Fun fact! Mel Welles play Digger Smolken in The Undead! That knowledge put me on a quest to learn more. Then I discovered that the actress who played Amathea (Lana Clarkson) is the woman Phil Spector murdered in 2003. Yikes. Now I just feel dirty. Sometimes NOT knowing is half the battle.

When my cousin and I see each other, sometimes we go through the whole: "Hello!" "Thank You! Hello!" "Thank You!" deal from one of the Gamera movies. This one. All the time with the Atari kids.

I'm 4 episodes in and have some conclusions. A few match the majority opinion:
1) Pre-recording riffs and mashing them together, only to pantomime the shadowrama later, is a MAJOR misstep. It absolutely affects the timing and changes the experience of the show. There were a few of the longer riffs in Time Travelers and Avalanche where you could tell the audio of the riff was sped up at the end and then abruptly cut off so as not to overlap the next line of movie dialogue.
2) The puppetry is three times more complicated this way, and three times less effective.
3) Talking over the theme song is dumb. Yet I miss the talking over the Robot Roll Call.
4) I like the new Gypsy and I don't mind the bridge set...or the static camerawork...or the invention exchange.
5) The movie choices have been A+ so far.
6) I like the quality and the tone of the riffing. The long jokes, not so much (like the tedious Interstellar riff in Time Travelers). But the overall riffing score is high for me.
7) I've enjoyed the cameos and the Mads, especially.

"If you're anything like me...and I know I am..." - Joel
"There's no tradition like a new tradition." - Crow from A Patrick Swayze Christmas
"Double-whammy ganga-ganga corn." - Crow as Orville Redenbacher. Spoken anytime there's corn on the dinner table.
"Diarrhea is like a storm raging inside of you."
"I got a mantis in my pantis."
And soooo many others.

First the bad: There's a feeling, understandably, that this is a show made by people who were fans of the original, and they're trying to reproduce what they remember and love. But it comes off like a tribute band. The idiosyncrasies that can't be copied aren't there. Like others have said, the pace seems wrong, and the timing of the riffs feels off. Plus, the analog nature of the original doesn't convert well to a digital look. It reminds me of how I felt watching Other Space. Like, I know this is funny, but it's not how funny TV is supposed to look or feel to me. There's not a looseness or an easygoing goofiness. Everything feels starchy and stiff in the visuals and the performances.
Now the good: For what it is, I very much enjoyed it. I laughed out loud several times at the riffs, and the movie itself was a hoot. The monster song was amazing, and I really liked the bumpers with the house band playing classic MST songs. Wil Wheaton and Erin Gray made me smile just by being there. I also liked the occasional fan-service riff like, "diarrhea is like a storm...", and that they stayed away from the low-hanging fruit of political, gay, or penis jokes that populate Trace & Frank's tour and newer Rifftrax stuff. Overall, I'm thrilled that the show is back, even in B- form.
Other random thoughts: I don't think flying Servo works in the theater, but the Pink Floyd's Animals riff made me laugh.
One area it felt far too scripted and not spontaneous was when all 3 riffers would sing a song-riff together. This happened way too many times in this episode.
In the bubble-fan host segment, Crow was in the middle of a joke when the crash edit went to Moon 13. I get the abruptness of the cut for humor's sake, but it seemed like a bad edit to me. Another area where the pacing seemed weird.
I liked the updated Gypsy. I don't know what she was dropping and picking up in the theater, but I enjoyed her changes.
Like MJ, I was confused by how similar their voices and personalities were. But I was very happy with how funny Baron and Hampton obviously are.
I'm going to watch these slowly, like maybe one a week (if I can hold out). That way, I can really get to know each episode instead of racing through them and letting my first impression become my lifelong opinion.

I thought this was a big problem with Cinematic Titanic. It just sounded too much like a script read instead of a spontaneous sounding interaction with the film. Hopefully this won't come across as wooden as CT did.

But it wasn't a list thread. It was a list thread with content. Totally different.
Okay, I admit it. It's a list thread. I'm a sellout. I just wanted to be cool. *sob*
It was a fun way to kill an afternoon. The author seemed to really like Bert I. Gordon and season 10, though. I was surprised that he ranked Puma Man #42, "thanks to a few slower sections," but kept Pod People in his top 10. I love Pod People, but it's by far the slowest of the famous and/or classic episodes.

Paste Magazine just posted a ranking and breakdown of all 177 episodes (not counting KTMAs). What do you think, sirs?

The problem with Rob & Laura cosplay is that we end up in separate beds.

Laura Petrie was my first crush. No joke.
This is a sad day.
Maybe I can get Mrs. Atari to put on the capri pants and flip wig later.

Lots to dislike about this season. The second episode was the best by far, but even that had tonal problems. The finale was entertaining, and I enjoy some good fanservice. But there were so many ridiculous plot developments and narrative short-cuts that once I started thinking about what I had just watched, I got confused and angry.
Remember when Sherlock was a detective who solved mysteries by being clever?

Also glad they are making K01 and K02 available for purchase through the backerkit. That way MSTies can obtain them through official means rather than pirating them somewhere. Does anyone have the actual link for this?
