Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and I have company coming over. In lieu of football, I thought we'd have our very own mini-Turkey Day Marathon. However, none of the company has ever seen MST before. So here's the question:
If you were introducing MST to someone else, which episode would you start with?

Ouch. Good question.
The trick with this is that it can't be an episode showing the best of the MST3K crew's work, because the best riffs often come from the most painful movies. I'd never show (for instance) Manos: Hands Of Fate or Red Zone Cuba to someone as a first episode.
Why don't you start with The Brain That Wouldn't Die? That's a pretty good episode, and the movie itself isn't entirely unenjoyable on its own. You might wanna follow it with a good Joel-era episode.
You might also wanna toss in a few sci-fi eps. Prince Of Space is funny, and Overdrawn At The Memory Bank is hilarious.

I introduced someone who had never even heard of MST3K to it with "Escape 2000". Well, actually, I first gave him a CD with some shorts that I had got off Kazaa and he thought they were funny but I think Escape 2000 has made him a mstie. "Mitchell" might be a good episode also, but it might be kind of confusing, what with it being Joel's last episode. You could also try "The Final Sacrifice".

Oh, the Final Sacrifice would definitely be a good way to go! Use that one!

It could also depend on what kind of movies your guests like. I favor B&W 50s sci fi so I'd go with something like that. Good question though, I might try to slip one in on Thanksgiving.

Now that I think about it Teenagers From Outer Space would be good.

I use to think Mitchell but on the first watch it is okay not hilarious, I guess I'm like Forrest you keep watching it, it gets more funny.
The best way is 'MST3K: The Movie' and then 'Pod People'. Don't show Manos or any other really, really bad movie until they have seen at least 3 episodes (not including the Movie) until that.
Probably the best episodes are: Pod People (easy to see as an ET ripoff, plus a classic and constant laughs) Godzilla vs. Megalon (never seen it but I saw a picture where Godzilla and his buddies are standing around Megalon and I was just laughing at it. Plus I heard it is a classic and Godzilla is recognizable) Neptune Men (I think it is classic, plus it introduces them to the hectic Sci-Fi era [with constant plot changes], great EP and they get my sig)

I actually had a MST3K 24-hour marathon a few weeks ago with some friends, some of whom had not seen the show at all. I suggest starting off with Cave Dwellers. Very strong riffing that is readily accessible for anyone to begin with. I consider it the shoehorn of MST3K episodes. At least it seemed to work at my little get-together.

Diabolik, for as good an episode as it is, is definitely NOT an episode that you should choose.

I'm thinking of starting with some shorts. Like the Gumby one or A Date With Your Family.
As for a full length episode, I'm thinking I might go with Time Chasers or Space Mutiny. Both movies are interesting enough to keep up with, even if you miss the riffs. (Notice I said "interesting", not "good").
So many choices.
Of course, it's hard to go wrong with The Day the Earth Froze or Jack Frost.

I'll vote for MST3K: the Movie. They even stated that they chose This Island Earth because of it's watchability in case anyone in the audience never heard of the show.

I introduced a friend to the show via Hobgoblins. His laughing was non-stop! He thought it just made it better because of the fact that the movie attempted humor on its own. I would definitely recommend that one for a first one.
Some more first-timers: - Jack Frost - Space Mutiny - Prince of Space - Cave Dwellers - MST3K: The Movie - Any season 7 ep

I'd say either the MST Movie or Village of the Giants.
Both are easy to follow movies and not dull.
