Yeah, I think his second thought about having used clips from K01 in the opening meant that they would have already made them, and were now using them as a device to "explain" the show via the theme song. So, there isn't another missing episode per se, just a version of K01 without the theme/opening.
I always hated how so many sit-coms made an opening montage, using clips from the very first episode, but never going back to update it with new clips as the show progressed (sometimes years). Like they didn't want to spend one penny more than necessary.
Not sure if anyone has asked Joel directly, but on the subject of the theme song, I really hope they don't change it for the new show. Maybe a new recording/lyric change to explain the new characters, but otherwise keep it the same. No matter how dull the theme song is (not this show, but so many others) people are not willing to accept a change. Maybe they could get some bands to cover it for the closing credits. Man or Astro-Man is the only one I know of to play a version of it, I would love to hear some other interpretations, just not for the introduction.

Based on the comments Joel made regarding the pilot, I’m assuming that they did shoot longer theater segments (though not to the extent of showing all of The Green Slime) but those had to be trimmed down to fit the 15-minute runtime for the pitch. It may explain why Joel’s Star Wars riff that was in the first promo isn’t in the actual pilot.

Joel sent out his thoughts on these episodes.... and bit of a bomb claiming that there might be a lost episode nobody knew about. My gut tells me he's probably correct in assuming it was the same episode as Invaders from the Deep. It doesn't really make sense that they would throw away an episode of work just because it didn't have the theme song. Yeah, I think it was already assumed they filmed Invaders from the Deep before they filmed the intro, and that's why Joel mentions Beeper instead of Servo. But Joel also seems to think they might have re-did the first episode by using a different movie and the same skits. Also: Joel said there was no MST2K. I'm not sure if anyone seriously thought there was, but there you go.

I'm sure those who "thought" there was an MST2K were just misremembering, because so many other things (film, TV, music, consumer goods) had "2000" tacked onto their names. Then this show goes and bucks the trend.

Also: Joel said there was no MST2K. I'm not sure if anyone seriously thought there was, but there you go. As interesting as that update was, this is what I was really glad to see. It wasn't even that long ago that someone posted an argumentative thread stating they were positive there was an MST2K. I'm fairly sure Joel has even said something like this before, but it's nice to have it right there in a revival update. Also glad they are making K01 and K02 available for purchase through the backerkit. That way MSTies can obtain them through official means rather than pirating them somewhere.

I think they were trying to rile us up and failed miserably.

I do wonder if this new lost episode Joel mentioned might have been K01 but with a different opening segment similar to segment 2 of K00. I doubt they'd riff a different movie as that would just be a waste of time and money, things they didn't have much of back in the KTMA days.

Very cool notes from Joel on the KTMAs! One thing that stood out to me was:
I find that pretty interesting, I wonder what these forgotten ideas might be.

I remember that thread. the "people" supporting the Mst2k story all had the same stock gamera photo for an avatar and only had one post in their history which happened to be "no seriously guyz it was called mst2k no joke!"

Interesting tidbit that Joel dropped about there being a lost episode we never knew about and how Joel is unsure if it was a totally different movie used or just 'Invaders from the Deep' again.
But if it was a different movie, could it have been 'Thunderbirds to the Rescue'? I recall seeing a promo KTMA produced to announce the series and 'Thunderbirds to the Rescue' clips were used. The clips didn't have the theater seats at the bottom of the screen but then again the only MST3K clips used in it were from the 'The Green Slime' pitch pilot. Maybe that promo was produced before the recording of the first episode and KTMA wanted them to use the Thunderbirds movie first?

I mean, from looking at the promo, most of the footage contains clips of the pilot episode, so this was definitely made before the production of K01 I'm guessing. (I would have imagined they probably would have done it for K03, but decided to try something different).
