I like the high-culture references that pop up. Like in season seven (I think it was Night Of The Blood Beast) when someone walks in with a lantern and they say something like, "Sorry, just looking for a righteous man!" That one always makes me burst into hysterics. Yes yes yes yes yes! The Diogenes reference! See, it's stuff like that which forever wedded me to the show.

Again, my love of film has fueled many a laugh. The "Oh if only Richard Widmark were here" said during Atomic Brain. I was in tears but I had to explain about "Kiss of Death" to a few friends who were going "What, what does that mean".
It makes me feel like a smarty pants (then, there are times when I have to have a riff explained to me, and I realise I'm just a mere mortal)

Well, I don't know *exactly* what that reference to Rod Steiger means, but I can tell you that Rod Steiger is one of those "marathon actors" whose had a career that spans well over fifty years. Is it a reference to one of the "gangster" movies that he was in? I know that he was in an Al Capone movie, and a few other gangster flicks.

Actually, it's not a fair question if you haven't seen the episode in a while.
Because the sign above the shop owner says "Pawnbroker", which is the name of one of Steigers films. I just always thought that was so smart, unless your into his movies (Or a film fanatic) it's not one that's easy to get.

I think the best way to describe it - and Kevin Murphy used exactly these terms in "This Is MST3K," the old CC-era documentary - is that when these references come flying out, references to things that only *I* among any of my friends, have ever culturally encountered, it begins to seem like they're inside of my head. And that's where the devotion to MST3K (which for me will be lifelong and duly passed down to the next generation) comes from - the sense that WE (them and me) are sharing an in-joke that the rest of the world doesn't get.
So the smarty-pants feeling is understandable. For me, it gets expressed as a feeling of conspiratorial bonhomie: a private joke I share with Best Brains and a couple thousand other hardcore fans spread throughout the world.
Sadly, my father is the only other person I know (in the flesh) who both really loves MST AND gets a lot of the references. Not as many as I do (oddly enough, he lived through the eras we're talking about, and didn't pay close enough attention!)

Yeah, it's hard to find people who can share this type of obsession. That's why things like the Conventio-Con-Expo-Fest-A-Rama's were so neat.

I'm the only person that I know of here in Northwest Florida that watches the show so fanatically. I love the feeling that no one else understands the jokes, so they call me "retarded" and "easily amused" instead.

You've gotta love the type of thing that the common non-MSTies say about this show....it's funny sometimes.

Only a few people I know are casual fans. My friend Kevin and I are big Mitchell fans but otherwise he doesn't watch any other ep.

It's weird how comedy affects different people. I can understand why your friend laughs at Mitchell though...Joe Don Baker is a joke within himself.

Didn't Matt Damien play Matthew Starr? I can remember what he looked like, but I'm not sure I got the name...

I started watching MST around '92, at about the same age or a little older than The Brains. Stick with me, there's a point. As of yesterday there were 125 board members and 43 listed their age. The average age is 25.3 years old. (MightyJack lists his age as 105, I didn't count it.) I am still surprised how many young fans the show still attracts but the simple fact is you kids just won't get all the references of the early shows. I mean no disrespect, it's not a matter of wit or intelligence, it's a matter of when you were alive. So when Forrest, Don, Ator, and MightyJack? review the Joel eps there may be things they miss. So as I rewatch these shows I'm going to going to pose a few questions and see if you guy's are clues in. To star off: 213- Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster. In the invention exchange, Joel's mind controlled guitar, Servo says "I have seen the future of rock & roll and his name is Joel Robinson". What is this in reference to? I suppose you could do a Google search and cheat but I am relying on the honor system. Please fellow old guy's,don't spoil it. Let the kids have a shot. Hmmm, this is an interst post. I have to admit that I don't COMPLETELY get alot of the jokes in the early episodes, but I do recognize what I mean. I don't know what Joel was talking about, but I have heard the phrase. BTW, in this early thing I was not included in the grouping of young guys I feel left out!

Oh I'm sorry. My mistake.

So I'll be 30 soon. But the thing is: the older I get, the funnier the show gets b/c I start to get more of the obscure references. I even get more of the weird pop culture references than you'd think since we're moving even further from that age. Go figure.
