It was surely a question of getting "easy to license" episodes. Hopefully strong sales will induce Rhino to work at getting something a little older and a little more exotic.
Bill Corbett and Mike Nelson did say that some future episodes were "clearing rights". I don't think they meant Boggy Creek, Time Chasers, etc.
Always the optimist, I think that we're getting even more this year.
Meantime, everyone please just buy the 5th set.

Yeah, none of these look like great "rights issue" challenges and at Satellite News, their source asked what episodes the fans wanted. So perhaps the next one's (a summer and X-Mas release would be GREAT Rhino) will branch out.
I do like that there's a bit more in the extra's. Interviews and longer intro's from Mike. It's a start, I'll take 'em.
And really, for me, there are 3 A grade eps and a B+ ep (Merlin) so that's the best grouping they've done out of all of them. So on a personal note, I'm happy with that.

I agree, the selection is quite decent. I've only seen the first few minutes of the Merlin episode. 3/9 can't come soon enough for me. ;D

Hmm. Well it looks like I was half right at least. The problem with predicting the future is that people always predict the future wrong because we overestimate some things and underestimate others. I like Merlin and Time Chasers, so that's not bad.
Actually, Time Chasers being included isn't a shocker at all. David Giancola is one of the few directors of MSTied movies who gets the joke and realizes that MST3K was a great opportunity for viewers to be exposed to mediocore films. Not only that, the sale of the broadcast rights for Time Chasers to the Sci-Fi Channel/MST3000 made his film finally break even. Giancola is probably allowing Rhino to include his film in the set with little or no fuss.
It looks like Rhino might try to take a slight bit of effort toward continuity by not mixing Comedy Central and SCI-FI era episodes. (They will most likely continue to label the disks in the wrong order though.) This makes me think that Volume 6 might include Comedy Central era episodes. Even if they skip Gunslinger and Shorts Vol. 3 again, they will have to go back to the older episodes soon if they are truly interested in releasing what fans want the most. (With the exception of 1013- Diabolik, all of the top ten episodes are from the Comedy Central era.)
I think it's interesting that Rhino had to be reminded about the two year old poll, since their supposed interest in what we wanted is the reason we all participated in the first place. When they finally do read over it, I hope they remember that all of the episodes showed up on the poll and not simply look at the top ten. Even 1010- It Lives By Night got 12 votes and I'm sure most fans would purchase that episode, just so they can complete their collection.
Share and Enjoy, FordPrefect

I doesn't really matter to me what they release, just the fact that they are being released at a decent rate now is enough for me. As long as they keep on selling, they'll keep on releasing em. I know that two of these had already been released by BBI but, they probably just wanted to go ahead and get them out there in the best format possible. This keeps people from complaining about not being able to get them and such. And you can probably bet that Gunslinger and Shorts 3 will be with the next set as well as probably two Joel eps. I've come to think that they're gonna get everything released already on some format out before they start releasing whole sets of new stuff. I'm just gonna take it as it comes.

Everyone thinks it's disappointing but think in the world of entertainment what other DVD box sets are probably coming out. The "Best" of Pauly Shore American Idol- Simon Cowell tries to be funny The "Best" of Reality TV The Best of 2003 Box Set (Gigli, From Justin To Kelly, Cat in the Hat, Honey) Now think of MST3K.

lol. Good point. I am happy with ANYTHING Rhino releases. However, I'd be happier if Rhino were to release Time of the Apes as opposed to and ep we've seen a million times on Sci-Fi. Saddly, Sandy Frank probably wont let Rhino release any of his films. Still, if they were to release The Final Sacrifice in a boxed set, even if ALien From LA, Hellcats and the worst KTMA ep were included, I'd still buy it. But perhaps Rhino should release a Winter set: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Santa Claus, The Day The Earth Froze, Jack Frost. The winter set is a good idea but they don't seem intrested in having themes or collections of continuity.

Who knows though, If Rhino is serious about what we want, "Santa Conquers the Martians" is the highest ranked ep that they haven't released. If not a winter set, perhaps at least a Santa ep included in a Nov set?
