I don't know if "Bittersweet Symphony" is a one hit wonder. At least one song from "A Northern Soul" got quite a bit of play on college radio.
To me, one hit wonder means one hit and the disappeared...typically with no real albums to speak of. The Verve have a couple of very good records...

Sadly, they were a one-hit wonder in this country. Most Americans are probably more familiar with The Verve Pipe than The Verve. LOL i'm glad someone mentioned something @ them...i never considered them a one hit wonder...i guess it's because i've liked them for years and i despise Nike...i just ignore that whole thing. while that IS a phenomenal song...i really like their first 2 albums...i alctually got to see them...ohhh god..i think it was @ Lollapalooza 2...they played 2nd stage..great show! My fave song by them is probably "blue". simply for the time in my life when i heard it..... and there were some great songs mentioned on this little thread (prob why i needed to resurrecct and sexorcise my demons)... Wall of Voodoo--------Mexican Radio this song is stuck in myhead on a weekly basis. I LOVE IT. all i have is the Celtic Frost cover...which does nothing compared to original. some great 80's songs...the "i might like you better if we slept together".......the Waitresses song...i have this bizaaro love of all things new-wave/alt in the 80's...i can't believe no one has mentioned Spandau Ballet...and i'm a huge fan of 99 luft balloons!! the 7seconds version is great too!..the Motels..omg..i could go on and on... heh i just read that Sam likes Mexican Radio too....well how friggin fitting... ;) maybe we can wear Devo hats while kissing. how quaint...hahaha You touch on lot'sa good stuff here , & I know it wasn't meant as a continuation of "1-Hit Oneders" ( Devo ?!? , I think not ! .... Waitresses & Wall a' Voodoo also have many great songs ). But I must respond the a "facts geek' which I'm not and point while the "i might like you better if we slept together" really sounds like the band-machine that propels many a Waitresses track, it is indeed Romeo Void , and is called "Never Say Never" no less ! I'm all in the mood for some Waitresses now "Needed new posters, so I bought `em , I know the cost of stamps now" heh-heh

wow..i just read that for the....5th time...and now i understand what the hell you mean.. you thought i was saying that the waitresses did romeo Void song...sorry. i meant the waitresses song....in addition to the Void song. i was sooooooo friggin confused as to what you were saying...i don't use proper punctuation, so i accept full responsiblity here. to me everything is one giant run-on sentence. i expect everyone to understand that "........." means a pause between thoughts/ideas/blah blah. anyway... hope we're clear now. and i was just riding the 80's wave there for a minute....typing whatever flooded my mind...i guess i was alittle beyond the actual thread title. tee heee

I was reading this great thread a few weeks back. Then I was listening to my walk-man while waiting for the bus, radio-station-surfing, you know. I get to the local "Jack FM" station and I hear the beginnings of ... "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby. ("Wind Power" was another hit/video I remember from the 80s, BTW). I turned it up and did a little jig! Sure, it was synth, but what great synth! I always liked his music, and the coincidence of just posting on it was wierd.
The next song was that New Order hit! I was in 80s flashback heaven.
If you guys like 80s stuff, you should consider playing Grand Theft Auto. The game play is some of the best ever, and the bonus is the music. Try a soundtrack search for these 2 games. Vice City Vice City Stories Set in Miami in 1986 and 1984 respectively. The Stories game features missions that have you driving Phil Collins around, protecting him from would be killers, etc...
If you don't have a console, well...

Of course you know I was joking about JLH. I'd die if she were to just look at me. A used (or New) PS2 is a bargain now. Hundreds if not 1000s of available games. Gotta go.

It just took me about 3 passes to see what the hell I was try'na say. Outside of that , I totally relate to your admission of a unorthadox style , tho' in my case it's too much puncuation coupled with folksy slang like "I'm a' gonna' be bein' silly", for example. But I , like you , love me some > " . . . . " to create a stretched space. You know . . . insert some timing , vary the flow of my schpiel. We'll see if you start gettin' messages advising that "perhaps you'd be better understood if you posted like a human !" Why would I say that ? . . . have I ??

"Groove is in the Heart" by Dee-Lite. I don't know whether to punch that chick or kiss her. The sure sign of a great one-hit wonder. (*Not that I would advocate violence towards women, I'm just saying that you can only hear a catchy song so many times before it drives you nuckin' futs.)

I worked in a record store in the 70s. I have drunk enough alcohol since then to have wiped out most of the one hit wonders from my memory. Thank god.
I always did kind of like Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes.

Ooh, what a good topic!
I like a lot of one hit wonders. My favorite music is new wave, a genre which spawned a number of one hit wonders.
Heart And Soul-- T'Pau Safety Dance-- Men Without Hats Rock Me Amadeus-- Falco (bad song, I know, but I do like it) She Blinded Me With Science-- Thomas Dolby Cars-- Gary Numan She Drives Me Crazy-- Fine Young Cannibals Tainted Love-- Softcell The Politics Of Dancing-- Reflex (this is probably my favorite non-Cyndi Lauper new wave song of all time; not totally sure if the group was a one hit wonder though) Der Kommisar-- After The Fire It's My Life-- Talk Talk (not positive if this is a one hit wonder either) One Night In Bangkok-- Murray Head (one hit wonder?)
non-new wave: The Way-- Fastball Breakfast At Tiffany's-- ?? I forget What Is Love-- Haddaway
