I started watching MST around '92, at about the same age or a little older than The Brains. Stick with me, there's a point. As of yesterday there were 125 board members and 43 listed their age. The average age is 25.3 years old. (MightyJack lists his age as 105, I didn't count it.) I am still surprised how many young fans the show still attracts but the simple fact is you kids just won't get all the references of the early shows. I mean no disrespect, it's not a matter of wit or intelligence, it's a matter of when you were alive. So when Forrest, Don, Ator, and MightyJack? review the Joel eps there may be things they miss. So as I rewatch these shows I'm going to going to pose a few questions and see if you guy's are clues in. To star off: 213- Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster. In the invention exchange, Joel's mind controlled guitar, Servo says "I have seen the future of rock & roll and his name is Joel Robinson". What is this in reference to? I suppose you could do a Google search and cheat but I am relying on the honor system. Please fellow old guy's,don't spoil it. Let the kids have a shot.

Two more from the same show. In regard to the background music. "Rhapsody I Blue? Did they sail into Manhattan?" In reference to what composer? When the sailboat encounters a storm. "I'm hysterical, and I'm wet." A line from what movie?

I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. At 27 I'm old enough (smart enough too, I guess) to get about 90% of the references they throw out. I get another 5% in context, but the rest go over my head.
For Instance: the first one I'm pretty sure on, the second I'm totally blanking on, and the third I know for sure.
But I would laugh at all three because they seem familiar to me, even if I don't know the exact reference.
Would I be considered an old guy?

Okay
The first is in reference to a quote about (I think) Bob Dylan. 50/50 on that.
The third is pretty much a verbatim line from The Producers, said by Gene Wilder.
How'd I do?

Number one, wrong. But a good guess. I'll let that one ride for now and see if someone else gets it. The Producers is right. I think that was kind of easy. This ep is full of dated riffs. They had references to the TV shows Get Smart, Hawaii Five-O, PInk Lady and Jeff and Thicke Of The Night. I think even someone as savy as Forrest would miss some of these.

I googled the first one, that would've been my second answer. Or third. I was thinking older....

You doubt that I'm One Hundered and Five years of age?! Why my honor has been besmirched!
Okay I'm not that old, but I do remember Pink Lady (and Jeff even) and even watched Thicke of the Night... Once (Oh the pain of that memory). I was there when "Killdozer" made its television debut. And fell in love with Marcia when the Brady Bunch premiered. So I'm old. Very, very... very old.
Therefore, I'll stay out of this (But kids, send me a dollar and I'll give you the answers!)
(edit for typos)

I have no clue what this is... I remember this, barely. I can't imagine why I would have watched it. The Chevy Chase show, now that left a scar. When I first heard the KillDozer references I had no idea what they were talking about. But it was a funny name so I laughed. I get it now but I still haven't seen it though. Marcia was just as hot in the reruns. (Actually, I've always been more of a Jan man, but let's not get into that).

I'm obviously older than the average here... the future of rock n roll was Bruuuce Coilysteen. The Boss, you see. I think Greil Marcus said that, didn't he? Or was it Time. Marcus in Time? They really should have said Johnny Rotten, they would've been righter...aw, well. Ooops. Some twentysomething was supposed to answer that, right? I'm old enough to remember Saturday night double creature features. Have seen most Msted movies unmsted...one of my earlies memories is seeing Giant Gila Monster...pity me...and Lost In Space (not in reruns folks)....enough What was Thick of the Night? Sounds familiar....

Um, I think that the Rhapsody In Blue one is a reference to composer George Gershwin. Right? The only composers coming to mind are George Gershwin and P. D. Q. Bach, and I know for a fact that it certainly isn't P. D. Q. Bach.
Regardless, I know the song Rhapsody In Blue. It's that one bluesy concert piece that starts with the long clarinet note.

Yes, I believe you are correct. Rhapsody in Blue is an awesome piece, and if you don't know what it sounds like, check out one of the United Airlines ads.

...and you are correct, phantomengineer, alot of the comments and references go straight over my head. But, as i've mentioned before, that's the beauty of the show. I'll be walking through the mall, or watching a movie with a friend, or reading a magazine, and suddenly, something will cause me to understand a joke from the show. I'll start laughing out loud for no reason, and people will stare at me. No other show can do something like this, especially on such a massive scale that mst3k does it.

It's the gift that keeps on giving. All answers are correct but I think the Bruce quote was Jon Landeau.
