Well here's my honest top 5. It's easy to see what era of the show I enjoyed the most. These are mosly episodes that I've watched 50 times or so on my old VHS copies that are in danger of wearing out. Hopefully I'll get them all on dvd someday. Anyway, here it is in no particular order.
Laserblast - The newest edition to my list. I simply can't get enough of those aliens. Were they the good guys? Oh well, it's not important. I can't believe that this movie gets 2 and a half stars on allmovie.com. I also enjoy the way it ends. It was the perfect just-in-case-we're-cancelled endings.
Space Mutiny - I have spent far too much of my life trying to decipher the plot of this silly movie. There was a very unmodest group of rebels on the ship. They had their own brige and own uniforms. The conducted their business over large monitors. They had a room full of frozen guys. In spite of all this, nobody ever noticed. The episode also has some of the most brilliant jokes from the whole series. They really got into the movie and characters.
Future War - I still think that season 10 was the best, and Future War is a good example of why. I don't know why this one doesn't come up more often. It was one of the perfect episodes for the show to do. There were tiny dinosaurs, ambigous fat guys, and oddly shaped cyborgs. The jokes are some of the most creative. They really have to push it to keep the boring movie form taking over. I love the end where Mike has the big chin. He did such a good job of losing it after movies. When I first saw this episode I did not stop laughing for about 20 minutes. My family was starting to worry about me. It's a shame that this one isn't really appreciated.
Track of the Moon Beast - Johnny Longbow is one of the best characters ever to grace the show. I loved their repition with his stew ingredients and their telling him to shut up through the voice of god. I also loved the transformation scene in which the main character morphes into himself before turning into the monster. It also has a great first host segment. This is another underappreciated later episode.
Squrim - Probably my favorate of them all. Spring Fever was great, and so was the host segment connected with it. The movie itself had a lot of personality that the writing staff picked up on perfectly. I see this movie on MoviePlex sometimes, and I am able to fill in most of the jokes myself. This one is really important to my life in general.
So there it is. No Joel episodes and only one before the Sci-Fi era. Perhaps I'm just too young.

Right now, I can only think of one movie I can put inthe top 5 (sigh, too much thinking) and it is #1: Future Wars! I don't know why. It just kills me. Only movie I almost died laughing from- you know, hehehe * eeeeugh!* haha * eeeeuugh* (cough cough) ahahahahahaha . Again! Oh, and Red Zone Cuba was really precious, throw that up there in #2 in honor of Fidel Castro's retirement. (Easy to pick the worst two, though: nose hair separates the badness Derby of Castle of Fu ManChu and Mightly Jack. I think Mighty Jack wins. What the fu*k was up with that guy and his cat?)

-trumpet noise-
1.) Hobgoblins - Something about this episode was very appealing to me. The movie knew it was bad.. it wasn't trying to pretend to be something it wasn't. And somehow that made the type of riffing very different. It was like Mike and the bots were scolding everyone in the movie just because they were pissed off. Plus the part where they stick cardboard cut-outs in the theater was brilliant. "Look at this guy" "I wouldn't do that .. Would you?" That's exactly how everyone who dislikes MST3k perceives the show to be.
2.) Overdrawn at the Memory Bank - This is on of those ultra cheesy movies that, for some reason, I have sympathy for. So I really have no trouble getting through the movie, so the riffing was really an added bonus, which was really quite well done especially the Casablanca riffs.. "You must remember this, My liver has been pierced." Casablanca also happens to be one of my favorite movies, and Peter Lorree is one of my favorite actors.
3.) Time of the Apes - The first episode I ever saw was "Teenagers from Outerspace." It was long, long ago. I don't remember any of the riffs. I didn't even understand the show.. I was just watching it because I liked black and white sci fi movies. Years later, the first SFC episode I saw was "Prince of Space." Again, I don't remember much, but I did get it and I laughed .. a lot. Years later, I had the internet.. and I remembered MST3k. I thought, "Man, I'd like to see that show again." So I searched for it in my p2p application.. and I clicked two random episodes to download. The first one to finish was Time of the Apes. I didn't remember Joel at all, even though he was in the first episode I saw.. but rediscovering this show as a more mature teenager was great for me. I remember laughing so much, and proclaiming that this was my favorite TV show. I watched the episode multiple times, until I was able to download more. This episode always brings back the memories of discovering what this show was really all about.
4.) Werewolf - Quite simply hilarious. When the actors manage to make themselves sound like idiots, an added riff is just the straw that breaks the camel's back with laughter. The scene where the guy honks, right after Mike says "Did he just honk?" is probably the loudest I've laughed at anything on the show. And I laugh at it everytime.
5.) Pod People - Pretty much the reason I love this one is the same reason everyone else loves it. It's just great.

There were tiny dinosaurs, ambigous fat guys, and oddly shaped cyborgs. That is the perfect description of Future War! A great ep!

Okay... Mitchel It's one of those episodes, where from beginning to end I'm constantly laughing. There's not a poorly designed riff or dull moment to be had. Gypsy is my favorite bot, and she gets lots of screen time in this one which makes it even better. Spacey Mutiny Like most people, I love how easy M&tb have it riffing the hell out of this one. The makers of Space Mutiny couldn't possibly have taken themselves seriously when filming this, and it all comes together so perfectly. Time Chasers It was actually pretty good on it's own. This is a MST movie I'd own independantly of the episode. Of course, good movie doesn't equal non-riffability. There are some well made movies that could be ripped to shreds with the likes of Manos. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank See above. Yeah, I said it. I liked this as a standalone. Nevermind that I had to watch the episode a dozen time before the plot (and there is a plot!) became completely obvious. And all the fat man riffs were beautiful. "The prime rib is GONE!" Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster Ok, I haven't actually seen this episode yet, but that doesn't really matter, because it's Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, and it's my favoritest movie of all time. I... kinda... have an... unhealthy love of Godzilla. I'm not making this up- I cried during Gino. Cried (a) because that is NOT Godzilla, and I died a little; and (b) at the end when Godzilla is staring at Nick right before he dies, I died a lot. The only thing they got right were his eyes. ... Anyway, this is the best movie I've ever seen (and the only MST movie I own) and no matter how bad the riffing actually is, or how poor the host segments (and I've read some pretty bad reviews) I will still approve.

