Man, I'm lucky. I just ordered a new DVD of Beginning of the End from a major seller on ebay, and it was the last copy available. I think there was some bending of the rules going on, since the official title of the listed item is "Golden Amazon" or something, but the item is clearly MST3K Beginning of the End. Hey, I don't mind, I get what I want, they get to sell an item they've paid for already. *Whistles innocently* Of course, I should wait until I actually have the DVD in my hands before confirming my luck.

Guess they don't want to bash Bert I. Gordon.
Both movies were produced and directed by him.

Beginning of the End is owned by the Peter Rodgers Organization (according to the back of Image Entertainment's DVD of it). Perhaps they or Image had a problem with Rhino's release? Rhino did include the unMSTed version on the flip side (which was just a transfer from a video master, and not a film transfer like Image's).
I have the episode on VHS, and just managed to buy the DVD new off of ebay.. before it becomes scarce.

This is one of the major drawbacks to the four-episode box sets. If they lose the rights to one film in that set, then presumably they'd have to discontinue the entire set...

Have any of these people - Rhino - ever heard of lawyers? Maybe a lawyer could have something helpful to say about a contract that says "We're selling you the right to mass produce DVD's of this movie but we also reserve the right to suddenly pull said permission without warning, possibly leaving you stuck with thousands of discs you invested money in and now can't sell..." and helped them to avoid problems like this??? I mean, "Duh!"

Haven't we come to the conclusion that the folks at Rhino aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer?

Haven't we come to the conclusion that the folks at Rhino aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer? I thought we had only come to the conclusion that they didn't care about their customers... Now we know they don't even care about themselves and their own business....or are just too stupid to handle it.

Well, I've decided to stop buying Rhino anyway. . . . but sadness, all the same. I do hope I can get it from traders, however. And I saw part of the movie this summer, until my friend called me. 'Twas NICE.

So, is there a way to find out ahead of time which movies might lost their rights? It'd be nice to know in which order to buy the dvds... I only had four single dvd's left to buy, and Beginning of the End happened to be one of them...bummer.

Well hmmm . . .
I just won a buyitnow auction for Beginning of the End. The seller is mountmedia and the price was $11.33 with $7.29 shipping. I had been doing the following searches: "mystery beginning" and "mst3k beginning". I've been watching the recent auctions for BotE for about the last two weeks (and missed a couple darn good opportunities to get it reasonably cheap). Then this evening, oh, uh, morning (almost 2:00 now), I searched for "mst beginning" (no 3k) and a buyitnow popped up. So I jumped on it! But now . . .
A thing or two is worrying me.
After the auction I did a "completed items" search for "mst beginning" and it showed 15 other auctions going back to Jan 6th with the same parameters: buyitnow, $11.33, mountmedia, etcetera. I checked on the earliest one to see if that buyer had received their DVD and left feedback. It seems however that the buyer is still waiting. Now, I also notice that mountmedia's rating is at 98% mostly because of slow shipping and items not in stock. So, I really really hope that this seller just has some kind of big stock of BotE and just ships slowly! If I find out otherwise, I shall be quite PUT OUT!
