes made Shout look around a little harder for the other KTMA episodes, and they found something but realized they wouldn't have enough time to work on it before XXXVIII came out and they didn't want to release a lesser-quality edition. I was thinking that if Shout is OK with releasing these episodes for free maybe they could create and sell a show with Joel, Josh, and Trace talking about each episode. With each episode purchased the original KTMA episode would be included as a free bonus. For what it's worth Joel hasn't posted his reactions update yet, which was promised to come this week. That may mean nothing - we've all seen what Joel's sense of time is like. Or maybe they are planning something.

Joel sent out his thoughts on these episodes.... and bit of a bomb claiming that there might be a lost episode nobody knew about.
He also cleared up that you can buy the VHX package with the KTMA episodes for $35 on the BringBackMST backerkit, if you didn't back the Kickstarter.

Not to spoil too much from the backer exclusive stuff, but I am happy to hear that they will be going 10 seats across for the theater segments. Since the show will be 16:9, the new season will basically match MST3K: The Movie in how the seats appear:

My gut tells me he's probably correct in assuming it was the same episode as Invaders from the Deep. It doesn't really make sense that they would throw away an episode of work just because it didn't have the theme song. I'm more intrigued by the bit saying they had a chance to reriff these two films but Joel vetoed it because he found them difficult to work with. I'm just an outsider, but I feel there is plenty to work with. Oh well though.

This made me happier than most things. Loved it. That said...KTMA eps. Heh heh.
Who was it that used to say on here that the KTMA episodes were the best and they went downhill from there? Some oldtimers should remember...
