Apparently, during the Mindless Summer thing, they said the Gizmoplex is launching in "December or January, depending on how production goes and how disruptive COVID continues to be."
Which...seems like missing the optimal launch date of Turkey Day.

Maybe it was just the Gamera news? I mean, if they're making one episode that long, why bother to hack the rest down to 70 minutes? Because writing 83 minutes of jokes is hard! At least according to that one writer in that update. Won't somebody please think of those poor, overworked professional writers! Besides, they cram about 800+ jokes into 60-65 minutes of theater-time as it is, that's MORE than what they used to write back in the old days for ~75-80 minutes. And probably at twice the riff-per-minute rate. And as science has proven time and again, quantity is more important than quality. All right, now that I'm done being sarcastic... I just got a scary mental image of them riffng at 90 MPH, non-stop for 83 minutes over that Gamera movie. Under normal circumstances you would think that making the writers riff over a mostly unedited movie would make them change their own style of fast-paced non-stop riffs to reflect a more classic mode, simply because the act of saying AND hearing 83 minutes of double-barrel, breakneck jokes is exhausting... But we have to remember that: 1. There are multiple teams of writers. 2. The performers are not the writers. 3. Most likely the riffs will be edited in later, probably ad hoc in chunks, so any kind of natural speaking rhythm from the performers doesn't matter and jokes can be squeezed in via the editing. As far as my predictions...I have literally no idea. I'm hoping they take their time and finely craft each episode, one at a time, with the proper care they deserve and the end result is something rewatchable. But I'm not holding my breath.

Also, after all the talk of doing this new season ep by ep, the updates sure sound like they're doing it assembly line again -- finding all the movies, writing all the eps, next will be shooting all the eps (in batches by each cast set). The plan might be to release them one at a time, but they're still making them in the less organic, less fun NuMST3K way. Yes, I've noticed that as well. At this point it's an exercise in semantics as to what counts is making them "one at a time" vs "all at once". Because the process for Season 13 sounds like the process for Seasons 11 & 12, only in 3 pods by writing team and host crews. It's pretty clear they're writing all of the episodes months before they start shooting again like before, but I'm unsure if each of the 3 hosting crews are going to be shooting all of their respective host segments at once, or in 2 or 3 sessions. Because they're clearly scheduling these to be shot in-bulk again if they're writing the episodes all at once. I guess the question is if they're going to still be writing and/or shooting by the time the first episode premieres in November. Or if it's all going to be in the can by then. Because if it is effectively finished before the premiere, I'm not really sure I see any functional difference between what they're doing now and how they did things in Seasons 11 and 12.

Never cared much for Catalina Caper (it fits into the "it's okay" category) but the livestreamers seem to enjoy it. And these folks were more low-key, so it was an easier watch for me. Jonah, God bless him, but he kind of annoys me on these, he's loud and irksome, like some kid starving for attention. As for spoilers... I think I like knowing the movies, my need to know is stronger than my desire for surprise. So share Joel, share. (I wonder if that'll include a list of the shorts?) Now, the SHORTS...those were almost always a total surprise back in the old days.

The movies were almost never a complete surprise coming up.
Back in the Comedy Central days, going back to season 3, at least, they included in a episode guide in the Life Survival Kit you got when you were a fan club member, It generally included upcoming episodes with their movie titles including what they were planning for the next months. Notably for season 4 the list included the Elvis Presley movie Charro! as episode 417 months before they lost the rights and had to replace it. Same for the end of Season 6 where Master Ninja III was listed before they replaced it with Samson vs The Vampire Women.
They spoiled most of Season 7 in the ACEG months before the season premiered.
The list of the first few Sci-Fi episodes was "leaked" during the 2nd Convention when early screeners were seen in the writing room at BBI.
The writers themselves would even tell you what movies they were working on. Kevin Murphy in a Sci-Fi Dominion chat let leak they were watching Beyond The Burmuda Triangle for early Season 8, which later fell through.
Comedy Central and Sci-Fi would put out monthly schedules they'd give out if you asked them telling you what episodes were coming and when. And that all goes without talking about TV Guide a week or so beforehand.
The movies were almost never a total mystery. We may never have gotten a whole list in a neat package months before the episode premiered, granted, but its hardly groundbreaking stuff.

