I'd go with Space Mutiny.
It's got a decent story with some classic riffs.
My first Mst3k was squirm, so that ain't a bad choice either.

My first was Track of the Moon Beast. It started slow, but I stuck with it and it just got better and better.

Space Mutiny.... decent story? ?? .... It's a story about a mutiny on a space ship. Interesting enough. It's just everything else about it that sucks.

Definitely The Movie. Right after The Professor dies.

After thinking about it a little more probably the best way is MST3K: The Movie. Then 3 episodes that really show what MST3K is.
Godzilla vs. Megalon (classic Japanese cheese so basically half of season 3 and other later Sci-Fi episodes) The Beginning of the End (Rhino release, a Mike episode, classic corny American sci-fi 50's release) Pod People (this shows that MST3K will riff anything and a classic episode).

I think that the voting on Riff Recognition tm is unanimous, then.

Yes, but what if one cannot procure MST3K:The Movie? It is, after all, woefully out of print. And only rock stars and merged conglomerates can afford it on the eBay trade.
Is there a different consensus favorite for first-timers?

Use Kazaa! As illegal as it is, there probably isn't any other way to get it at this point.

Speaking of which, is it illegal to share copyrighted material that is out of print? I've always wondered, since the copyright holder is no longer pursuing a profit.

It IS illegal, yes. You probably won't get caught for it, but it IS illegal.
The same thing goes for, say, abandonware sites that allow the free downloading of out of print video games, etc.

Is there a different consensus favorite for first-timers? I'm pretty sure the DVD is the only thing out of print. I'm pretty sure they're still selling the VHS. They've been showing it on the Starz channels lately. Check the listings when it's on next and tape it.
