I love "Obsession" by Animotion. One of my all-time favorite songs.

"Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum is a great one. ;D One of the half dozen songs "covered" by The Losers, Howard Stern's band. Sounded great, BTW. I don't know if anyone can find a link to it. "IgototheplaceIgototheplaceIgotothepla-ace"

My god, some of the best punk singles of all time were one-hit wonders. The Dead Boys' Sonic Reducer, X-Ray Spex' Oh Bondage! Up Yours!, Flipper's Sex Bomb, The Undertones' Teenage Kicks, Stiff Little Fingers' Suspect Device. All essentials.
The Nuggets series is chock full of great tracks too. One of my unsung favorites is The Wheels' Bad Little Woman. Check it out, it's a truly ferocious slice of proto-punk that must have blown away the 4 or 5 people who heard it back in 1966.

Here are a few of mine. I cheated a bit and looked a few of these up. The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia ~ Vicki Lawrence Hot Child in the City ~ Nick Gilder (Not really a favorite but I remember this as a riff in a MST3K movie. One of the man singing to himself riff's if I remember correctly) King Tut ~ Steve Martin Cruel to be Kind ~ Nick Lowe We're Not Gonna Take It ~ Twisted Sister Keep Your Hands to Yourself ~ Georgia Satellites Beds are Burning ~ Midnight Oil (didn't know that Midnight Oil was considered a one hit wonder band but it is listed as such) Dishonorable Mention She's Like the Wind ~ Patrick Swayze & Wendy Fraser (Had to say dishonorable because I really hate this song but hey it's Patrick Swayze

Dexy's Midnight Runners- Come On Eileen..this was a great band with a lot of potential...don't know why they never got past this song A-Ha-Take On Me Nerf Herder-Van Halen...gimmicky but I still loved it 10cc-I'm Not In Love...I don't know if they count but I love this song (I think this was their only "hit")their other stuff is not as good but they were a decent Queen sounding band Spandau Ballet- True...listening to Marvin all night long Human League-Don't You Want Me 4 Non-Blondes-What's Up...off a very solid album much like Dexy's Midnight Runners I don't know why they never got past this song A Flock Of Seagulls-I Ran...I think this was their only "hit" but they released 2 or 3 solid albums The Flaming Lips??? are they one hit wonders??? there are a lot of people who think that all they ever did was She Don't Use Jelly...I don't think around here but your average music fan seems to have this mindset Faith No More-Epic...so much more to this band than this song....Radiohead-Creep(which I think most people recognize as more than that "Creep" band but you still run into a few...) and Blind Melon-No Rain fall in this category as well
...anyway those are a few...

points of clarification:
Breakfast At Tiffany's was by a band called Deep Blue Something
and no way no how are New Order a one hit wonder besides Bizarre Love Triangle they had equal success with Blue Monday, Regret, True Faith, Round & Round(In US)...there might be more...like I don't know if Temptation was a hit here

Castleton Snob, The Flaming Lips, Human League, Radiohead, 10cc and Dexy's are all far from one-hit wonders over here as far as I know. Don't know how they've done in the States but all have had pretty decent success in the UK singles charts.
But Deep Blue Something were, because they were crap.

Don't know how they've done in the States but all have had pretty decent success in the UK singles charts. But Deep Blue Something were, because they were crap. yeah Deep Blue Something was very trite crap as far as Dexy's, Human League they were definitely one hit wonders over here not sure about 10cc because, for the most part, the only singles history I know about is from when I came in (early 80s)...and even then not so sure...I was a metalhead in my formative years and there are no true meTal bands that I can think of that were one hit wonders(Twisted Sister were "two hit wonders" but that's the closest I can think of)...that's just not how metal works. Consequently, I don't have much definite knowledge on this matter. as far as Radiohead and The Flaming Lips...over here the only singles success they have are Creep and She Don't Use Jelly as far as I know...it's true however that most everybody that knows these bands to any degree know they were much more than their "one hit"(in terms of US success) but since these are two of my favorite bands and I bring their names up to people when first discussing music, I can't tell you how many times the response I get is something to the effect of "You mean that band that did Creep/She Don't Use Jelly"(more with Radiohead since Jelly was only a minor hit in comparison)...when anyone who is a fan of either band will tell you that each respective band went on to do better things...so I think in most people eyes in the US these bands are "one hit wonders"...baffling isn't it?

A great example of that is the British band the Boo Radleys who had a number 1 over here with the one commercial sounding song they ever made, Wake Up Boo. It was released in the middle of the Britpop boom on Oasis' label Creation so it had hit written all over it. Although I was never a big fan, they made a ton of albums and were really well liked by critics, and yet Wake Up Boo is the only song anyone knows by them.
In the case of these bands the term "one hit wonder" is correct, but it's not really a negative thing because of the career they've had artistically. In the case of a Deep Blue Something it's very much the negative connotations that the phrase brings up.

Damn, someone already said "Tainted Love". I like the rest of the songs on the album but that's the only one most people know.
"Timothy" by The Buoys. A catchy song about being trapped in a mine and eating your friend.

Mary's Prayer by Danny Wilson, another example of a great band who only had one hit.

"Tainted Love" was done by a female soul singer named Gloria Jones in 1964 first. Both versions are very good. Some more one-hit-wonder favorites:
Nu Shooz "I Can't Wait" Bob & Earl "Harlem Shuffle". This was an early Barry White production, so something came out of it. George Baker Selection "Little Green Bag" Capitols "Cool Jerk". They had some really good late 60s singles, though. Don Julian & The (Meadow)Larks "The Jerk" or "Shorty The Pimp", depending on who you ask. They were very popular locally. Frankie Smith "Double Dutch Bus" (Those vocals make me want to stick something sharp in my ears, though) William DeVaughn "Be Thankful for What You Got"
Just remembered: The Beginning Of The End "Funky Nassau". The whole LP is back to back killer Florida/island soul calypso and funk. I wish it will get a proper reissue.