I guess I'd have to know how bad the extant prints they could find were, but I wish they were more comfortable choosing a movie that doesn't have a recent 4k Bluray release or something with a high quality release. It seems awfully limiting, especially for a movie that fit all of the other criteria.

Per Joel, they lost the rights to the 2nd selection for the Holiday episode, so they've now acquired a 3rd choice. They also couldn't find a good print of another episode and are on the 2nd choice for that one.

Oh, absolutely bring back the middle host segment.
I'm generally ok with culling the boring, if its redundant boring. If there's four identical 5-minute driving scenes, its ok to get rid of 1 or maybe 2 of them and trim down another to like 2.5 minutes.
But egregious trimming JUST for the sake of trimming is a huge no-no. The finale "loop" scene from Time Travelers should NOT have been cut. The 2-5 seconds between credits at the beginning of Starcrash...that edit was so distracting and unnecessary. The full McDonald's dance scene from Mac and Me for crying out loud! One of the most bizarre, famous scenes from that film SHOULD NOT have been cut down the way it was. That's the kind of editing I do not want them doing anymore.

I HOPE they go lighter on severely editing the films this time around.
Beyond the bog-standard removing objectionable stuff and boring long walking scenes (and maybe to get the episodes down to a length that can be syndicated)...they really don't NEED to edit these films to the little nubs they were in Season 12. The people subscribing know what they're getting, there's no general Netflix-sized audience to try and appease anymore. Just...let the movies breathe.

83 minutes is the longest "theater time" since 317-Viking Women vs The Sea Serpent, which was 85 minutes. Quite a few Season 1-3 episodes pushed north of 80 minutes in the theater (which frankly I preferred). SourceHeck,I preferred the 75-78 min avg of Season 4-10 to the 60-65ish minutes we've been getting.

I always assumed from the sound of it, when they described it, that the core components, the basic electrical, scaffolding and plumbing (ie, the video streaming tech), of the Gizmoplex is being bought from some third party company and they're just going to hang curtains on it to make it their own brand.
I don't think every single little feature Joel mentioned that he wants on there is going to be built out at launch probably, but the basic functions probably won't take much to get up and running.

I just received the new MST3K update and tonight begins "The Mindless Summer Series." (Begins August 6th, 2021). I am very disappointed in the selection of films for this weekly event until the last episode which will be September 3rd, 2021. Most of the films have already been done on MST3K. Here are the titles - "The Horror of Party Beach", "Tormented," "Blood Waters of Dr. Z," "Catalina Caper," and "Code Name" Diamondhead." I am not very happy at this selection except for the first film. I have also been concerned about where they are taking MST3K. I invested heavily in this project through Kickstarter and I feel that it's all going in the wrong direction. When they announced the Gizmoplex I thought it would be a facility in Minnesota where they would film all episodes with a museum for fans to visit, etc. Kind of similar to the Prince Compound "Paisley Place." It looks like that is not the case at all and maybe I let my imagination get the best of me, but that is what I read into it when the campaign to fund began. I am also concerned of all the money they are shelling out to hire people. I think it's unnecessary, and I feel like they are throwing money at people. Most of the people I see in the email updates I would not have hired, and I think they should keep it very simple like at KTMA. I think they need to get back to the basics of it all and allow the funds to go farther. I am also worried about all the writers they are hiring. I have seen the names and these are not funny people. I need to stop because I am ranting here, but I am concerned, and if they don't pull it together I won't be funding again. Is this satire? It has to be, right? Because it doesn't match your post history, where you said you pledged 85 bucks and even refer to the Gizmoplex as a digital place. I'm going with satire. I don't want to consider the alternative.
