I don't think MST3K will age in any negative ways. About 50% of the jokes in the show don't even reference pop culture, and that's what might make young people become fans. I am 18 and when I watch an ep. like Mitchell, I get a good chunk of the jokes because my tastes in pop culture are ecletic (sp?). Besides, I like the analyzing jokes and insults better.

I must say I'm 13 and I listen to Oldies and especially 80's music, watch all the classic and cheesey TV show's from the 50s-80s (but not the 60's, ehhh...), and I must say I get 85% of the references towards actors, music, and film.
In fact, I kind of have to get the riffs, as I'm doing my own fan production, and references are the funniest part of the show.
I guess I'm just an old soul. I'm talking old with a cane-old.

I'm a younger viewer, 18 and a half, but I still think that I get most of the references.
Then again, I was the only student in one of my classes who knew who the Marx Brothers were, so maybe I'm just a pop culture junkie....

Phantomengineer -
I gotta tell you, I'm 38 years old, and have been watching since 92 as well. I think Joel's my favorite, because he sounds like he grew up living down the street from me we share so many similar childhood memories.
BUT, I have to say, I couldn't get any of your first references - no clue. But my sister and I loved Pink Lady! Did they ever actually have a song that hit American charts?
So, I guess I'm saying I'm old, but I'm stupid...

I totally connect to Joel.

I am 18 and I get most of the jokes from the SFC era. I do enjoy the Joel era becuase he was so relaxed and the comedy was more on goofiness then sarcasm which I like here and then. I started watching when SFC picked up (of force becuase we didn't have CC until '98) the show and I totally connected to mike because their is this very sarcastic and droll to my personality that I developed from watching MST3K. Mike is Mr. Hyde and Joel is the Dr. Jekyll side of my personality, a balanced mix (unlike the tale).

I think Joel was a master at sarcasm. He was so subtle sometimes. He had that "sleepy" quality. I also feel Joel got more politically satirical- which I love.

I like Joel a lot and of course he made the biggest contribution but remember, Mike Nelson was the head writer for damn near the whole series and he was the one to approve material from everybody. So that sarcasm you are hearing from Joel and subtleness is some of Mike's doing. Like I was saying, Joel's relaxed quality and Mike's flat out drolled sarcasm are my personality, 50/50.

Well, Head Writer pretty much meant that he just approved and finalized everything. I suppose that it's possible that Mike is a bigger contribution to Joel's comic charm than we've normally thought as you're suggesting, though I'm not sure that even a head writer would have that kind of control over the delivery, etc.
I say this as one who normally prefers Mike, BTW. ;D

I think Joel's my favorite, because he sounds like he grew up living down the street from me we share so many similar childhood memories. This really struck me when I started watching. Joel is from the Midwest and I grew up on the West coast but I felt I had a lot in common with him. When he would tell the Bots about the 60's or about dangerous toys it sounded very familiar. Speaking of Joel shows, here's another question. In the 414- Tormented host segment where they are throwing pop stars off the lighthouse, Joel asks why Servo wants to throw Kenny Rogers off twice and Tom says " I'm really mad about six pack". What does that mean? Once again a Kenny Rogers search might answer it but please only answer if you know. I'm not proud that I know.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure it was some movie Kenny did with a bunch of kids. That was the 'six pack'. Haven't seen it though...

That's it. I didn't cap "Six Pack" so as to not give it away. I remember seeing the newspaper ad for the movie and thinking what a load of crap it looks like. I'd like to think I would have forgotten it existed if MST hadn't reenforced the memory.

You know, for as much as we love this show, you've gotta admit that it reminds us about things that we'd probably rather forget.
Like Coleman Francis. Or Hobgoblins. Or Sandy Frank....

Six Pack - a really crappy Kenny Rogers movie a la the 70's. And Thank you Phantomengineer for a question I can answer!
The Tormented ep also notes the many references to "Sessions Presents!" And that one totally cracked me up, because I had forgotten the "Sessions" albums of the 70's.
I also grew up on the West Coast PhantomE - So. Cal. But Joel and I obviously got many of the same toys for Christmas (Marvel the Mustang! He's almost for real!)

The Sessions running gag is hilarious. But someone in their teens or twenties might nit remember it. Which is the point of this thread. The questions I've asked aren’t necessarily hard, just things somebody under 25 or so might not be aware of. Sort of a public service. But I love the kids, as long as their somewhere else.
