This episode was excellent! Great way to start off a new season. Looks like the zombie budget has been increased.

One of the cool things they put into these shows is the character stuff. These people have apparently been foraging for anything they can use for months and now food is scarce, but Rick still won't stoop to seeing his son eat dog food (now he's paying attention to what Carl is doing).
I don't mind CGI head shots since the makeup is still very good. The Gas Mask walker whose face comes off was especially neat.
[spolier]One problem that happened was when they were beginning to search through the prison and marking the corridors with spraypaint, indicating that they had just checked that area and it was clear so they could follow the arrows back to the start. Then suddenly there are zombies behind them from where they had been. Unless the zombies can now teleport like in Fulci's City of the Living Dead or it's like a video game where when you're not looking or in a certain room at the time the zombies respawn there then it's just bad writing.[/spoiler]
Otherwise it's a solid opening for a new season.

The first episode was pretty good, but I thought last year's premiere was better. I'm eager to see where this leads.

I thought it was pretty darn good. I did like how they picked up the show after they had spent the winter foraging around for shelter and food. As was mentioned, the opening scene where Daryl is plucking the owl and Karl is going to eat dog food was excellent - I don't think a word was spoken through most of it, if at all. These people seem like they've spent a lot of time together. They don't need to speak. Glad to hear the ratings were decent. I'll be back next week for sure

Did anyone else notice the silencers they were using looked homemade? One looked like a re-purposed flashlight. I was just wondering if this was the case, and if it would be explained. Silencers aren't commercially available (right? like automatic weapons). They would prove invaluable when you need to keep quite while killing, so it would make sense that they might make their own.
Anyway, good episode. When are Carol and Daryl gonna bone already?

They managed to punctuate their dire situation after surviiving a tough winter in just a few minutes with very little said.

Good ep. Just one gripe: I think they would've run out of bullets and arrows LONG ago. Do they keep running into gun shops and hunting supply stores? And ones that haven't already been sacked?
And Herschel: OUucchhh!!

So far, I've been impressed with season 3. I liked season two, but thought that it often too little plot stretched over too much running time. They seem to have learned their lesson this time around.

Good episode. Sometimes it works really well when you get away from the normal circle of characters and take some time away from them. And we needed this – Andrea and Michonne needed some screen time, and we've apparently been waiting for this "governor" for some time.
He seems to be the epitome of the moral questions some of our main characters have been wrestling with for most of the show. Based on that last seen, though, I'd say he's much further corrupted than guys like Rick or even Shane was.
Oh, and one other thing. I know I may be whining a bit, but do we have to have "previously on Walking Dead" clips right before the show starts that completely give away interesting plot points? The flashback to Merle coupled with the credit Michael Rooker got in the opening credits completely blew the surprise that his character was going to be back. Now, granted, it could have been another flashback/hallucination kind of thing, but still. Daryl versus Merle? Oooh.

Now, if you cut off the Walkers' jaws, ala Michone's pets, and that makes them lose their interest in biting, what was getting them so riled up that Michone had to kill them?

Well, I guess more stuff for T-Dog to do is out of the question. Wow. What an emotional episode. After months of having to be strong, Rick finally broke down.
