Congratulations to Marcus Mariota for winning the Heisman Trophy. Everybody in Hawai'i is proud of all you've done. Not only the first Hawai'i born player to win the award but a graduate of St. Louis High School, my grandfathers Alma Mater. He and my grandma use to take all of us to watch the St. Louis Crusaders football games back in the 70s and 80s. Once my grandfather passed away I still followed and rooted for the Crusaders even though I was a Kailua Surfrider. My grandfather would have been proud to see Marcus win the Heisman. As for the lava, the flow has taken the north easterly slope and is flowing towards Pahoa Market, away from where I live. A short sigh of relief here, but now we watch to see what will happen next.

A few days ago on Facebook a friend of mine shared a blog post about my childhood hometown of Kailua. The person writing the blog states what it feels like for old time Kailua residents to see the changes to the town over the last ten or so years. Kailua thirty years ago was voted the friendliest town in America, and even though some of that still seems to exist there the Waikiki(ing) of Kailua is sad to see. What made Kailua beautiful is it wasn't like Honolulu or Waikiki. Now, it's just another of a long list of Hawai'i places being changed for the only income our state government seems to understand, tourism. Here's the link to the blog which expresses the lost most Kailuan's feel over their hometown called The Death of Small Kailua Town.Mahalo for reading and once again, Aloha. BTW, the image in the blog shows an area called Lanikai, Kailua town is actually to the left of the image, although the place where the President takes his vacations is straight ahead in the picture at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base.

You're welcome here anytime, Crowfan. Our hobos do need to be winnowed down. I've taken a few pictures recently that I've forgotten to share. One day a few weeks ago I walked down to the end of my street and snapped this shot: I'm not sure if it's noticeable but there's a bunch of downed trees near the center of the image. It's from Hurricane Iselle in August. And that overcast sky has lasted most of this month. We have a blizzard warning for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea at this moment. Last week Friday I went down near Pahoa Markerplace to the Longs Drugs store for what was their last day before closing: Pahoa Marketplace is to the left and behind me from where I was standing. I actually took what I thought were a couple of pictures of Pahoa Marketplace when driving by but when I arrived home I found out...low memory, no pictures were saved! I need to pay a bit more attention to the little message after shooting a picture. The lava flow has stalled so for the time being everyone is safe. And finally on this Christmas Eve: Yes, it's a baby on a TV screen. I have no idea what I was watching, but it worked out rather well. That's my tiny little village, small Christmas tree and computer wallpaper. Oh, boy! Anyway, Mahalo for reading and a Mele Kalikimaka! Aloha.

I'm shocked that some areas of Hawaii are getting snow. Pretty sure that could be a sign of the Apocalypse.

The fading sign of the apocalypse as of January, 7th 2015: Now the lava update. It's stopped flowing towards the Pahoa Marketplace and now has an active outbreak about a mile above the former flow front. It's moving north by northeast. Um, yea. Here again is the link that shows the wonderful direction that is. Oh, look, chicken's house is in that direction. How sweet...it's flowing down a drainage that leads it across the highway just over a mile from the Ainaloa Subdivision. I have a nice suggestion for the Pu'u O'o vent: "It's been thirty years, you can stop now. Or at least take a break for a few weeks so the flow has to start up from where you're slumbering away at lava flow things. We living here on the northern down slope of you would appreciate it very much. Yours truly. afriendlychicken."

Lava flavored chicken is really, really, really, really crispy.
The lava flow has been doing nothing, the lazy bum. The most active front is slightly west of Pahoa Marketplace about .4 miles from the highway.
And my computer hard disk committed a nice version of hara kari on Saturday. I tried mouth-to-steel resuscitation but it was no hope. All files lost. Flat line!!!! I never kept, or at least I backed-upped, personal things on my computer so that's nice, but I lost all my "programs-and-files-that-I-sometimes-use-and-download-when-I-get-some-of-that-movie-want-that-I'm-not-supposed-to-do" kind of stuff. Anyone know how I go about re-starting the whole process?
Well, at least this disk has more memory and it runs a lot faster. That's until I re-do all that "Programs-and-files-that-I..."

Here's an idea, send the lava to the Boston area so it can melt all that snow.
