Before you heard of or saw MST3K, did any of you riff on movies or shows?
I remember the old "Friday the 13th" TV show, my Bro and I got our girlfriends laughing from our comments. The only riff I remember doing was during a scene in Chinatown and one (Chinese) guy owes this Yakuza some cash. The gangster says... "Your a little short!" My line: "But we're all a little short!" (I know, not PC at all)
And a Twilight Zone episode. These kids dive into a pool and when they surface, they are in this "neverland" kind of place, headed by an old lady called "T". Course whenever she was on screen we'd do the "I pity the fool!" line. At one point she actually pulls out boxing gloves and I recall saying, "Now I'm going to kick Rocky's ass" in an old lady voice.
Probably reads real dumb, but we had fun my brother and I.
So do any of you remember riffing on flicks. And when you finally saw MST, was it like you found a kindred spirit?
DISCLAIMER: Never riff in a theater full of people, that's rude and inconsiterate!

I was definitely a riffing before I saw MST. Me and my best friend in grade school and Junior high always made it a point to watch infomercials and riff the hell out of them. Sometimes soap operas too. We had a ball. I didn't know anyone else did it till I saw MST.

I was a riffer, and so was my father. My mom and sister still to this day threaten to move to another row if the two of us start riffing on movies.
And I'm sad to say that we do it at a theater, but really quietly so that only the four of us can hear it.

Well, okay but only if your real quiet. Unless it's a Rob Schneider film, then riff as loud as you want because God knows the poor schlubs who forked out $8 to $10, deserve a laugh for their hard earned money!

I always made fun of bad movies but MST raised the bar.

I have always riffed EVERYTHING -- movies, TV shows, commercials, you name it. That's probably why I had such an instant bond with MST. It's in my genes -- my grandmother, my dad and my three siblings are all insufferable smart asses.

Kinda. I tried riffing dreamcatcher, the film from the Stephen King book, but it was way too horrible.

It's just in my blood, sometimes I do it out of habit, even with a movie I love.
The wife and I were watching Spider Man on DVD and I threw out a "Hey, Eddie George!" when Peters teacher showed up on screen near the start of the film (During the field trip). It's not like I was mocking the movie, riffs simply pop out at times.
(and Eddie had a hell of a game Saturday so I was inspired! Go Titans!! Sorry, I'm still a wee bit jacked)

Yeah,I have that previously mentioned smart-ass gene, where me and my family will make fun of things on TV and such.I often make observational comments and ask questions while my sister watches certain TV shows that I don't like, but can find un-intentional comediac things in it.

I do that with just about everything, too. I did it on about two lifetime movies and did a couple of riffs on 'The Shining'. I'd have to say, the best one was when Scatman Crothers character asked if he could get Danny (Danny Lloyd) some ice cream and I said, as the parents, "Sure, as long as you don't rape him!" After saying that, my friend commented that I had a sick head.

When I was 14 in 1984, I spent New Year's Eve at a friend's house trashing "Metal Storm -- The Destruction of Jared El Syn," or whatever its real name is. It was a terrible movie, but we all had a great time doing it.

Yes, MST3k made me obsessed with it. i.e., when I was in 6th grade there was this horrible musical educational movies about rocks. It still hurts. Owch... "First those little sediments drift down... the stream. Da na na na naaaaaa! And I wanna sing some more but my heart just really is'nt in it..." "I-g-n-e-o-u-s! Igneous... Rockssssssss!" "I once knew a rock know as granite... till heat and pressure turnrd it into a treasure. Well... granite was an igneous rock till it went through a shock, now it's a nice little tiny little metamorphic rock!" Owwwwwwwwwwch!

Definitely a riffer before. Which is what attracted me to the show to begin with. Wow, here were other guys riffing a bad movie in a way I'd never dreamed of! But it doesn't matter, good movies can become fodder too. Even real life situations, though I try to curb the acid tongue in those situations. My dad and my husband are both good instigators. Once you have someone else to riff with the possibilities are endless.