1. The Beginging of the End - It was my "first" episode, and it's still one of my favorites. To me, this is the kind of movie MST3K was made for, black and white scifi moives that use some sort of nucelar radiation to turn harmless things like insects into man-eating monsters.
2. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank - For some reason, I actually *like* the movie. It's goofy fun, you know? So Mike and 'Bots riffing on it just makes it even funnier. The mock public broadcasting host segments help too, as I used to watch a lot of PBS and TPTV.
3. Teenagers from Outer Space - Lobsters used by thirty-year-old space teenagers almost kill us all, plus some partiuclary cheesy hostsegments.
4. Rocket Attack USA - The Cold War was the basis for some really schmaltzy films, and this one is no exception. Watch as the 'heroes' of the film fail at saving New York City!
5. Cosmic Princess - The film, or spliced together television show, is so rediculas that even in the KTMA era it shines. Or I just like it for some inexplicable reason.

5. Killer Shrews- The movie's about friggin gigantic mice running around! Whats there not to riff? Great episode, especially for the fact that the copy I got wasn't edited, like most others.
4. Merlin- Probably the most recent movie that was made fun of. The results are a plot-hole filled, cheapily made, badly scripted, Post-Apocalyptic nightmare, made fun by Mike and the bots!
3. Gamera- This is really Joel era riffing at it's best. Oh, and "It's Curly Joe!"
2. Prince of Space- The riffing is very good, and the movie by itself is actually pretty fun to watch!
1. Pod People- I've lived with monsters, I've cried with monsters, I'll die with monsters FROM HELL!

EDIT: Saw the "rules" below. I base mine on the movie, plus the host segments. 1. Night of the Bloodbeast ~ Incredibly fall-on-my-ass funny riffing, one of the best shorts, and a perfect movie for MST to use. Plus, you get two sets of host segments for the price of one. "Has anyone seen my hairbrush?" 2. The Incredible Melting Man ~ Another perfect movie for MST, that goes hand in hand with the riffs. 3. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians ~ Just a fun episode all around. "I wanna decide who lives and who dies". 4. Godzilla vs. Megalon ~ I'm a hardcore Godzilla fan, so this episode works two ways. Very funny riffing too. "Oh my god, the humidifier commited suicicde!" 5. The Giant Gila Monster ~ This or just about any other episode from the 4rth season. A classic episode. "Son? No wonder why my mom cries when I mention the Sheriff".

Not to pick on travis, but now's a good time to re-post the ground rules from the first post:
"Some ground rules for this thread: 1) Provide an explanation for each. Why? Because LIST THREADS ARE BORING!
2) If you can't choose just 5, then flip a coin. But let's not turn this into a "there's too many, I can't pick" whine-fest. We all know there are more than 5 great eps. Why 5? Because 10 is too many and 3 is too few.
3) It's understood that all lists are subject to change at any time."

I wonder how different the results would be if Village Of The Giants or Teenage Strangler had been released in 2003 instead of Pod People.

I wonder how different the results would be if Village Of The Giants or Teenage Strangler had been released in 2003 instead of Pod People. I don't think it would've made a huge difference. The episode would still be quality. If anything, awareness of it would be a little lower amongst the "newbs."

Okay, okay, I know I only gave two of my top five.... I'll give a third... I'd have to say Pod People. Just because Trumpy is so precious and because of the "winged potatoes" and "long eared potatoes" and that stupid Idiot Control song... ;D Two more? I guess I'll hafta think real hard, harder than my brain is used to thinking... chuck Devil Doll in there, because that's pretty darn sweet. Great wooden puppet of death with a psychotic ventrilloquest, how can you beat that? And... Time of the Apes. Because I like the scene where that irritating little monkey child 'Pepe' gets shot dozens and dozens of times... "Goodbye, friends!" POW PA PEW PEW BOOM ACK ACK ACK ACK ....

Thanks to info found at Tom's Temple I was able to figure out my first episode. It was the Amazing Colossal Man. I must not be very sentimental like the rest of you here, because not only couldn't I remember if it was this or another (as my first ep). BUT it's not in my top 5. I like it a lot, but heck, it's not even in my top 30! I'm a callous bastard!

1.) Pod People - Words cannot describe how happy this episode makes me. The host segments are perfect throughout, and while not every riff is 100%, the guys have such charm that you feel like they're you're buddys watching the movie right next to you.
2.) "Manos" The Hands of Fate - This movie made me a MST fan after I was reading about the movie online. This episode has the most laugh out loud riffs of any episode for me, which makes up for some average host segments.
3.) Hobgoblins - My favorite Mike episode. I think I like this episode a lot because I hate the movie a lot, and the guys rip it to shreds for me.
4.) Jack Frost - Other than maybe Santa Claus, the is arguably the strangest movie ever shown on MST. This is a movie that makes me laugh on its own, despite being technically an ok movie.
5.) The Final Sacrifice - Rowsdower. Zap Rowsdower.
